Games thread- Women's Basketball visits WSU (Friday, 9:00 PM MT) and Washington (Sunday, 3:00 PM MT)

3 point lead with Buffs taking a timeout to advance the ball beyond half court, 8 seconds left.

Buffs hold on 66-61. Clutch free throws down the stretch (5-6) to hold off UDub.

Important win in terms of keeping hopes alive for the WNIT.

Appeared Buffs changed defense at the timeout in the 2nd quarter. Defense was much better after that timeout. Lex played inspired basketball today. Jank didn't get many points but she was rebounding. Kennedy runs the point so well. Team made free throws, still need to shoot better from the field and cut down on turnovers.

Buffs had trouble with #4 for Washington's offense all game long. Need to learn how to stop high scorers on opponents' teams.

11-4 (2-2) is not bad position. Homestand against the LA schools is big coming up.

The thing I just don't get with this team is the turnover problem.

Isn't the strength supposed to be the backcourt and wings?

SEATTLE – Colorado rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to earn a 66-61 win at Washington on Sunday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Buffs improved to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-12, while the Huskies dropped to 6-9 and 0-4.

The win snapped a nine-game losing streak against Washington.

STAT LEADERS: Alexis Robinson tied a career high with 22 points, shooting 9-of-15 from the floor and hitting three 3-point field goals, while grabbing seven rebounds to lead CU. Janea Bunn scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Kennedy Leonard had 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. She made 6-of-7 free throws to help seal the win late.

Seattle native Quinessa Caylao-Do dished out a team-high five assists and had seven points. Freshman Annika Jank was limited to four points, but pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Washington's Amber Melgoza led all scorers with 28 points, sinking 10-of-18 field goals, including 4-of-6 from the outside. Hannah Johnson had 10 points for the Huskies and tied Robinson for a game-high nine rebounds.
...

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado shot 42.7 percent (25-for-59) in the game, while holding UW to 39.7 percent (23-for-58). The Buffs also outrebounded UW 38-31 to aid in the victory, despite committing 20 turnovers.

NOTES: The win for CU snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Huskies as it was the first win over Washington since March 8, 2013, and the first win at Alaska Airlines Arena since 2004 ... CU improves to 2-2 this season when trailing at halftime ... Robinson's 22 points tied a career high (vs. Air Force, 11/13/16) ... CU's run from halftime to the 7:47 mark of the fourth quarter stretched to 28-9 as the Buffs led by 11 points at that point ... it was the second time this season CU has won after trailing by double-digit points (season opener vs. Samford trailed by 17).

UP NEXT: CU will return home to host Southern California at 6 p.m. on Friday.

The thing I just don't get with this team is the turnover problem.

Isn't the strength supposed to be the backcourt and wings?

KL had 7 turnovers and Bunn had 5. Robinson and Bunn had great games. Kennedy was fine after the first qtr. I think the strength is clearly the backcourt and the starting Center. I've said our backcourt needs 30 shots a game. They had 26 today. This was another must win and they came thru.

Watched part of the 3rd and all of the 4th quarters. The Buffs were in a trapping zone much of the time which slowed down the Huskies and gave the Buffs a decent cushion. But in the 4th quarter UDub's Amber Melgoza was having her way on the offensive end, a bit like Wazzu's Borislava Hristova did on Friday night. CU's inability to understand how to defend her almost cost them the game. Still, have to hand it to the Buffs for coming back away from home.

Also, Jenea Bunn didn't get into early foul trouble for once and ended up scoring 17 points. She's generally too quick for opponents on the interior.

Robinson with a number of timely treys.

If Janea Bunn can stay on the court (ie stay out of early foul trouble) like she did yesterday, she could be the frontcourt weapon that CU WBB has not had in years. She has a decent shot and seems to almost relish the contact that comes with playing in the post And in the past few games she seems to have improved her free throw shooting. That's one area she needs to continue to improve since she will be getting to the free throw line.

USC is a huge game. It's at home. They have a new HC. It seems they play a small line up and don't play many players. Bunn needs to stay out of foul trouble and dominate inside. Starting 3-3 would be huge. Ucla is Sunday and not even a homer like me thinks that's a possible win. It's possible to split the first 6 weekends if we improve. After USC/Ucla, we go to AZ then back home vs OR teams then UT series.

UCLA is like the UA game was this weekend for the Men's team. Bad matchup and not a game you think has much hope. But if you're going to have to play that team you couldn't ask for a better situation than them being in our building at the end of a MTZ altitude road trip.

Another split is a must for the Buffs and very possible with obviously Friday night v USC being the key.

Janea Bunn is the X factor for the Buffs right now. She is just starting to realize her potential and as we all know, part of that is not getting in early foul trouble. Her athleticism on the interior is very hard to defend. The was one play in the third v UDub where she was under the basket and double teamed and still manged to score on e layup.

Good point from Buffnik about UCLA having to come here after playing Utah on Friday night.

Never say never when it comes to upsets. Realistically, the best that will happen is we get a split. Time will tell. Need to keep all players healthy as the season goes on. I don't know if we will see Correal or not. Her size would help Janea get some rest.
