After a nice 2 game sweep at home last week, women's basketball (12-4 overall; 3-2 in Big 12 play) is back on the road. 1st up is their 1st time facing a team twice this season as they head to Morgantown to face the #20 West Virginia (WVU) Mountaineers (13-3, 3-2), who CU upset in Boulder with a BIG 4th quarter in their 1st Big 12 game back on 12/21/24 when WVU was ranked #14. Then, it's off to Ohio for CU's only scheduled game this season with the Cincinnati Bearcats (10-5, 2-3). (Was curious, so QUICKLY went through the schedule and, in addition to WVU, I'm seeing Baylor and Texas Tech as the other 2 conference schools the Buffs will be facing twice during the regular season this year.)

In the latest NET rankings (as of games played 1/22 ; available at https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), CU up to #67, while WVU is at #13 and Cincinnati #60.

As I assume will be the case for most if not all games hosted by a Big 12 school, both games are scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+ for those with a subscription to that paid subscription service. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Colorado Heads to No. 20 WVU: Five Things to Know

The Buffs are off to Morgantown to open a two-game road trip

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

MORGANTOWN, W.V. –
The Colorado women's basketball team heads back on the road this week, following its two-game home sweep of UCF and Kansas. The Buffaloes will take on No. 20 West Virginia for the second time this season on Wednesday (5 p.m. MT/ESPN+)

Five Things to Know
  1. Lead After 10 – The Buffs have led after the first quarter in 12 games this season. CU is 9-3 this season when leading after the first 10 minutes. CU has outscored its opponents by 61 points in the first quarter (305-244). The Buffs scored 31 points in the first quarter, their best first-quarter output of the season against UCF. It was tied for the most points scored in a quarter this season and the most in a first quarter since 32 against Denver (Dec. 12, 2019). The Buffs have scored 30 points or more twice in the first quarter this season.
  2. Solid Jade – Jade Masogayo leads the Buffs with 12 double-figure scoring games this season. She has now recorded 11+ double-figure games in all three of her collegiate seasons, totaling 11 in both her freshman and sophomore years at Missouri State. The junior is averaging a career-high 12.6 ppg this season and 16.2 ppg in Big 12 play.
  3. 80 Something – CU has twice shot 81.8% in a quarter this season. The Buffs were 9-for-11 in the third quarter against Kansas and in the fourth quarter against WVU. It's the best shooting quarter of the season and since 90.0% (9-10) at USC on Feb. 23, 2024.
  4. On Fire – Colorado has shot .500 or better in seven of the last nine games, including back-to-back Big 12 games against UCF and Kansas. CU is 41-3 all-time under JR Payne when shooting .500 or better. CU shot 50% or better 12 times last season. The Buffs shot at least .500 FG% in consecutive conference games 2x last season.
  5. Windex – CU has outrebounded opponents in 15 games this season (12-3). Colorado is 4th Big 12 with a +9.0 rebounding margin. The Buffs outrebounded Kansas by +21 (39-18). It was its largest rebounding margin since +21 vs Drake last season in the NCAA Tournament (Drake's 18 rebounds marked the fewest in by an opponent in program history). Sara-Rose Smith outrebounded Kansas on her own 19-18. Her 19 rebounds tied for the 4th most in program history.

Quotable
"I think it's huge. When you can get extra possessions like that, it does really add up. It wasn't just me as well. I sort of turned over and said to someone on the bench, like, we have a lot of O-Boards [offensive rebounds]. AJ [Ayianna Johnson] came in and got some. Grace [Oliver], she's got a good feel for it as well. So, I think it just really adds up." – Sara-Rose Smith on CU's ability to rebound.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Up Next: Jan. 18, at Cincinnati (ESPN+/4 p.m. MT).
"

WVU got payback on the Buffs in Morgantown by a 46-73 score. Didn't get to watch, but per the stats a somewhat tough shooting night and, mainly, a horrific 30 turnovers (leading to 39 Mountaineer points) look to have been CU's undoing.

Definitely one to quickly learn from and shake off, and get ready for Cincinnati.

The Buffs played absolutely terrible. Scored 2 points in the 2nd quarter and turnover after turnover after turnover. Couldn't shoot, couldn't play defense.

Nothing positive about how they played.

Game day!

Getting to Know the Buffs: Jade Masogayo

Getting to know the new players throughout the season

By: Macy Mohlenkamp, Athletic Communications Student Assistant

CINCINNATI –
The Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team remains on the road this weekend, closing the week with a visit to Cincinnati.

The Buffs have 10 new faces on the team this season, and CUBuffs.com will feature 'Get to Know' spotlights on all 10 players throughout the season.

Next up is junior Jade Masogayo.

What was it like growing up in Texas?

It was pretty cool. The atmosphere has really big energy. Everybody loves basketball down there in Texas, so a lot of people come to your games. It's a really cool life.

How did you get into basketball?
Honestly, I didn't start playing basketball for real until seventh or eighth grade. My parents were like let's put this height to good use. So, they enrolled me in some little, little league in middle school. I started out there, and then I just kind of stuck with it, and I didn't really take it seriously until my sophomore year.

What was it like to win the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year award?
It was pretty cool, actually, and honestly, unexpected. I didn't see it coming, but I worked hard. My coach believed in me. It was really cool.

Why did you choose to come to CU?
Hands down the coaching staff. Just coming here, you could automatically tell from the first conversation that they were extremely genuine people that I want to be around every single day, coaching me and uplifting me on and off the court. They do that. So, it's just a really good atmosphere, a good group of people to be around.

What's one of your favorite memories so far with the team?
I would probably say, at the beginning of the year, we did this little team bonding thing, and we did this little hike. And it was kind of funny because Kindyll [Wetta] and all of them are hikers; they'll be outside and all that. They're in the front of the group, but JoJo [Nworie], AJ [Johnson] and I were all in the back. We were all tired and just sweaty. But it was, it was fun to be around them.

What's the best thing you've learned from your coaches or teammates since coming to CU?
The best thing that I've learned is they just really pour into me and just to always believe in myself. They just really believe in me, and say that I'm always capable and stuff like that.

What do you like to do outside of basketball?
Outside of basketball, I love to eat. I'm trying to look for some spots around here and in Denver, too. I try and go fishing every now and then. I've been with Tabitha [Betson] once, so I'm trying to get that going.

Masogayo and the Buffs will be back in action on Saturday against Cincinnati (4 p.m. MT/ESPN+).

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

Up Next: Jan. 25, Kansas State (ESPN+/1 p.m. MT).

bad loss. IMO not athletic enough, no inside game to be honest and if Forman and Lior are not hitting, bad offense. Should have won that game. Refs were bad both ways. There were many rec league calls in that game. CU really misses Sherrod.

This team is not a good basketball team. The is not good. Frida and Wetta are great players with the right people around them. They no longer have the right people around them.

I really dislike NIL and the transfer portal.
