Women's basketball (12-6 overall; 3-4 in Big 12 play) has a home and away couple of games coming up. 1st off is a fun challenge against 1 of the top 2*** Big 12 teams so far this season, the #8 (media poll) / #10 (Coaches poll) Kansas State (KSU) Wildcats (19-1, 7-0), in Boulder this Saturday afternoon. Then, it's a relatively short road trip to Provo to face off Wednesday evening with the BYU Cougars (10-8, 1-6).
(***In the 2 current main polls, KSU is one spot ahead of TCU in 1 poll and 1 spot behind them in the other in the battle to be the top ranked Big 12 team.)

In the latest NET rankings (as of games played 1/22; available at https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-basketball-net-rankings), CU is now at #71, while KSU is at #7 and BYU #84.

As has been the case for all conference games so far this season, both games are scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+ for those with a subscription to that paid subscription service. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Going to be tough after the losses. I hope during this time they have worked on finishing games. What has been happening in the 4th quarter is costing games and will continue to do so.

Watched a injury plagued Maryland team run out of gas because of few bench players last night. They did run out of gas and lost to Ohio State.

A leader at PG who wills the team to victory is essential if you're going to have a great season. We were so spoiled by Jaylyn (and KJ on the men's side).

WBB 50th Season Highlights: Kansas State

Colorado defeats No. 12 Kansas State in Boulder

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
The 2024-25 season marks Colorado's return to the Big 12 Conference and a renewal of traditional and historic rivalries.

As part of the celebration of Colorado women's basketball's 50th anniversary season, CUBuffs.com will look back at historic matchups.

The Game: Colorado vs Kansas State, Feb. 23, 2002

The No. 11 Buffaloes were set for a rematch against No. 12 Kansas State, having lost in a closely contested 75-72 result earlier in the season in Manhattan. The second matchup came on Colorado's Senior Day in front of one of the largest home crowds in the last four years.

BOULDER – In Colorado's final home game of the regular season Saturday night, CU honored the 11th-ranked Buffs' senior class in pregame and postgame ceremonies.

But the seniors honored themselves with a critical 79-58 thumping of No. 12 Kansas State in front of a season-high 8,282—the largest home crowd to ever watch a game played by this senior class.

"It was our senior night and there was no way we were going to lose that game," senior Mandy Nightingale said. "You get a crowd like that and we're going to play our best."
...

Barry, who earned her 11th 20-win season in 19 years (15th overall at CU), hopes wins like this will help her team's chances of hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

It didn't hurt that it was senior night.

"I think that's a big emotional lift," Barry said. "We saw it (Feb. 20) at Baylor – we've been there and our seniors have been on other people's court for senior night. There was so much we were playing for, plus we have five seniors."

Colorado (12-6, 3-4 Big 12) looks to have similar success against No. 10 Kansas State (19-1, 7-0 Big 12) on Saturday (Jan. 25, 1 p.m. MT) at the CU Events Center.

Saturday will be the 70th meeting between the two programs. The Wildcats have a one-game advantage in the series, leading 35-34. The Buffs took the most recent meeting, a second-round NCAA Tournament victory (63-50) last season in Manhattan.

CU is 16-13 overall against KSU in Boulder.

A leader at PG who wills the team to victory is essential if you're going to have a great season. We were so spoiled by Jaylyn (and KJ on the men's side).

Absolutely. Jaylyn had the ability to rise to the occasion and take the team with her. Wetta does not have that talent.

CU WBB has had some incredible point guards over the years. There have been some who were adequate but did not posses that ability to take the team to it's highest level.

Watching Iowa struggle this season has been interesting. Coach Bluder retired. She knew she could never replace Caitlin Clark and it's a big rebuilding process. Clark was a once in a lifetime player for a program like Iowa. They are struggling big time. I'm not sure the Associate Head Coach who was promoted to head coach has it in her to be a head coach. It could be that she is not Lisa Bluder. It's so hard to replace a legend. Not every great assistant coach makes a good head coach. I've watched many new head coaches who replaced a legend fail. The fans are already calling for the new coach to be fired. To me, it will take more than one season to build a new team. The players that played with Clark have said it's difficult to play without her.

Guessing the same is true of Frida and Kendyll and Jaylyn's leadership.

I hope we lock up JR for a while. All this talk of Prime's (very important) contract, Tad's lackluster year, she might be the best coach on campus right now. Some bad losses, but another team with a lot of new pieces and tacking on another top 25 win

The 2nd HUGE signature win of the season!

Way to go BUFFS!!!

Buffs Down No. 10 Wildcats

Colorado improves to 4-0 in the Big 12 at home

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER —
A snowy Saturday in Boulder didn't hold back 4,407 fans who filed into the CU Events Center and helped fuel Colorado to a 63-53 upset over No. 10 Kansas State. The Buffaloes erased a nine-point first-quarter deficit on their way to their second ranked-win of the season.

CU junior Jade Masogayo was impactful on both sides of the ball on Saturday. Offensively, she posted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and two assists. Defensively, the Fort Worth native led the Buffs with seven rebounds and had a season-high four blocks.

"I take a lot of pride in defense, especially with my length," Masogayo commented. "I just try to use that to my advantage as much as I can to benefit the team and just help us all out."

Colorado (13-6, 4-4 Big 12) held Kansas State to its lowest scoring output of the season. The Wildcats entered Saturday 10th in the nation, averaging 83.2 points per game and outscoring their opponents by an NCAA-leading 32.2 points.

"I'm just really proud of our team," head coach JR Payne said after the win. "There were a couple of things we worked on every day this week: limiting turnovers, taking care of the ball, and then trying to keep our opponent off the free throw line – to be able to defend without fouling. Those are the two areas that stand out on the stat sheet. I'm really just proud of our team's execution of the scout. Coach TK [Taelor Karr] did a great scouting report. Our team was very well prepared, and then the team really executed it. Big shout out to everybody."

Graduate Frida Formann led Colorado with 14 points in the win. She hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the second quarter, helping the Buffs take its first lead of the afternoon. Graduate Johanna Teder, making her second-consecutive start, put six of her 10 points in the third quarter.

The Buffs sent K-State to the foul line just twice the entire game, committing only eight fouls following a season-high 25 at Cincinnati.

"We just really repped guard without fouling and be aggressive downhill," Payne added. "I think that, again, their [the team's] execution of the game plan allowed the game to end up happening."

Kansas State (19-2, 7-1 Big 12) had two players in double figures, led by Serena Sundell with 13. Former Buff Kennedy Taylor made her first return to Boulder, putting in 12 off the bench.
...

The Buffs forced 11 Kansas State turnovers and only turned the ball over themselves three times in the first half. CU outscored KSU 14-2 in points off turnovers and held a 24-10 advantage in the points at the half.

"That was another thing we worked on all week: being able to attack downhill, being able to hold our drive line versus contact, and things like that," Payne said about the team's ball control. "Our team just really took what we worked on and applied it to the game. I'm proud of us for being able to do that. I think it's good to know we can do that. You see it work, and you see it work against a really good team, so hopefully we continue that same effort."

A Teder 3 followed by a KSU shot clock violation forced Kansas State to take an early timeout with the Buffs by seven, 40-33, at the 8:09 mark of the third quarter. A 6-0 run for K-State brought the visitors back to within one, 44-43, with just under three minutes to play in the quarter.

Teder hit her second 3-pointer and Diew added a layup to give Colorado a six-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

"I was trying to be more aggressive," Teder expressed about her offensive play. "We've been talking about it. As much as I can do for the team and whatever it takes to win, I'll do it."

Kansas State cut the CU lead down to two, 53-51, with 6:13 left to play, but that was as close as the Wildcats would get to retaking the lead.

Masogayo recorded all three of her fourth-quarter blocks in the game's final five minutes, helping hold KSU to 4-for-16 shooting in the quarter. Lior Garzon iced the game with 18 seconds to play as the Buffs closed the day on a 10-2 run.

K State fans saying this was not an upset because their 6-7 center is injured and didn't play.

That doesn't take away that we beat a ranked team.

On board for extending JR.

Hope we can keep Jade here for another season.

When is the last time the Buffs had only 8 fouls and 10 turnovers in a game?

Radio interviewed Assistant Coach Bianca Smith at half time. She came from Tulsa with KMM at a time when WBB fans were not happy that she had been hired and were not renewing their season tickets and the crowds were small.

She made a point of saying that CU didn't draw 4,000 fans for games when she played let alone while it's snowing.

She is correct. It is because of what JR Payne has done that has put butts in the seats.

Watched the last quarter of the Utah at BYU game.

BYU is 1-7 in the conference. They gave Utah everything they could handle but Utah won by 5 points, I think. That's a big rivalry game and we know those kinds of games can go either way.

I want the Buffs to get over their road woes and this game is their chance to win a game on the road.

It was ugly but they won. Great free throw shooting. Again, they let a lead slip away. If they had been playing a good team, they would have lost.

Diew played incredibly well.

Not many butts in the seats. Couldn't tell if there were fans on the side where the camera was located. It's set so you could see the two team benches. There were not very many people there.
