SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The University of Colorado men's golf team is tied for seventh place after nearly a six-hour round here Monday in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.

Winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour made for slow play, so slow in fact that tournament officials called off Monday’s second round and reduced the tournament to a 36-hole affair.

Wichita State, ranked No. 73 by Golfweek, owns a five-shot lead as the Shockers turned in a 14-over par 294 score, with Gonzaga second at 299; No. 64 Arizona is third at 301.

Colorado, ranked No. 64 by GolfStat and No. 74 by Golfweek, is tied for seventh with No. 22 St. Mary's (Calif.), the highest ranked team in the field, with 26-over 306 scores.

"It was a challenging day out there with very strong winds, blowing sand and dust, and slow play," head coach Roy Edwards said. "I thought the guys did a good job overall, despite not playing our best.

"Our team round wasn't good because we had to take a couple of high scores,” he continued. "With one guy totally out of it, it makes it very hard to shoot a good team score. We are only seven shots out of second and are focused on having a great round tomorrow. To do that, we need all five guys to stay in their rounds for all 18 holes."

Senior Derek Fribbs paced the Buffaloes Monday with a 4-over 74 effort on the 7,133-yard, par-70 Talking Stick North Course layout. He was one of seven players to birdie both par-5 holes (Nos. 2 and 17).

"Derek was particularly solid as he didn't get off to a very good start but played the toughest stretch of the course very well," Edwards said.

Senior Jason Burstyn recorded a 6-over 76, with sophomore David Oraee andredshirt freshman Drew Trujillo carding 7-over 77s; Trujillo, however, is playing as an individual here and his score is not counting toward the CU team score. Oraee was tied for second in the field Monday in par-3 scoring.

Freshman Philip Juel-Berg shot a 9-over 79, tying him for 70th and junior Johnny Hayes, playing in just his second spring tournament and the first where his score counts toward the team total, struggled from almost the start and finished with a 15-over 85; he is tied for 116th.

Three players are tied for the individual lead with even-par 70 scores: Curtis Yonke (Kansas State), Glen Scher (UC-Santa Barbara) and Louis Boyer (Wichita State). While no player broke par, 48 players shot 80 or higher, as the average score for the day in the 126-man field was 78.64, well over eight shots over par.

The second and now final round is scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. MDT shotgun start on Tuesday; the Buffs will tee off on holes 4 through 6 and will be paired with Old Dominion, Tulsa and St. Mary's. This is Colorado’s final tune-up ahead of the Pac-12 Championships, set for April 29-May 1 at Los Angeles Country Club.
