Colorado coach Dan Hawkins said the place-kicker position will be open competition this week despite Aric Goodman snapping a slump with 45- and 25-yard field goals against Baylor.
Goodman is now 3-for-6 on the year. Hawkins said last week that freshman Justin Castor would see his first action against Baylor but Hawkins used the veteran Goodman instead on the 45-yarder.
“Yeah, that’s always a kicker by committee so we’ll see,” Hawkins said on Monday’s Big 12 Conference call. “I was proud of Aric. He came in and did a nice job and made both of his so we’ll see how it progresses.”
Hawkins, however, isn’t sure on star cornerback Jimmy Smith who suffered a concussion.
“We think he’ll be all right,” Hawkins said. “We don’t know for sure but we think he’ll be OK.”
He’s certain his team is OK despite dropping to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in league.
“They’re good,” he said. “They are. They’re all disappointed. No one likes to lose. It was a tough game, a close game and exasperating and all that. But we got to get back on the horse and ride. That’s always been our mantra so they’re good to go.”

"...Get back on our horse and ride, that's always been our mantra."? Always? It seems like each new week some meaningless, idiotic phrase becomes their "Mantra". Comedy.

So "getting our horns out", "bringing our lunchpail", "cinching it up", and any other number of moronic catch phrases haven't been the mantra all along?

I'm so confused. Can somebody please tell me what the mantra for this team is? This kind of thing is important. It may be the difference between winning and losing against Tech.

Can somebody please think about our Mantra?!?!?

You are completely missing the Macchu Picchu mystical magic, once the team learns all the mantras, and can recite them in ancient sanskrit while simultaneously tickling the kicker and playing leapfrog, then, and only then, this thing will pop. We are this close to that happening.....
 
Also, when has it ALWAYS been a kicker by committee?

I swear, hawk must be a sociopath with the complete disregard he has for these kids' psyches right now.
 
Maybe you guys aren't considering the possibility that the horse is our problem. Our mantra is to keep getting back on the horse and riding, but maybe the horse is lame. Dan has been so focused on horns and cinching and lunchpails, he just forgot to check the horse. Maybe it just needs new horseshoes. I think that's the DC's job anyway.

Maybe Dan doesn't realize that he is beating a dead horse, of course he wouldn't because he actually is the dead horse.

Maybe the problem is that this horse has been ready for the glue factory since Montana State.
 
Maybe he shouldn't be looking said [gift of an extra year] horse in the mouth before trying to ride it....

Maybe the horse needs to get back up on the horse. Did anybody stop to consider that? Did the horse know the mantra? See, these are the little things that we absolutely NEED to be working on. We'll never get this thing to pop until we all know the mantra. Clearly, the horse does not know the mantra.
 
Wow, guess I hadn't been paying too much attention to where the thread went. I certainly had no intent to get a rant started on Hawk saying for the umpteenth time.

Instead, I was attempting to note his continued manipulation of the kickers with now saying it's a "kicker by committee" after he proved that he flat out lied to Marcus Kirkwood about the job being Kirkwood's last Tuesday then allowing Goodman to kick anything and everything last week. That blog post shows, in his mind, what he did last week (lying) is justified. It's BULL SHEEEAT!

I think it's downright shameful that Hawk has not been called to task on this by the administration, and I can't believe the players are allowing this to happen. I guarantee if Mack Brown pulled BS like that down here, even though he's god down here, there would have been some s**t rain down on him for sure. Instead Hawk is allowed to continue to mess with kids' heads and play mind games with them while at the same time systematically destroying the University of Colorado football program.

I've been a lurker on the board for quite a while, but due to all the negativity surrounding the program and Hawk, never had the urge to post. As a recent alum, I am as disappointed as any on the board about the recent lack of success on the field. Grew up around Folsom, and it pains me to see the state of our current program in such disarray.

That being said, all of this kicker talk is absurd. I don't know who you are Alferd or this character that thinks he's a kicking coach, but of the other two options, one has potential but isnt ready and the other is horrendous. I dont know if any of you watched the display that Kirkwood put on in warmups, but when you can't make a kick without a snap and hold from 30+ yards, I would think it'd be even worse in a game situation. Im not saying that goodman is a great alternative, as his track record speaks for itself (i think hes hit more uprights than we have wins since he started playing), but with him on the field, as shown this week, we at least have a chance to makes some kicks. On rivals, someone mentioned that castor and kirkwood missed 8/12 kicks in practice last thursday from inside 30 yds....doubtful that would translate into success on the field in front of 50,000 plus.

and as for the "expert" kicking coach on the board: 1) why dont you have an actual job coaching if you consider yourself so good and knowledgable? 2) How can you even say kirkwood has a better leg when I watched him miss short from 40 yards at mizzou? 3) what is your opinion on castor and his potential growth? 4) if you consider yourself an expert, what flaws do you see in goodman that make him miss kicks? 5) There is ABSOLUTELY no way that kirkwood could have kicked at penn state....even old ass joe pa has a better eye for talent than that....

Lets hope tyler steps it up this week and we score all td's the rest of the way out...lord knows we need it.

Nice rant, and welcome. But this wasn't about Kirkwood being a great kicker, it was about Hawkins jerking the kickers around - saying one thing, doing another, typical Hawkins bullsh!t.
 
In this case, i dont know if i'd say he was jerking the kickers around. I can GUARANTEE you 100% that had you been head coach, and watched kirkwood warm up, you wouldve changed your mind too. I kicked in high school for my team (i wasnt very good), but do spend some time watching kickers a little more just because of my experience (or lack thereof).

Goodman could be a huge talent if he kicks the ball to his ability. Unfortunately, he hasnt done that at all, but perhaps with a different coaching staff things would be different. Mason got worse under this staff too.....

Yes, convenient that Goodman sat out that practice and two other kickers were on display for this particular poster at a closed practice, isn't it? Convenient...

Hypothetically, if Kirkwood made 62 of 70 kicks, but most of the misses were in the last 10 attempts, he'd look pretty bad if you only saw the last 20 minutes, wouldn't he? If you don't know the circumstances of the kicking "competition" then you can't really say what was being watched, but it's not that hard to make a kid look good or bad, if you choose to insert yourself into the equation as a coach.

Anyway, Goodman got his job back. It was a despicable mind-game with both Castor and Kirkwood, but hey, Goodman made two kicks. I, for one, will not suddenly be comforted that he has made two kicks, make him at precisely 50% for the season. He will kick again, and he'll miss again, at about the same rate he has for the last six years. And CU will limp along as it has. So be it.

My point, which you don't seem to, get is:
do NOT send a freshman out to attempt one kick, then bench him
do NOT tell your other walk-on he's the starter, build him up all week in the media and then pull a trick play and bench him again without explanation.

If Goodman was the best kicker, all along, in the coaches' opinions, fine and dandy, play him. But why do that to the other guys?
Or is this vaguely familiar to the quarterback games we've been playing for a couple years?

What happened out there at Missou and Baylor games was inexcusable. But go ahead, make excuses for that kind of coaching, if you want to. I would NOT treat either player that way.

As a parting shot, I DO know one of the kickers at Penn State and he's terrible. And he's on full scholly, so Paterno is pulling his hair out, because they are stuck with him.

This is what I'm pissed about. That is ****ed up to do to those kids. It is unfair to throw a Freshman into a long FG attempt with the circumstances that were surrounding it. Flat unfair. Same with Kirkwood. Don't tell a guy he has a job and then have him show up for his first day and see someone else doing his work and then fail to explain the reasons to him.

I think we all agree on those issues.

As for who actually does the kicking, I don't really ****ing care. I just want those FGs made. That's why I was a little happy this week because we went 2/2 on FGs. Yes, Goodman has been really bad in the games, but for some reason the other kickers on the team can't seem to prove well enough in practice that they are so much better they deserve to be on the field. I don't know if it is some coaching conspiracy, or if they really aren't performing well. We also don't know if they would do better in the games than Goodman or not. The way to find out is not to stick Castor in for a 40 yard FG as his first ever attempt with all the pressure in the world around him and the kicking game.

The problem is we aren't often in the luxurious position to ease a kicker into the game to get him some experience before he is expected to make a difficult kick in pressure situations. If we want to truly give one of the other kickers a chance, we need to score early TDs and rather than go for 2, give the new kicker an extra point so he can get a feel for the field, the crowd, the view, the pressure, etc. Then hopefully get him a short or mid-range field goal, if we can't continue the drive. These opportunities don't arise much for the Buffs. Except for last game. That could have worked. :huh:

So it is better or worse that Kirkwood was told he was starting last week, but now he's back behind both Goodman (3 of 6 this season) and Castor (0-1) who he supposedly beat out one day last week?
