• Now that Virginia (3-7) is guaranteed its third losing season in four years, it's safe to say Al Groh's days are numbered. However, I'm hearing Colorado's Dan Hawkins -- whose team also fell to 3-7 with a 17-10 loss to Iowa State (6-5) -- will get a reprieve. Colorado's debt-strapped athletic department cannot afford the reported $3 million to buy out the remaining four years on Hawkins' contract.


Don't know who/what his source is but I don't like it.


We must continue to bombard the AD with "Fire Hawkins" e-mails...

The email campaign cracks me up.

I suspect the same 150 people have been sending emails for the better part of 6 weeks.

You want to send a message - withhold your funds. Don't buy tickets. etc.

I suspect I won't be the only CU fan entering "extremely casual fan" territory if Hawkins is indeed retained after this season.

When we play Iowa State and I am certain we are going to lose before the game even starts, it is difficult for me to get excited about the program or justify spending my limited discretionary income on CU football tickets.
 
I think the number of people who know one way or another is limited and no one has any inside scoop. I believe no decision has been made but that Bohn certainly knows that he has to make a decision in the next two weeks.
 
How does withholding money and not buying tickets help the situation? It only compounds the problem for a cash-strapped Athletic Department.
 
I want to see Hawkins get one more year. All of our losses are potential wins had the players had a bit more experience. ie, Hawkins is playing with mostly upperclassmen.

That was the story going into this year. He has made BAD decisions from day one this year. Starting Cody through game 6? Leaving players like Simas on the sidelines while starting Ebner and Espinoza. Since Simas has been given an opportunity finally he is averaging about 20 yards and catch and really producing. We got bitch-slapped at home by CSU! We got blown out by a mediocre Toledo team. We are staring down a 3-9 season and barely won two of them. These would not be happening with a decent coach. He needs to be gone.

Have you watched any CU games this year? CSU, Toledo - both had far less talent than CU. Ditto for ISU and KSU. Missouri is not that good.

CU is losing because they are poorly coached, poorly prepared and lack mental toughness. Boise State has one of the youngest teams in the country and is undefeated.

The underclassmen thing is a big RED HERRING.

I did not see one loss because of inexperience.

Because it prevents the AD from thinking they can get away with putting Hawkins back out there for another year. It comes down to money and if it cheaper to keep Hawkins rather than firing him and hiring a new guy that can win, then that is what they will do. If you stop giving them your money then keeping Hawkins around for another year becomes more expensive than firing him and hiring someone who can win and sell out the games.

If we go 0-12 but sell out and the AD makes tons of money why should they make a change?

It sucks, but that is the situation the AD has put us in.

But it may prevent them from being able to do anything about putting somebody else out there. It may be cheaper to get rid of him if people quit buying tickets, etc., but if the issue keeping him here is a lack of cash (and by all accounts that's the only possible issue keeping him here), I don't see how a bigger lack of cash is going to get rid of him...

That is the risk then... I am willing to bet that the school can afford it. And if they can't then just as I wasn't their charity case, they will not be mine. I worked hard to get into CU and paid a ton to stay there every semseter and don't recall any handouts to graduate either. If I didn't cut it, they would have cut me lose... Why should Hawkins be any different?

Since I have graduated, there has been construction going on at CU nonstop. At worst, this may delay a construction project by a year or two. The funds are there people. Don't kid yourself with this can't afford it stuff. What they can't afford to do is keep him on and have 30,000 homers show up with half price tickets because that is the most people would pay to watch another 3-9 season.

You can disagree all you want, but when Hawkins is back next year, you can only thank yourself for paying to keep him here if you give them any more money... But then again, maybe Hawk will turn it around next year and lead us to that national championship.
 
What about giving money to help with a buyout? That works out better, even if it's only $50.

Also, if the numbers (150 people) are correct, and I'm not saying that they are, you're completely crazy if you think that the AD is going to miss the revenue from your 150 tickets, 150 meals at Folsom, 150 caps and jerseys. Now, if you regularly contribute over $100K to the program....

It follows, then, that the peanut gallery can act on its convictions and the AD won't be impacted financially...

The AD is in a difficult position financially and that is exactly why they can't keep Hawkins another year.

Before the A&M game on a different thread I gave a breakdown on how much money it cost the AD when we don't sell tickets. Even with many of them going for discounted or promotional prices a fall in ticket sales for a single game of 10,000 can easily translate into a $400k-$500k loss to the department. This is not even considering seat license money on non-renewed season tickets or donations to the dept.

From a financial standpoint the AD would be much better off firing Hawkins, even if it means replacing him with a lower priced candidate like a coordinator or small-school coach who would work for $500k-$700k with the promise of a bigger payday a couple years down the road once Hawkins is off the books.

That all said, if the right candidate is found I have no question that the money can be found to make it happen at a substantially higher amount than this.

Why should Hawkins be different?? Because they wouldn't have had to pay you $2.55 million to go away. :cool:

Are you honestly suggesting stopping construction on building projects - classroom buildings, dorms, whatever it is they are building for a couple years in order to fire a football coach??? I thought I was a little over the top about football, but I think you may need some professional intervention... :lol:

My earlier post was talking about how dumb it is to cut off the cash if you aren't getting what you want because the school doesn't have the cash. I agree with it that it might make sense if they do demonstrably have the money from reasonable sources. But frankly I'm not sure how we would ever really know for sure that the money was there, since it would have to come from sources outside the AD budget...

150 was thrown out there as the number of people who might be e-mailing. I don't think anybody was even remotely suggesting that 150 people not spending money was going to affect the budget or Bohn's thinking on firing Hawk...
 
What about getting a loan? I know of a banker in longmont whom I'm pretty sure would be willing to go the extra mile in getting it secured. :cool:

The ISU game kind of tipped it for me. I could buy the youth thing, after all, 75 of our traveling squad are Fr/Soph, but my problem is that the learning curve for youth should be so steep that you would see marked improvement from the beginning of the season to now. I just have not see that.

Not to mention the fact that the decision to retain, if made, will happen well before next year's season ticket accounting.
