Why oh why would he return?
Makes the Friday, Oct. 11th game a tough task in Eugene.
Will give Montez a big time national audience to hopefully outplay him.

He’d be a top 10 pick this year. Not much room to improve his draft value and far more opportunity to get exposed and watch it plummet. Best way to learn and fix his game for the NFL is IN the NFL. Coming back for a Senior season has rarely (if ever?) worked out in the players favor.
Brandt, Kiper, Jerimiah like the move. He’ll get live reps. Not sure he is an NFL starter Day One. Got the home town, little brother thing going as well.

None of those guys are running an NFL team, so I take everything they say with a grain of salt. The Ducks don't do much offensively like an NFL team does, so I don't know how much those reps will help him correct any potential flaws.

Maybe he got a lower draft grade than he expected? No skin in the game for me, just seems like in order to win at UO he won't be focusing on the NFL offensive development type stuff.

They can like the move all they want, but It’s never a good move to give up guaranteed millions and a top 10 pick status. Again, give me a name that it’s worked out for in the player’s favor. Brother situation is very Disney-esque but irrelevant. Huge risk for him to come back

You can not like the reasoning but the home-town school, playing a year with his brother, and being able to graduate was a huge factor, if that's what he considers more important then it's not a huge risk for him.

I trust he got good advice on this matter from many perspectives. Cristobol’s O is not the old Oregon of O. Tempo pistol with big linemen and more complex route schemes.

Selfishly was expecting him to go pro so the Buffs schedule could be 1% more managable. Tough task, NO EXCUSES!
I think the NFL will go the Patrick Mahomes route. Draft a first rounder, sit one year behind a vet and allow the coaches to design an offense around the rookie while he learns how to be a pro. Then its his team in year two. Herbert has Mahomes type of skills, so I think he is making a minor mistake, but he could fulfill all the other goals discussed as long as he does not get injured.

Which do you all think it is worse to be this year, an NFL team looking for a QB, or and NFL team looking for a head coach? (Not counting teams who will be looking for both.)

None of those QBs are 1st round material (The Will Grier "rising on the draft board' thing is hilarious), but I don't see one coach I would want either. The NY Post had Lincoln Riley on the back cover on Xmas. When OK lose to Bama 55-10 will that alter people's opinions?

Haskins and kid from Duke could be R1.

I think he'll be a better prospect next year

but idk why he'd return on a money making level. Save a disaster of a draft process, he was going to be the clear cut #1 guy, even if he doesn't overly excite.

This class kinda reminds me of the 2011 class, minus Newton. Haskins, Lock, and Grier look a lot more like Gabbert, Ponder, and Locker than I'm comfortable with as a fan of a team needing a QB upgrade.

Without thinking or googling, Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck.

That doesn’t mean you’re wrong about him giving up his draft stock. I don’t think he’s as good a prospect as he’s getting credit for and he’s getting terrible business advice because his hype is largely dependent on the lack of QB prospects this year. Next year’s QB prospects are better.

Could be as simple as him wanting to try to win a National Championship, with his bro alongside. Could be a lot of things. I wouldn't call anything he decides as a mistake, even if it ends badly. I know, pussy answer.:D I don't know what that dude's dreams are, maybe that's it?

Both Mannings.

Herbert needs to work on some things.

His family has been worried he's not mature enough to handle the pro game yet. They were very influential in his returning.

For the record, this move is about increasing the likelihood of his long term success and putting off the short term financial gain.

I think about all QB's do these days. Never thought I'd see the offenses I see, in the NFL, that I do now. You don't see many that know how to go through progression.

I just hope he takes out a solid insurance policy for the next year to protect himself. I don't disagree with the logic, but so many things can go wrong vs. the guaranteed money of just showing up.

Assuming they did, good for all of them!

First round covers a lot of ground.
It does but odds are he would be the consensus QB1 which equates to top 10 pick. Regardless, 1st round pick is worth millions guaranteed, and is staying at Oregon to “work on some things” really worth that risk in a QB heavy draft in 2020?

From a business perspective, one should never assume that they can extend a football career by playing for free. There’s no guarantee he stays healthy or improves. Next year, he’ll have to compete with Tua, Jake Fromm, and then there’s always QB’s who emerge late in the process. It’s fine if the player thinks he’ll play forever but if his business advisors are talking about extending careers by playing for free then they’re delusional about how well they can predict an NFL career.

If you’re considered a top 2 QB prospect then you need to cash in ASAP. There’s always a team that reaches on a EJ Manuel or a Christian Ponder in the 1st round.

Maybe his family is wealthy. Manning and Luck had well-off families, deep NFL connections, and very few detractors. You better have all of that to turn down first round money.

It is to Herbert.

I don't know. I assume it was probably a difficult decision.

I'm always in the corner of the kid going and getting paid instead of risking major injury while playing for free, but at the same time, first round QBs are in the pressure cooker from the second their name is announced in the draft.

If he's willing to take the injury risk in order to work on things in a situation he's much more comfortable in, good luck to him. Hope he has a ****ty night on 10/11/19, though.
