Hi! Visiting BYU fan here, looking for recommendations in Boulder/Denver.

the dark horse is the quintessential pre game locale for a Buff game. and, they serve ok food, sorta. a visitor, even a teetotaler, would be remiss to skip it. I apologize in advance if I offer to buy said visitors a shot of bourbon. I mean well.

If somebody chooses not to consume alcohol they will find others doing the same thing.

That said, especially on a game day (weekend) very few of the better places in Boulder, be it about atmosphere or about food, are not going to be serving significant amounts of adult beverages, Boulder is a town where drinking is commonplace. It is also a town where people who don't drink are generally respected for that decision.

Must see is the political forum on Allbuffs. Please drop in and say hi.

Food: Zoe Ma Ma is always recommended (inexpensive, delicious Asian street food with a Michelin star). I'm also enjoying C-Burger right next door to Zoe Ma Ma these days. You'll find plenty of good food on Pearl (West Pearl has better food, East Pearl has a better feel and everything in the middle is touristy, but I still never get tired of it).

Definitely drop by the Stampede on Pearl Street the night before the game. I usually get to The Post (Chicken and Beer) at least 1.5 hours before the Stampede so I can get a seat before things get crazy. Then I'm done eating and near the start of the Stampede.

Parking? You might have to walk a bit but you can generally find parking on the side streets between Aurora and Cascade (between 13th and 9th).

Are you a serious hiker, or a hobby hiker? There is something in the area for you. Happy to make some further recommendations there.

I hope you have a great visit to Boulder, no matter what happens to your team.
Just to be pedantic, I'm pretty sure Zoe ma ma doesn't have a Michelin star, but was awarded "distinction" which to them is like two steps down from a star. Still pretty impressive though

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. Y'all are a funny bunch.

We'll have my 9-year-old nephew in tow, so bars are probably not our first choice (and the whole thing about not drinking alcohol, lol). Also, my mom will be there, who might not be capable of much hiking.

I'm excited to see the Front Range up close. I miss the Rocky Mountains, living on the East Coast.

FYI 9 year old, and grandma, will both be fine at the dark horse for pregame - it doesn't really turn into a college bar until later in the evening. That being said, pearl street is probably a better option.

Also, if (and this is a big if) if the new ralphie is good to go by then, you can often bring the kid by to see her before the game.

yeah, do pearl street. the dark horse is family- friendly-ish until later but there is more for you to do and see on pearl with a kid and grandma. the stampede the night before the game at 7p on pearl is indeed fun. have fun.

I swear in advance the unhoused guy muttering his way down pearl on that day is not me, unless this Delaware game goes super poorly.

It's a tradition to sacrifice a child from the opposing team to the new Ralphie. We abandoned that tradition (because America has gone soft, and you can't trample kids with a buffalo any more) with our last Ralphie and look what happened!

Anyway, if there's a new Ralphie, you (and family) should definitely go check her out.

Nobody suggested a quick trip to the northeast to visit Longmont?

Typical.

FWIW, almost all brewpubs in and around Boulder are family friendly. Most have cornhole or other games. Very rare to see a "must be 21 to enter" sign. You just won't be able to get your nephew into a strip club or dispensary, but your mom should be ok.

Chautauqua is a can't miss. You don't have to hike much to get great family pics. Also, has a great park to throw the ball around with your nephew. They have a dining hall which is good for breakfast. Rocky Mountain National Park/Estes Park is about an hour drive, but well worth it if you want to see wildlife and drive the sights. Elk may be starting the rut. Might see a Moose.

For visitors like the OP who might not have a lot of time but still want to see some of what makes Boulder unique a great place to visit close by is Eldorado Canyon State Park. It is one of the top techical climbing areas in the world. For those who don't climb it is a great place for a picnic with spectacular canyon walls, a good dose of nature, and can be interesting for the 9yo and grandma to see the climbers doing their thing.
