How vanilla was CU against CSU?

I was curious how everyone felt CU was last Friday. Were we trying a lot of what we do? Half? Super vanilla? We obviously didn’t need to get tricky to beat CSU, but how much of what we want to do as a staple did we use?

Of course, I’m wondering if we will have a little more, or a lot more to use against NU.

I did not count but I would be surprised if we used more than 12 different plays all game. You know Chev would love nothing more than putting 60 up on Nebraska. I would bet the house Chev is going to open things up and we will see a few trick plays as well.

Didn't run anything besides base plays on offense. Not even a reverse. When your opponent can't even force you into a 3rd down situation, the offense doesn't get very creative.

On defense, there were some line stunts, some blitzes and some different looks. But there weren't any exotic blitzes shown. I'm not sure that we ever even brought a corner or safety on a blitz.

Seemed like variations of the same play on offense. Some sort of quick out or slant for the most part. It’s clear they don’t want Montez to hold onto the ball. Get it to your playmakers and let them move up field.

Some of what we did against CSU was purposely exploiting the fact that they showed against Hawaii they couldn't set the edge of the defense on either side.

Then look at the big plays:
1) Montez RPO keeper is an offense bread and butter play - no big deal
2) Nixon over the top same thing
3) The BB TD was a new wrinkle, I believe
4) Same with checking to a back shoulder throw to Winfree - that's new
5) McMillian's TD was pure athletic talent and horrible pursuit. The hole wasn't there, so he jump cut to the outside
6) Viska's TD was cutting off his route reading the blitzing corner

So, on our TD's at least, we showed two new wrinkles and a **** ton more athleticism than we showed last year.

The offense was pretty vanilla I thought. They just got the ball out quick and to the play-makers like Chev has been saying all year. I didn't notice any crazy route combinations as they just did not need to do that. I have no doubt in my mind that Chev will open it up against Nebraska, but maybe he won't need to?

I am not really sure on defense as I have a harder time seeing differences there.

No reverses. You know it’s coning off jet sweep.

No tunnel, bubbles or hitches.

No draws, no traditional screens.

Limited motion.

Not much use of TE.

Lots of tight slot, less H-back.

No five wide.

Nothing deep in middle of field.

Limited read option.

Little if any RPO.

Not many changes at LOS.

Lots more to come out of those sets with that personnel. Think Auburn. OU.

CU’s skill players scooped up the most delicious serving of vanilla on the planet.

It’s hard to tell what this OL and DL will look like on the rocky road against chunky monkeys.

A finesse win vs the Nubs will the cherry on top of this thread.

They showed quite a few wrinkles in the first half with viska, who is clearly going to be a large focal point of the offense so Nebraska will definitely be prepared for that. Chev should have plenty of wrinkles with the passing game though.

I’m guessing when it was 21 zero we went vanilla I think all of Shenault passes were no longer than six or 7 yards

Agreed, but I don't remember very many variations and very little passing down the field along with simplified route trees.

I viewed it as pretty vanilla. We didn't have to show much, their athletes didn't match up with ours period, found that out pretty quickly.

Very vanilla.

I think we showed a lot of certain things to force the fuskers to adjust to open some things we didn't show. Other than the fly to KD we ran very little deep. We did almost no misdirection, we ran very few if any combo patterns with the first read downfield. We had almost no extended roll outs and almost no counter action running the ball.

We also avoided showing them much situational offense. We went almost 3 quarters with only a couple 3rd downs, we had very few plays in Red Zone short yardage, we also avoided long yardage situations. We didn't have to show our packages against the blitz, we also didn't have to show our two minute stuff.

As a result the fuskers will have film on us but for the things coaches want I don't know how valuable it will be.

Pretty vanilla on defense, I thought Chev showed quite a bit on offense in the first half.

My problem with Eliot is his lack of creativity-I've never seen a defender on the LOS as if he's going to blitz pre-snap and then drop back into coverage in the two years he's been here. The more Adrian Martinez has to think on Saturday, the better for us.

All we did was out-athlete CSU.

Not sure if that was the game plan coming in, but after the first two drives, it was obvious there was no need going deeper into the playbook.

Defensively, I think it was pretty much the same. There was very little blitzing and I didn't see very much stunting, either.

I think there will be a lot more defensive variety, I don't know what we'll see offensively. It will be very interesting to see how NU deals with the speed of our position players, especially Viska.

There were only 3 on this play against CSU Friday night. And they got the sack with a 4 man rush.

Too bad those of us watching on TV didn't get to see the first two drives.
