Indoor track & field - 2019/20 regular season results and news (Conf. Championships 2/28-29)

Article after yesterday's results. (After an off-week (at least formal competition-wise) for the majority of the teams, I assume most if not all the (healthy) athletes will be in action next weekend.) -

NEW YORK – Colorado track and field stars Dani Jones and Joe Klecker made history Saturday afternoon in New York at the 113th Millrose Games as both secured the second-fastest time in CU history in their events.

Klecker started things off with a second-place finish behind former NCAA cross country champion Justyn Knight in the Dr Sander Men's 3,000 Invitational. The senior opened the first 1,600 meters in around 4:14 and eighth place. Klecker made a huge move with 400 left, jumping up to fourth until the final straight where he finished catching people and closed as the runner-up.

His mark of 7:47.57 is second in school history behind Adam Goucher's 7:46.03, placing Klecker in 19th on the NCAA's All-Time list. The time is the second-fastest in the nation as Notre Dame's Yared Nuguse ran 7:46.71 at the Meyo Invite today. Klecker out-kicked the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Champion, Edwin Kurgat, in the race by two seconds.

In the elite New York Road Runners Wanamaker Women's Mile, Dani Jones broke a 32-year-old record as she finished seventh in a time of 4:27.88, making her the fastest collegiate athlete in the Wanamaker mile since 1988. The race broke into a sprint early, leaving Jones to lead a pack at 4:30 pace as the leaders finished with Elle Purrier breaking the American Record at 4:16.85.

Jones' time places her sixth on the NCAA All-Time list behind collegiate record holder Jenny (Barringer) Simpson, Purrier in second, Leah O'Conner of Michigan State, Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech, Karissa Schweizer of Missouri and Abbey D'Agostino of Dartmouth. She now leads the nation in the event.

Both athletes will move to the 5,000 next week with Klecker heading to the Husky Invitational and Jones going to compete in Boston.

It was a huge weekend for former Buffaloes, as three volunteer coaches competed across the nation. Jenny Simpson set a flat track world record for the indoor 3,000 at 8:51.49. Combined event coaches Carly Paul and Andrew Ghizzone competed at the USATF Indoor Championships Combined Events today at the Naval Academy with Paul placing eighth in the pentathlon at 3,860 points and Ghizzone finishing fifth in the heptathlon with a score of 5,455.

Also for Colorado, throwers and Kellen Monestime competed in the Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open Friday and Saturday. Redshirt junior Caleb Penner won the weight throw unattached with a toss of 17.99 meters. His mark is good for fifth in school history. Monestime finished third in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.39 seconds.

The team separates across the country next week with competitions at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque.

Just because I don't see it otherwise noted, one other positive thing I think (???) Dani Jones time may have accomplished yesterday (IF*** I'm reading the qualifying standard page right)- it looks like her 4:27.88 mile may have given her a qualifying time for this year's U.S. Olympic Trials for the 1500M run. Of course, to be as competitive as I assume she wishes to be by this summer, she'll need to run faster still, but I'd have to guess it still must be nice to be able to check off one of the items I'd guess she may have on her list of 2020 goals.

(***Per note #6 of https://www.usatf.org/events/2020/2020-u-s-olympic-team-trials-track-field/qualifying-standards, it reads to me that 4:28.43 was the mile time needed to meet the 1500M women's standard (which is 4:06.00 for the 1500M distance itself). (This assumes there's nothing weird about rules I don't know about indoor meets and/ or facilities that might exclude her time yesterday, which is possible given my lack of knowledge.)

Note that the Olympic standard itself is lower (4:04.20 per Wikipidea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletics_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_–_Qualification), and she'll need to meet or exceed that mark, along with earning a top 3 finish at the U.S. Championships' final (probably the much tougher requirement given the quality of U.S. runners now), to actually make it to the Tokyo Olympics.)

It's a BUSY weekend for the Buffs, as the athletes (and coaches) will be spread out between 4 different meets, with the individual meets covering all 4 time zones in the Continental U.S..

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will separate into four meets this weekend as event groups head to the Husky Invitational, Tyson Invitational, Don Kirby Invitational and David Hemery Valentine Invite.

A majority of the distance squad and throws will head to Seattle for the Husky Invitational, while Dani Jones and Makena Morley will head to the University of Boston to compete in the David Hemery Valentine Invite while seeking out NCAA-qualifying times in the 5,000. The hurdles and sprinters will head to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Tyson Invitational and the jumpers and combined event athletes will compete at the NCAA Championships site in Albuquerque at the Don Kirby Invitational.

The smallest of those groups will be Jones and Morley, though their group expands by one as volunteer assistant coach Jenny Simpson is in the race. The three will be running virtually alone as Jones and Morley seek to run low 15:20s on the same track that has 16 of the 18 fastest 5,000 times on the women's descending order list and 17 of the top 24 times on the men's side (also 25 of the top-50 times were run on the men's side this season).

On the other end of the country at the Husky Invite, Joe Klecker is joined by Alec Hornecker and Paxton Smith in the men's 5,000 along with Hunter Appleton and Austin Vancil. Elizabeth Constien and Kaitlyn Barthell will be on the women's 5,000 side, while Holly Bent will be in the women's 3,000.

Jonathan Horton, Justice and Josh Ramos will run in the 800 while Eduardo Herrera will run alongside Noah Hibbard in the mile. The women's mile will also be a heavily-contested event with Rachel McArthur, Karina Mann, Annie Hill and Olivia Brooks all running.

At the Tyson Invite, Tamia Badal, Eriana Henderson, Dani Johnson and Valerie Welch will all hurdle while Badal runs the 200, Abbey Glynn the 400 and Henderson and Welch will long jump. The men will focus on the 400 with Nathan Hoy, Garrett Nelson, Kendal Smith and Aaron McCoy in the open. Both squads will also look to run fast 4x400-meter relays.

In the Don Kirby, only five athletes will compete with Davis Butte hurdling and pole vaulting, Jeremy Cody and Kylee Harr focusing on the high jump, Avery McMullen hurdling, high jumping and long jumping, and Cheyenne Cheshier triple jumping.

Action begins Thursday in New Mexico while the rest of the meets commence Friday and Saturday.

A great 5000M race for 3 Buffs (2 current and one #Forever) has just completed in Boston:
  • #Forever Buff Jenny Simpson easily runs the fastest time in the world for the 5000M this year with a 14:58.67. If for any reason she wants an option for Olympic qualifying at that distance (if she decides on this distance rather than her normal 1500M for whatever reason(s)), this run also EASILY met the Olympic standard of 15:10. (Of course, she'd still need to finish in the top 3 (among others who have the standard) at the U.S. Trials to qualify for the Olympics in either race.)
  • The 2 current Buffs racing, Dani Jones (15:17.11) and Makena Morley (15:26.22), also both had great races that should easily give them NCAA Indoor Championship (top 16) times, with Ms. Jones' time also meeting the U.S.Olympics trial time standard (15:20). (Although, most of the running websites assume / think Ms. Jones will be racing in other distance(s) at the Indoor Championships.)
  • Ms. Jones' time, the 1st she's ever recorded indoors for 5000M, moves her to #2 in the all-time Buff record book. (Ms. Simpson ran the fastest 5000M (15:01.70), either indoor OR outdoor, in NCAA history while she was in college). Ms. Morley, who previously had the #2 all-time Buff best time, had a big 10 11+ second indoor personal best tonight.
Congrats to all!

Unofficially, per their live results (https://live.pntfo.com/meets/4314/scoreboard), looks like Joe Klecker has slightly improved his Buff indoor fastest time ever mark in the 5000M by ~2 seconds and, most importantly, now has a time that should definitely be fast enough to qualify him for NCAA's in that distance, as he runs 13:34.091 while winning the fast heat at the Husky Invite.

Congrats to him!

Article after today's VERY busy day of action for almost all the Buff track teams-

BOSTON – Dani Jones is racking up the honors and doing so quickly. The Colorado track and field star ran 15:17.11, the ninth-fastest time in NCAA history in the 5,000, Friday evening here to post her second top-10 NCAA time in just a six-day timeframe.

The senior now has the top time in the mile in the NCAA, second-best time in the 800 and third-best mark in the 5,000 for this indoor season. She hasn't even touched a 3,000 this season but is stacking up the qualifications as she also is a part of the fifth-best distance medley relay.

"Well, they went there because they knew whether there or here in Seattle, to go as fast as they wanted to they probably would have to go alone," said Head Coach Mark Wetmore on Makena Morley and Jones. "So while they didn't get much help in Boston because Jenny was running her own race and the pacers only went two kilometers those are fast times for basically time trialing. Makena was a little too fast probably at 2K and 3K, so she's probably disappointed with 15:26 but the main goal for both of them was to get to the NCAA so they accomplished that and a little more in Dani's case, a US Olympic Trials qualifier in the 5,000."

The senior is just six days separated from her mile performance in the Millrose Wanamaker where she became the sixth-fastest performer in NCAA history with a 4:27.88.

"Tonight was a special night," said Jones. "It was my first indoor 5k, the first 5k I've run for time and my first race with Makena and Jenny this season. I didn't necessarily run the time I wanted tonight, but I'm happy with the effort I put in to tonight and how I've juggled some difficult racing scenarios these past few weeks. I'm also extremely happy to be qualified in 3 events. The coaches have given me a lot of great opportunities to run well and I'm especially grateful for them and Makena and Jenny's company through it all."
...

Across the nation in the finale of a day that featured more than 35 events for CU athletes, Joe Klecker took the win in the Husky Classic 5,000 Invitational heat, lowering his own school record by a second to 13:34.10. The mark places him fourth in the nation and set for a trip to the NCAA with top-five marks in three events. He now owns the top time in the mile, second in the 3,000 and fourth in the 5,000 in the NCAA.

"It was exactly the pace I was expecting," said Wetmore. "66s and then as we say winding up. He did fine, exactly what we told him to do. I tried to convince him two weeks ago, there was a lot of expectation for the mile and then last week at the Millrose and the innervation being in New York and travel across the country. So I told him tonight just race and have fun and don't obsess about the clock but he ended up running as fast as I thought he might."
...

In Arkansas, the women's hurdles and the 400 were strong events with Dani Johnson and Eriana Henderson advancing to the semifinals with bests of 8.42 and 8.54 in the 60-meter hurdles, respectfully. Henderson was also an inch shy of her personal best in the long jump after she jumped 5.85 meters (19-2.5) and qualified for finals.

In the 400-meter dash, Abbey Glynn lowered her sixth-best mark in CU history to 55.04 seconds, just a hundredth of a second from tying for fifth in Buff history. She placed second in the non-invitational sections of the 400. Aaron McCoy ran 57.93 seconds in the fast section of the men's 400 for 13th overall while Garrett Nelson ran 48.36, Kendal Smith ran 48.96 and Nathan Hoy ran 48.97 seconds.

In Albuquerque at the site of the indoor national championships, Avery McMullen ran 8.69 seconds in the 60 hurdles while Cheyenne Cheshier triple jumped 11.14 meters (36-6.75). The jumps and combined event athletes closed out their competition while the rest of the meets extend into Saturday.

USAFA - Colorado track and field sophomore Tyler Sconce had an extraordinary meet Friday afternoon at the Air Force Collegiate Open when he fouled four of his six attempts in the weight throw but walked away with a huge three-foot personal best mark and the fifth-best throw in school history.

Sconce entered the meet having started the season with three-straight personal bests in the weight throw. Looking for a mark that could send him to the MPSF, Sconce let it fly as he fouled his first attempt before setting a personal best at 17.73 (58-2) meters on his second throw that would have put him sixth on CU's all-time performers list. He wasn't done there as he launched his third toss 18.28 meters (59-11.75) to jump to fifth all-time and cap off a new best of nearly a full meter. He fouled all three marks in the finals to finish second in the competition.

Also for the men, Clayton Castro placed fifth overall with a toss of 15.46 meters (50-8.75) while Lars Atkinson placed eighth at 14.61 meters, a personal best. Austin Swanson finished 10th in 13.70 meters (44-11.5)

For the women, Jane Powers had a personal best to finish second overall with a toss of 15.98 meters (52-5.25), good enough to improve her ninth-best performer mark in school history. Gya'ni Sami placed third with a toss of 15.72 meters (51-7) while Elena Opp threw 14.39 meters (47-2.5) and Lauren Whyrick threw 13.38 meters (43-10.75) for 10th. Whyrick also placed seventh in the shot put while Sami placed ninth.

In the horizontal jumps, Cheyenne Cheshier took the win in the triple at 11.48 meters (37-8), while freshmen Avery McMullen placed second in the long with a leap of 5.67 meters (18-7.25), just two and a half inches behind volunteer assistant coach Carly Paul.

In the men's high jump, Jeremy Cody placed second with a jump of 2.08 meters (6-9.75), while teammates Giancarlo Narvarte went 2.00 meters (6-6.75) for sixth and Ryan Charles made his collegiate debut at 1.85 meters (6-0.75).

The Buffaloes head to Seattle next weekend, Feb. 28-29, to compete the in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships at the University of Washington.
