Is Khalil Tate a legit Heisman contender?

He's the best player in college football right now. Can he overcome not really playing much the first 4 games? Ordinarily I would say no, but if he keeps up this dominance, how can he not be in the discussion?

Since coming off the bench against CU, this is what he's done in his last 4 games:

840 yards rushing on 59 carries (that's a ridiculous 14.2 yds/carry) with 8 TDs.

TD runs of 58, 28, 47, 75, 45, 71, 76, and 49 yards. His shortest TD run has been 28 yards.

He's 41/58 (70.7%) passing for 743 yards with 6 TDs and 2 INTs.

Team is 4-0 and averaging 48ppg.

If the college football world worked on a purely factual basis, I'd say yes.

But, since is the real college football world, anyone coming out of the desert is going to need a full year's PR campaign to raise his profile enough to be considered seriously.

Barkley has probably got it wrapped up today with his performance, even though his team came up a point short.

Do both he and Bryce Love share OPOY in the conference? Is there any doubt they are both the best and most valuable players in the conference?

Barkley has 801 yards rushing and 9 rushing TDs through 8 games. Tate has 840 and 8 in his last 4. Barkley also catches out of the backfield and is an elite kick returner, but I thought the rushing stats were pretty striking if you consider Barkley (a RB) the clear Heisman favorite.

tate is probably screwed because he didn't play much until whooping our butts.

love is getting all the talking head love.

if, purely hypothetically, CU gets on a role and wins the last 3, then phillip will be in the convo too.

Damn, those are crazy stats. I suspect national voters will discount him as “well, look how mediocre the Pac12 is this year”, and begrudgingly, they may have a point.

I haven't heard him mentioned but he should be. I didn't even know who he was till he kicked our ass.

That guy is unreal. If they run the table to be P12 champs, it will be due to him. In that case, hand him the trophy.

I love Phil, but no chance. There's no way he overcomes Bryce Love even in conference. Love is averaging over 10 yds/carry, Lindsay is just over 5 yds/carry.

Phil trails Love by about 130 yards rushing on the season despite having 105 more carries - that's like 4 games worth of additional carries.

that's all true-- i'd like to see taz get more national love-- he's having a special year. i think it would take a lot of things going right for him to get into the convo and he's not going to win it but i'd like to see him get the press he has earned.

Where the hell did he end up? I was on a recruiting site and he had offers from blue bloods like USC, etc.

Wonder if they’ll run a QB dive on 4th & goal from the 1. That would sure hurt his stats.

He cannot win it this year as mentioned previously, but AZ might as well go and pre-order some billboards and other media to start the campaign for next year. What if we just had not hit the starting QB late and out of bounds and not had to get this guy started. I think we pretty much would have beat them!

As for PL, I just hope he ends up in the top 3 of RB's in the country and gets mentioned for some awards and gets to take his sweet hair to some award shows. He should get some kind of courage or leadership award.

Top 3 or Top 5 for Doak Walker is what Phil has a shot at, if he gets 1600-1800 yards and 15-ish TDs

I still remember when many of y’all were scoffing at my appraisal of Tate as a special player.

To answer the question: next year, he can win if he stays healthy and the UA OL can keep blocking well enough. He will post gawdy numbers.

Good luck, Tate.

This is what I was talking about.

Tate's numbers absolutely should have him in the conversation, and if he keeps it up in November, he should be on the top of people's lists, considering the competition.

But people have had their favorites picked out for a month now, and it's going too be hard for Tate to get traction with the east coast crowd when he's playing past their bedtime on a channel they don't get.

Probably not. He needs some help from MSU against Penn State on Saturday (or someone else left on PSU's schedule). If UA can then somehow run the table and make it to their first Rose Bowl, then there is a potentially compelling national story to back his candidacy. I think that is unlikely, though. UA's defense is improving but still weak to mediocre. USC is their toughest test left (other than a potential CCG), but road games at Oregon and ASU are no gimmies for UA either.

That's the other problem for Tate. Even if UA runs the table, he probably won't have led them to a victory over a single team ranked in the end of year top 25, except for CCG opponent.

He's on pace to have the best QBR performance during conference play for a QB, ever. By a decent margin too.
