Jalen Sami out for the year

INJURY UPDATE: MacIntyre said freshman defensive lineman Jalen Sami had offseason knee surgery and will miss the season. The Buffs should, however, still have plenty of depth up front on the defensive side. Along with returning starters Chris Mulumba and Javier Edwards, CU also has experience returning in Jase Franke and Lyle Tuiloma as well as redshirt freshman Terrance Lang and Mustafa Johnson, both of whom had outstanding springs. Also expected to vie right away for playing time is true freshman Israel Antwine, who is already turning heads in summer workouts. …

bummer about Sami, but damn. Sounds like we are loaded as **** on the DL!

I'm thinking 10-2 or even 11-1 seems reasonable.

After being so ****ty for so long. it just seems like CU is loaded. Still need a lot of help.
For those in the know. As a CU athlete what kind of health insurance do these kids have? I think a knee is relatively expensive theses days.

Never knew "plenty of depth" entailed barely being able to fill out a two-deep.
Do people realize that we graduated our only DL from last year who would have been in the rotation for a team that had an average DL?

Right now, there is no depth because there is no one who has proved he can play.

There's hope because there is some talent and some veteran experience along with a new coach, but until we see them perform that's just air.

As I see it today, not having Sami means one fewer potential answer to a big ass question.

We should be better and there is some depth from players who could emerge this year, but it is okay to acknowledge it is a thin group right now. Cannot absorb another serious injury.

We have a top ten 7-on-7 football team right now.

Not so much worried about this affecting the coming season, although having Sami in the depth chart would have been nice. But, knee surgery for a guy his size at that position is really concerning to me about long term impact. We will graduate Edwards after this year and could go into 2019-20 with Tuiloma as a Senior and a "hopefully" recovering Sami (RS-Freshman) as our only options at the Nose Tackle position. 2020-21 would have no upperclassmen (unless we get another JuCo guy, wash rinse/repeat). I know that we have had DL issues for a long time but that is so thin that it borderlines negligence.

Antwine came to CU because he was promised to be played at DE but he just might have to be pressed into DT rotation; or we change our defensive scheme to fit our personnel. We have so many OLB/DE guys with talent that will never see the field and not enough interior DL anyway.

No matter what, I really wish Jalen all the best in the surgery and recovery!

Keep in mind the new redshirt rule. We can still play some true freshman up to 4 games this season and Sami could even potentially play later in the season without affecting his redshirt if he is far enough along in his recovery.

Do we know what his surgery was for? Article just says knee surgery, but with the announcement that he’ll miss the season, have to imagine it’s a fairly major operation.

Very true but from the sound of things if he returned it would be very late. Especially with big guys they would have to be highly confident that the knee was solid and ready to go before risking game action for him.

For sure. Absolutely don’t rush him back, but it is nice to have the flexibility now if he is ready.

May not be the case with Jalen but this is something about this rule I hadn't considered before.

A lot of times after a player has a major injury, especially if it is their first major injury, they don't trust their body, they don't trust that they are healed and normal. We have all seen the players who miss a season being hurt then "miss" another season coming back before getting back to playing confidently and at full speed.

For some of these guys if they can get some game action near the end of a season they can go into the off-season with more confidence and concentrate on playing instead of the injury. They can then go into spring ball and fall camp ready to work on their games instead of worrying about the injury. Might in effect give some guys a full extra year.

I thought Antwine came here because he would be given a shot at the 5 technique. That is one of the techniques played by a traditional DE in a 4 - 3 defense. He was never going to be what we call an OLB in our 3 - 4.

Too bad about Sami. Wising him a speedy recovery.

Not sure what you mean, or maybe it is just the way you worded it?

Whether he plays the 3 or the 5-technique in our 3-4 defense he is still considered a "DE". In a 4-3 defense one of the DT has a similar role to a 3-4 DE so the gap responsibility is referred to as the same. The difference is that a 3-4 DE doesn't get eaten up in the wash as much as a 4-3 "undertackle" does because he is not closed off by another down lineman. The best example is the LA Rams' Aaron Donald who has been a DT in his career so far in the 4-3 alignment who will now be a "DE" in the 3-4 defense under Wade Phillips. JJ Watt in a 4-3 defense would be a DT not a DE, as he is in the 3-4 defense. Nobody is confusing those guys with hybrid OLB/DE types like Khalil Mack and Von Miller.

Antwine is big enough to be a legit NT prospect, however he did not want to be recruited as a DT or play as a NT; which is one of the reasons he picked CU (reading between the lines that there is a promise to him about that).

Nobody ever mentioned him being an OLB or stand-up edge rusher so not sure what you were referring to.
