Jalen Sami out for the year

Not sure what you mean, or maybe it is just the way you worded it?

Whether he plays the 3 or the 5-technique in our 3-4 defense he is still considered a "DE". In a 4-3 defense one of the DT has a similar role to a 3-4 DE so the gap responsibility is referred to as the same. The difference is that a 3-4 DE doesn't get eaten up in the wash as much as a 4-3 "undertackle" does because he is not closed off by another down lineman. The best example is the LA Rams' Aaron Donald who has been a DT in his career so far in the 4-3 alignment who will now be a "DE" in the 3-4 defense under Wade Phillips. JJ Watt in a 4-3 defense would be a DT not a DE, as he is in the 3-4 defense. Nobody is confusing those guys with hybrid OLB/DE types like Khalil Mack and Von Miller.

Antwine is big enough to be a legit NT prospect, however he did not want to be recruited as a DT or play as a NT; which is one of the reasons he picked CU (reading between the lines that there is a promise to him about that).

Nobody ever mentioned him being an OLB or stand-up edge rusher so not sure what you were referring to.

We are in complete agreement. There are no DT's in our base D and I don't see him playing NT(not yet anyway). He will be given a shot at DE as promised.

That promise may be rescinded after next year though if we strike out recruiting a NT this year. Or a JC NT next year.

Gotcha. I really hope that we nap a top-notch JuCo (we basically have to at this point) and a HS player at the NT position this recruiting cycle. It is of paramount importance for the next 2-3 seasons. Antwine could transfer he we force him to the NT spot beyond a 4 game "we are desperate" situation that can still preserve his RS.

I think you guys are way ahead of yourself on the Antwine situation. It may turn out he never is asked to play NT. He may in fact figure out himself that he's better at NT and actually likes it. Way too early given we have absolutely nothing but a single sentence in one recruiting article that may or may not have been even accurate, and if accurate, it's difficult to judge how important that was.

On a brighter note, I got another report about Sami being compared to Tupou at same stage. Sami will be a player here.

Is there such a thing as a good, ready HS NT?

Now direct quotes from recruits "may or may not be accurate?"

I think people are getting ahead of themselves, but he was emphatic about playing DE being a main reason he chose CU.

I don't remember that he said it first hand, but if you say so, I'll take it at face value.
What an 18 year old say, how much it really will mean after August or next year or after 3 years, I question. For any 18 year old.

Given, it's the primary responsibility of the NT is to plug the A gaps so others can makes plays one would think all the d-linemen coming out of HS, would at least want to give the DE/DT positions a shot before moving to NT if given the option.

While the NT is arguably the most important position in a 3-4 defense, it doesn't allow a guy to compile sacks or meaningful statlines that get them paid in the NFL. A pass rushing 3-4 DE, who can play multiple techniques on the DL, however, is far more glamorous (Think JJ Watt, Aaron Donald, Malik Jackson, Derek Wolfe, etc).

A few, but they have 5*s and go to Bama or some other top 5 program.

I fully expect them to bring in a JUCO guy in the next class just to give some depth. Probably somebody most of us haven't heard of at this point.

Depth only? Maybe the third guy. We need a guy who can play in 2019 as insurance and a guy who is a true Frosh as well. If that's the same guy, even better .

At this point we could use both. We need a HS guy who can take charge of the position for multiple years but based on our history I'm not counting on getting one who is ready to play right away.

We need to start getting HS guys but we also need somebody ready right away.
