Leavitt to Oregon

SEC head coach in 3 years if he pulls off the same D turnaround at Oregon.
2 seasons at Oregon max. He should have gotten a HC job this year, and we all know it. I think he knows it too; because I doubt he wants too many shots to coach against his players here.

True, but mac might not be coach if it wasn't for his defense.

And Leavitt might not be a college coach without Mac. Do you think Leavitt took the job at the worst p5 school at the because he wanted the challenge or because of lack of options? At the time they needed each other. Things have changed. We will get a good replacement and move on.

And MM would not have a winning season at CU if not for JL!

Regarding truth: JL did not mention MM, that is fact.

You may not like what I am saying, you don't have to agree with it. I don't subscribe to the next man up BS on this one, CU lost the best in the business. I am sure, over time, CU will find a decent DC, be it the next guy or three DC's from now. But today is a bad day for CU football and damage control mode begins - hoping the recruits sign!

Yes your reading into 1 tweet sent out. Make that claim after an interview with more than 140 charactors.

I'm not worried about Leavitt on the recruiting front. Wells is the only JL recruit in this class. I'm sure that he was respected by all our defensive recruits for his ability as a DC and he's charismatic so I would expect they liked him a lot when they visited... but he wasn't a recruiter. I expect that our defensive recruiting will improve with the next hire.

But the real question is on coordinator. Leavitt is in the upper echelon of college football's defensive coordinators. In a year when we lose 8 starters, it's a big task. Probably something that factored into JL's decision. Nowhere to go but up with Oregon's defensive rank while unlikely to maintain CU's defensive rank in 2017. So he took a big pay raise and a better path to a HC job in 2018. And where that leaves CU is with a big task for a new guy that I hope doesn't get judged unfairly if the defense slips a bit and the team is relying more on its offense to win games in 2017. This would have been the case even if JL had stayed.

HCMM, with Lance Carl and Rick George, really needs to make sure of this hire and the 2017 defensive staff. It's a crossroads year coming up.

This move has ZERO to do with money. This was 100% about HCMM pushing him out due to differences! I personally feel CU just lost the second most important coach in the history of CU football and is left with MM!!!
Did JL, by the way, thank MM on his way out? No, he thanked CU, players, alumni and Boulder.
While not a popular comment on this site, I have never thought of MM as a great coach, rather a good leader of a program. I was excited to get JL the day he was hired and enjoyed what he brought the players, the team and the community. I now go from belief to hope, in hoping this program can excel but have serious doubts. This is a sad day in Buff History!

Those Oregon folks are dumb! They should have offered JL what he was making at CU and paid his moving expenses as a kicker. To think that they offered 50% more than CU was offering with a pay raise ($440k more than the 2nd highest paid assistant in the Pac-12)... when it wasn't about the money. The fools!

Good post, I just hate the fact that we finally have a great year and we have to deal with this. I know, it happens when you're good but it's just 1 year.

you said the same stupid **** on Stampede jackass...Just stop the narrative...

**** you.
He's the best coach on the staff and has to take a back seat to a mediocre coach who takes all his shine ... good for him move on get paid ... mac will prove himself who most thought he was, real Soon! LMAO at everyone for pissing and bitching when JMFL takes a better job and gets a raise! BUFF fans are seriously the most ignorant breed in the country! Haha

Been true to the guys I coached and recruited or have been recruiting. I do have a heart, believe it or not. I'd feel like a piece of **** if I did this. My family would ****ing disown me no matter where it was.
If JL's family disowns him, he'll even have more disposable income. Win-win.

WTF are you besides a limp dick?

why are people mad at JL? He's getting an incredible raise at a good program. He promised 2 years. He gave us 2 great years. We don't even play them for a while. lol.
Exactly. He helped CU be great again and he earned a huge payday for his effort. We should send him off with a heartfelt "THANK YOU!"

Wow, you actually did a google image search for limp dick. I can't even fathom how many flaccid peckers you had to look at before getting to that one.

Aren't people more angry about the situation it puts cu in? People can claim they will find another DC as goid but nobody knows that.

Momentum was built, recruiting going well but now things are a bit murky.

Good for him, he got his money, but it's all about CU and how they move forward. He's gotten tons of praise here and should, but people don't have to like his move to oregon.

Mighty big leap, Buff.

Mac was the 2009 FBS Assistant coach of the year. His track record as a DC at Duke was very good. He played for a head coach known as an offensive guru. Mac's a defensive specialist. He is the one that decided to go to the 3-4 and he hired a DC who could execute that. I'd be more concerned if our head coach was an offensive guy and didn't have a track record of improving defenses. It's really his #1 claim to fame and the reason I wanted us to hire him here. He quickly figured out that Baer's defense wouldn't get it done as it did in the WAC and he made a philosophical change.

Leavitt was really good but I think there's a lot of DC's that could be really good within this system.

And I have no ill will towards Leavitt. As Nik says, fixing the Oregon defense will be fast, easy and likely just a 1 year stepping stone. They have the talent and were probably the worse coached unit in football.
