Mark Kennedy new, but soon to be old CU President - Official CU president Thread

Why does Mark Kennedy still want this job under these circumstances?

Leading in this situation will be difficult if not impossible.

Many others would have likely withdrawn under these circumstances.

Should he?

He needs the job.

Same reason the guy in the White House hasn’t resigned... Ego and the fact that this job is a massive step up for his career, even if he fell up to it

Some of it seems minor - but it does show he is willing to inflate things to suit his purposes. Also touches on his fundraising dip, but seems to claim this year is a record high

The council also criticized Kennedy’s fundraising abilities, citing a decrease in fundraising at the University of North Dakota in 2018 that some say was due to his alienation of major donors.
Kennedy cited in his response a recent $20 million anonymous gift for a new business school, which will bring this year’s total fundraising efforts at the University of North Dakota to a record high. He also cited his response in his original application that addressed a “challenging relationship” with a major donor.

Kennedy is a terrible choice as CU president, for so many reasons

A bigger picture problem is that the BoR has such an important role in managing CU and in picking this important position. The regents are voted in by residents of CO and typically on party lines. The state now contributes only 4.5% to the general fund of the system. Why do the voters and the state has so much power over CU Boulder and the other three schools?

Why do they then also make such big decisions on the athletic budget and salary, when CU Boulder only contributes a small portion, about $10M of the $90M expenses -- therefore the state makes the final decision, contributing only 4.5% of about 11% (amounts I don't know for sure).

It's a legacy thing, but state funding has fallen greatly and the state controls and decides too much.
The state owns the land that the University resides...they are the landlord. So, they are in control.

And they built the University for the most part
Wasn't that the issue about the refusal to go back to the Souix nickname? Probably could have scored some points with the Boulder crowd on that one if he brought it up correctly.

The death of the Fighting Sioux lies directly at the NCAAs feet.

Vote happening now. Ganahl seconds the nomination. Question now is does he receive 5 or 6 votes to confirm.

Also, Lucky Vidmar (Kroll's opponent) in the YouTube chat says that the employment contract is already up on the CU website

On page 22 of the thread and you’re just asking this now?

Heh. A denver based non athletic job in a boulder based sports forum. I started a thread in the proper location when I didnt see one and it was promptly modded into here.

Allbuffs gonna Allbuff

I'm sure this lacks context, but the bottom tweet is a pretty frightening characterization of the search process, if true.

Hope the guy works out
I guess we will find out. He’s starting off under a serious microscope, though. He will have a lot of bridge building to do. I have my doubts that he’s up to it.

Me too, based on how he handled the microscope the last week. UND folks are literally celebrating right now

Ok...... Kennedy is getting ****ing PAID. Who is going to get get paid more than double Benson. Here are some other contract highlights:

- $650k/yr year one
- $850k/yr second and third year
- $80k moving budget to come from North Dakota
- $50k for visiting four communities in Colorado outside of Denver/Boulder/Co Springs.
- $50k for turning in a proposal for a diversity and inclusion campaign
- $50k for engaging in outreach efforts. Not sure what that means
- $50k for submitting a strategic plan
- Suite to CU Football games
- 4 season tix to mens and womens bball
- Sponsorship fee to a country club agreed upon between Kennedy and the Regents
- Reimbursement for reasonable expenses

Benson was earning $324k/year, which is well below market rate, but was a discount he gave to CU because 1) he loves CU and 2) he is already oil rich
