Mark Kennedy new, but soon to be old CU President - Official CU president Thread

As a CU alum I'm done. Unsubscribed from all their mailing lists and told them to stop calling me for donations.

Yeah, I'll still watch football.
You’re free to do whatever you want, but I personally think this is a time when CU needs us to step up, not abandon them. CU was around long before Mark Kennedy, and it will be around long after he’s gone. It’s much, much bigger than one person.

I agree. CU is bigger than one person. That person being me.

So your politics are more important than the school? Aren't you doing exactly what people are accusing the Regents of doing?

I’ve been there too.

CU, I should quit you, but I can’t.

I’m just angry and disappointed. I love CU but this hire is just underwhelming. I have a suggestion about leaving politics out if it; don’t hire a politician.

This isn’t a permanent decision but one of the ways I can send a message. Believe me they will not miss my donations. I’m no high roller. :)

What if Kennedy turns out to be a good President?

I’m as disgusted as anybody over this. It was a mess from the get go. But if he turns out to be good for CU, don’t we have to acknowledge the Regents who put him there?

I’m highly skeptical, but I’m willing to wait and see.

The methods of the search and choosing Kennedy are suspect at best. That alone is enough motivation for me to open the door for all regent challengers.

If Ilana Spiegel is elected, say goodbye to Rick George. She is on the same page and was endorsed by Lesley Smith, who hates CU football. What's missing in the inane comments here is that John Carson is a big supporter of CU football!

This has become a 100% partisan issue - with Spiegel, Linda Shoemaker, Lesley Smith, Irene Griego and Jack Kroll, that's a 5-4 vote to end all support for CU football from the CU Board of Regents. In that case, 4 republicans supporting CU football, 5 democrats opposing it.

Read Adam's Board - if John Carson is not reelected, it's a big issue for CU football.

Lol CU football isn’t going anywhere.

I think if a few Regents had their way, the entire athletic department would be disbanded. That’s not an exaggeration. Thing is, he’s right when he says it’s the Democrats on the board who feel that way. I have no idea why they feel like athletics is contrary to their view on how how the University should be operated. Remember, Kroll and Griego voted against Tickers contract even though they know its not paid from school operating funds. They did it because they thought that money could be spent better elsewhere (even though it was pointed out to them that that money isn’t available elsewhere). The problems we have with the Republicans who gave us Kennedy are similar to the problems we have with the Democrats who seemingly want to eliminate athletics.

In other words, the system for choosing University leadership is FUBAR.

And Kroll and Shoemaker should be voted off. They are awful.

There are plenty of Democrats who support athletics and football specifically

Yeah, I can’t disagree with any of that. I just don’t see a world in which CU doesn’t have athletics, especially football. Nobody else is paying you 20-30 million dollars a year to teach kids math. Our regents are a joke, can you imagine if this happened at a school in the south? Those regents would have been at the stake that night.

Regents aren’t going to try to kill football or athletics. Way too many athletic department donors are also academic donors.

I don’t disagree. Merely pointing out the fact that the Regents who clearly come down on the anti-athletics spectrum are Democrats. That’s not debatable. And good luck unseating either of those incumbents. The time to defeat them was in the primaries, and that didn’t happen.
The good news is that Kroll likely tries to jump to another office soon.... But Allbuffs endorsed Lucky Vidmar (and he almost won), so Kroll didn't have a lot of support here, that's for sure

I think the obvious solution to this problem is to get rid of the Board of Regents. Really. It makes no sense that people who have no clue about higher education vote for candidates who have no clue about higher education to run the largest educational system in the state. Oh, and one of the largest employers in the state, too.

Anyone who knows me from the P&R board knows I hate government by constitutional amendment, but in this case, it's warranted. There needs to be a change in the state Constitution that disbands the elected Board of Regents and replaces it with a nonpartisan board appointed by the legislature. Still not a perfect solution, but at least you would have people who know about higher ed on the board, and not people who are political climbers.

Frankly, I think an amendment like this would normally face significant headwinds, but this Kennedy bull**** would likely give a boost to its chances.

This issue for me to thinking what makes a “Democrat” Regent and what makes a “Republican” Regent. To me, both should advocate and work for excellence at CU across the board. There should be no division there. I can see a Democrat working towards minority recruitment, increased state funding, lower tuition costs, and a broadening of the academic spectrum. A Republican should be about diversifying the curriculum to include some more conservative thought, budgetary responsibility, business school and sciences focus, etc. Not one of them should have an issue at all with athletics. Athletics is an integral part of the University. It’s been an integral part of the University for over 100 years. Partisan politics doesn’t enter into it.

Nobody is going to confuse me with a Democrat even though I was one for many years starting with my first voter registration at 18.

Anyone who tries to make the BOR a Democrat vs. Republican thing is full of crap. Unfortunately we currently have a BOR which is very political but it hasn't always been that way. There have been some outstanding regents from each party over the years (and some terrible one as well.)

@dio is correct. The qualifications for BOR have little to nothing to do with political affiliation. It is about a group of individuals who can oversee and manage an organization with a huge budget, multiple locations, thousands of employees, and multiple missions.

Ideally that board would be a bi-partisan appointed group but until then we need to figure out how to elect better qualified individuals and looking for a D or and R isn't a part of that.

If we have the right people then the value of athletics is obvious and will be supported. We will also see the teaching and the research functions of the university supported and enhanced and the university focused on serving all the people of the state.

I just hope Ganahl sticks around. She is the only one who opens up about anything (her podcast with Adam was very revealing and I respect her for telling us fans) and fully supports the athletic department because she realizes the reality of the costs there. I don't think people are saying that there aren't democrats that support college athletics, there are a couple currently at CU, but it does seem like a lot of them that get positions at CU use their anti athletics agenda more often than other schools.

Ganahl would be the one regent I could see my way to continuing to support. She does not appear to play politics the way that the others do and she is an advocate (rather than just an ally) for athletics.

She supports athletics, for sure, which I appreciate..... But she plays politics as much as anyone on the board and is a primary driver for the Kennedy fiasco.

I voted for her last time. Won't vote for her again

Why would you play with fire by removing one of the only true pro-athletic Regents from the board?

Because I personally have more vested interest in CU than athletics, and Ganahl is part of the overall BoR issue.

She has also done more than send a tweet about Polis. She described the people opposing Kennedy as the mob, she confirmed that Kennedy serves an important role in balancing conservative thought at the University, and she discounted hascriticism of him as politically motivated. She has also leveraged her position on the BoR to advance her political position in the state - highlighted by her advancement of Trump at GOP state conventions and attacks on Polis.
