#18 ranked*** SOCCER (4-1-0) continues its season starting home stand as they host 2 more teams at Prentup Field this week.. 1st off is a Thursday evening match against the DU Pioneers (4-2-0), followed up by another Sunday noon match, this time against the Weber State (out of Ogden UT) Wildcats (0-4-2).
(***Must say I'm a little perplexed that, as I also mentioned in last week's thread, the Buffs are still showing as undefeated in the NCAA's poll (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d1/united-soccer-coaches), so not reflecting the loss to now #2 North Carolina. Also, as with last week, CU isn't ranked at all in the topdrawersoccer poll (https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-national-rankings/women).)

As with the other home matches so far this season, looks like streams for both of this week's will be available for those with premium ($) ESPN+ subscriptions. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

A local game against Denver this Thursday? I'm planning on watching that one on ESPN+.

DU @ CU

Big match for both sides Thursday night in Boulder. CU has not played anyone else as much as they have DU, a total of 30 with the Buffs winning 20 including 12 straight. Both teams have lost by a goal to UNC at home earlier in the season. DU is 4-2, with 4 straight wins after losing their first two at home by one goal each (UNC and Idaho State). Their signature win was 3-2 at Texas A&M. The Buffs are 4-1 with only one non-conference match after this; hosting Weber State on Sunday.

On the season CU is averaging 2.6 gpg to DU’s 1.83 while CU is surrendering 0.8 gpg to DU’s 0.83. Shyra James is leading the Buffs with 5 goals while Ava Priest (Boulder) has 3 assists. DU is led by Ella Frost has 3 for DU and Michaela McGown (Broomfield) has 6 assists.

Buffs and Pioneers Renew Rivalry

No. 18 Colorado hosts Denver on Thursday

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER
— The long history between Colorado Soccer and its down-south neighbors, the Denver Pioneers, continues on Thursday at Prentup Field (7 p.m. MT/ESPN+). It will be the 30th meeting between the two programs, dating back to 1997.

Colorado (4-1-0) moved up four spots in the United Soccer Coaches rankings after its win last week at UNC Greensboro. The Buffs start the week at No. 18 in the nation, their highest ranking since reaching No. 17 in the Oct. 1, 2019 poll.

The Pioneers started the season 0-2-0 but have since won their last four matches, including a 3-2 win at Texas A&M.

"Denver is really on a roll," head coach Danny Sanchez noted. "They had a disappointing result in the second match of the season, but since then have run off four in a row, including a win at Texas A&M. They're playing really good soccer right now."

The Buffs will be unexpectedly well-rested come Thursday. Colorado traveled to North Carolina for two matches last week but, due to severe weather, was unable to play the Sunday match against then No. 25 NC State.

"I felt that we played well against UNC Greensboro, and it was disappointing not to get the match in with NC State," Sanchez added. "The silver lining is it did give us a little more time to prepare for Denver, which we know will be a battle."

CU has won 12 consecutive matches against the Pioneers, with all but four being a one-goal result. The 12 straight wins are tied for the program's longest active winning streak, along with 12 consecutive decisions over Northern Colorado. The last time Colorado fell to DU was a 3-0 result at Denver on Sept. 15, 2013.

"This is a game both teams circle on their calendar," Sanchez continued. "It's our non-conference rival. What's happened in the past doesn't mean anything. The records don't really mean anything. If you look at the results over the years, we'll have to play good soccer to get a result on Thursday."

Thursday's match marks the first of two at Prentup Field to close the non-conference schedule. The Buffs have protected their home field well this season, outscoring opponents 12-4 with a 3-1-0 record. Colorado has compiled a 6-3-1 record at home in its last 10 matches.

"Our supporters have been fantastic this year," Sanchez expressed. "We expect two more big crowds this weekend. They really energized the group and we don't have a lot of home matches left after this weekend. We really need to take advantage of being at home."

Thad Anderson will have the call for ESPN+ on Thursday.

Fans at Thursday's match will receive a Global Celebration t-shirt while supplies last.

It’s now thirteen in a row for the Buffs v instate rival DU. It was a fairly even match for much of the time with both teams limiting quality chances by the other with last second close downs and blocked shots. CU did have flurries of activity in the box and earned a lot of corners but couldn't break through.

The match looked to be headed for a nil - nil draw until Juliuana Heyward was fouled about 20 yards out in the 77th minute. Shyra James took the free kick and hit a scorching worm burner that forced DU’s keeper (Alina Santos) to parry the ball wide where Ava Priest had positioned herself to get to the ball first and buried the rebound.

CU managed the rest of the match very well not allowing DU any dangerous opportunities. In the last five minutes or so they were able to hold the ball in the corner multiple times, cutting down the time DU had with the ball.

Props to DU’s #3 Michaela McGowan for bottling up CU’s Ava Priest who is very good at setting up her teammates. More often than not, McGowan won the 1 v 1 battle when Priest tried to get to the end line with the ball. For CU, Faith Leyba continues to be a very reliable central defender by both sticking with her mark and closing down on attackers who look to have gotten free.

CU v DU could happen again in the NCAA tourney this year.

This was the first time I’ve been able to watch in person for about three weeks. CU is now (looks like they started doing this a few weeks ago) going with three on the back line with two wingbacks, three midfielders and a pair of forwards. Senior Phoenix Dawn Miranda has joined Faith Leyba and Greer Maguire on the back line. Starting formation looks like this:

H Leyba James

Hayward Layne

Priest Rosenbaum Gouvin

Maguire - F Leyba - Maguire

BOULDER — Colorado newcomer Michaela Rosenbaum didn't have much time to get acquainted with her new Colorado teammates before hitting the field in the Black & Gold.

Unlike the Buffaloes' two other transfers for the 2024 season, Laura Gouvin (Boston College) and Sami Fisher (Florida), who joined the team in the spring, Rosenbaum arrived in Boulder at the start of preseason training.

It wasn't like Rosenbaum was unfamiliar with the Buffs, having previously visited Prentup Field with UCLA in previous seasons. The Santa Rose, Calif., native started 20 matches and played in 65 over her four-year career for the Buffs' former Pac-12 rival from 2020-23, including helping the Bruins in their run to the 2022 national championship.

With one remaining COVID year of eligibility, Rosenbaum went to the transfer portal and found a new home in Boulder for 2024.

"I wasn't sure if I was going to take it [the extra year]," Rosenbaum explained of her decision. "I entered the portal to keep my options open, Danny [Sanchez] reached out, and had a call with him, and he really piqued my interest. He talked about the team a lot, and the team culture here is really great. That stood out to me. I went to visit the school, and I loved it. I felt very welcomed."

CU head coach Danny Sanchez recalled that the interest in Rosenbaum was immediate.

"Obviously, we coached against her for four years, and once we saw that she was in the portal as a grad student, I reached out probably day one," Sanchez said. "Fortunately, she'd been to Boulder and was familiar with us and a little familiar with our coaching staff. She wanted a change of scenery for her fifth year, and maybe we thought she would have an opportunity to make a big impact on the field, and she's been great so far."

Colorado already had a large portion of the 2023 roster back for 2024. The addition of Rosenbaum brought the incoming class to five players. But in reality, Rosenbaum and freshman Hannah Puff are the only true newcomers, as Gouvin, Fisher and freshman Jace Holley all trained with the team in the spring and got to accompany the Buffs to Europe in May.

"I didn't really know anyone coming in," Rosenbaum noted. "I went to a camp one time with Lola [Stanley] a long time ago. Rachel [Rosen] reached out to me so I was kind of talking with her before I came in. I was a little nervous, but I had nothing to worry about. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. I feel like I'm just building relationships every day here."

Rosenbaum has been a fixture in the Buffaloes midfield this season, having started all six matches. She had her best performance as a Buff in Thursday's 1-0 win over Denver, playing 76 minutes and recording a season-high three shots.
...

Like a true Californian in Colorado, Rosenbaum also looks forward to experiencing the cold weather and the chance of playing in the snow down the road.

"I didn't grow up in the snow at all," Rosenbaum laughed. "I think I once went to Lake Tahoe when it was snowing as a baby. It's definitely going to be a new and interesting experience, but I'm excited. I only have a little scooter taking me around campus, so we'll see how it goes in the snow, but everyone on the team has been great with offering me rides."

Micky, as she's called around the team, has brought her own fan base from the West Coast. Her family has already made the trip to Boulder, and more are scheduled.

"It's been great having them come to as many home games as possible," Rosenbaum expressed. "It's not like in LA, where they are somewhat close. I love having my family out here. My mom is coming later this month for my birthday, so I'm really excited to spend the week with her."

Rosenbaum and the No. 18 Buffs close the non-conference schedule with Weber State on Sunday (Noon). It is the team's First Responders Game. There will be a pregame Touch-a-Truck event featuring first response vehicles.

Brad Thompson will have the call on ESPN+.

No score at the half.

While I've been watching it looks pretty even, although the Buffs did have a penalty kick which the Weber St. goalie was able to save.

some beautiful passing frees Priest up in the box and she just gets a soft shot in past the goalie in the 59th minute to put the Buffs up 1-0. Assists to Rosenbaum and Hayward.
