BOULDER—The No. 20 Colorado women's soccer team returns to Prentup Field for its first Pac-12 home matches of the season.

Colorado faces its toughest task to date on Thursday, playing host to No. 7 Washington State. The Buffs will conclude the weekend on Sunday against Washington.

Thursday will be the battle of the unbeaten. Colorado (9-0-3, 1-0-2) and Washington State (10-0, 3-0) are two of the NCAA's five remaining unbeaten teams. The Buffs picked up two draws at Arizona State and Arizona last week, continuing their streak. The Cougars defeated Oregon State and Oregon in Pullman.

"If you told us at the start of the season that we would be 9-0-3 I do not think there is anybody that would not take that," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "We also know we need to get bigger results. Some of the teams we played earlier have not helped us as far as their wins and losses, which is fine. The great thing about playing in the Pac-12 is we have all these great RPI games coming up."

Of the five unbeaten teams, Washington State is the only one to have not played to a draw this season.

"They are on a roll," Sanchez added. "They are playing very well. They have a lot of very good results, including a win at UCLA. We look at it as a great opportunity against a very good team at home. A match like this, with two top-25 teams at home, does not happen very often."

WSU is led by Morgan Weaver and her six goals on the season. She also leads the team with 14 points. Maddy Haro is tied with Taylor Kornieck for second in the nation with nine assists. WSU's Maegan O'Neill is also the Pac-12's reigning Defensive Player of the Week.
...

Washington enters the week on a two-match winning streak. The Huskies scored a pair of 1-0 wins against Oregon State and Oregon. The Huskies (7-3-1, 2-1-0) have not given up a goal in almost 200 minutes of play.

Watch: Tune into the Pac-12 Plus on Facebook live to catch Thursday's game against WSU (3:30 p.m.). The game will also be streamed on Pac-12.com/live/cubuffs. Sunday's game against UW (1 p.m.) will be televised across the Pac-12 Networks.

In the Stats: Colorado continues to be the top-scoring team in the Pac-12 this season. The Buffs rank fourth in the NCAA, averaging 2.83 goals per game. Washington State is fifth in the conference (2.30) and Washington ranks seventh (1.64).

The Buffs added two more assists on the season last week. They continue to lead the NCAA, adding to their school record with 40 on the season.

Colorado (.39) and Washington State (.50) are second and third in the conference in goals-against average. The Huskies are eighth with a .87.

Promotions: Thursday's game against Washington State is Donation Day. Fans can bring lightly used athletic equipment to donate for free admission to the game.

Sunday is the annual Soctoberfest game. The first 250 fans will receive a ticket for CU soccer pint glass that can be redeemed after the game. It is also the team's Alumni weekend. Players from the past 22 seasons will be recognized at halftime. Ralphie will also run prior to the game. She will be at Prentup Field one hour prior to the game.

Live stats (Both matches)

The season kind of turns on the results of this week. It's the difference between being position to challenge in the conference and get a good seed in the NCAAs versus being a solid team that will finish in the pack while likely getting an invite to the dance as an unseeded traveler.

GOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL Korneick on a header off an early corner kick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goal details per live stats-

"
1:22 Header GOAL by COLO Kornieck, Taylor (FIRST GOAL); Assist by Greening, Erin; Goal number 4 for season.; header off of corner kick

11:35 GOAL by COLO Baucom, Jorian; Assist by Barton, Tatum; Goal number 9 for season.; scored off of goalie mishandle
"

And, 2nd goal highlight-

Oh s**t - Puketapu has to be helped off the field- not able to put any weight on one of her legs.

And it's still 2-0 at the half.

(This one is FAR from over, as WSU has been very threatening, and have 2 off the posts already.)

YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Massey GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Live stats- "82:57 GOAL by COLO Massey, Megan; Goal number 2 for season."

Arrived at the match after about 10 minutes or so of playing time. And of course I had missed the first two goals scored by the Buffs. From that time on it was Wazzou who was dominating possession and chances. But they weren't able to score in the first half. CU was playing with fire by ceding possession and eventually the Cougars broke through on a wonderful shot from a very tough angle. Of course this energized them and they kept the pressure on. Still, CU was able to get some chances on counter attacks and eventually it paid off with Masey goal which effectively sealed the deal for the Buffs.

Make no mistake, Washington State was a very, very good team and will most likely be very disappointed with today's result. They played with passion, pride and skill.

Huge win for the Buffs.

BOULDER—The No. 20 Colorado women's soccer team handed the No. 7 Washington State Cougars its first loss of the season on Thursday. The Buffs scored two early goals and held on for the 3-1 win at Prentup Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Buffs found the net before anybody had time to find their seats
...

KEY STATISTIC: It had been almost two years since Colorado defeated a ranked opponent. Washington State entered the day at No. 7 in the nation. The win over WSU is Colorado's first since defeating No. 9 UCLA back on Oct. 27, 2016 (1-0)

BY THE NUMBERS:
Colorado

Goals: 3
Shots: 15
Fouls: 14
Saves: 9

Washington State
Goals:
1
Shots: 25
Fouls: 17
Saves: 3

UP NEXT: The Buffs stay home on Sunday for a televised contest against Washington. It is Alumni Weekend as well as Soctober Fest. Fans will receive vouchers for a free pint glass after the game while supplies last. The game is set for a 1:05 kickoff.

Notes: Washington State was the last remaining team in DI to not suffer a loss…WSU (No. 7) is the highest ranked team the Buffs have beaten since the team's overtime win over No. 5 Texas A&M in 2010…the win is the 34th of Tompkins' career, good for second in program history…Kornieck's goal was the fastest this season and the third fastest in program history…Kornieck now has 22 career goals, tied for fifth in program history…she is now tied for fourth in program history with 61 career points…Baucom's goal was her ninth of the season…Massey's goal was her second.

QUOTABLE:
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On overall performance
"Any coach wants to get off to a good start. We knew this was going to be a huge game against Washington State. Sometimes with attention to details, you come out and are just a little bit sharper. I thought we started well but then I thought we were fortunate to get out of the last 15-20 minutes of the half at 2-0. I thought we defended well. They have really dangerous attackers. Morgan Weaver is a top Pac-12 striker. I was concerned about the first 15 minutes of the second half and that came to fruition. We came under a ton of pressure They got a well-earned goal and we got lucky on a couple of others. Having said that, I think we had some good chances as well. The key to the game was that third goal. That put it to bed. They are a great team. They are coached well and they will be an NCAA Tournament team. So it was a good win for the Buffs."

On the impact of the win
"It does not get any easier. Our focus now turns to Washington. We are pleased to get the win obviously, but we know that every game is going to be a battle like this. We got a couple breaks in front of the goal and sometimes you make your own breaks. I thought we were very clinical in the final third."

Junior Taylor Konrieck
On Pac-12 play
"This was our first real test and we passed it. I think as a team we do well when we score early. We get in that mindset and we want to keep scoring. I feel like that is just our mindset."

Box score - https://cubuffs.com/boxscore.aspx?path=wsoc&id=11375

Wash St probably should be disappointed. They controlled the play most of the time but could not score. Their goal was a great goal but It seemed as if it was like CU last week in Arizona, get chances but just could not finish. Pikatapu walked off the field and back on for the second half and mentioned to somebody that she was all right. CU did better when they controlled the ball and not just kick it back to Wash St. When they slowed it down and moved it up the field they took the pressure off but it seemed to me that all to often they would just boot a long ball and Wash St would get the ball right back. I also think the defense played well inside the box. It was a nail bitter for sure

Edit - With Volleyball starting at noon, chance for a douBuff*** (double) header tomorrow for interested Buff fans.
(***Sorry for that, but I'm always jealous of punny people; this was the best I could come up in this case.)

Come on soccer- keep that undefeated record, and pick up 3 points against the dawgs!

Opening kick (after Ralphie) probably 10-15 minutes away.

Wanted to note, in the Buffzone's cool preview of the match (http://www.buffzone.com/soccer/ci_32189089/game-preview-washington-at-no-20-colorado-soccer), they noted that a couple Buffs (both only juniors) are working their way up the CU record books-
"... Notes: With her goal in Thursday's win against Wsahington State, Kornieck moved into a tie for fifth all-time at CU in goals (22) and a tie for fourth in points (61)...Tompkins' win Thursday was the 34th of her career, breaking a tie for second among CU's career leaders and leaving her just three wins shy of matching Jessica Keller's program record.."

GOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL Baucom off a beautiful Greening pass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Live Stats-
"
28:06 GOAL by COLO Baucom, Jorian (FIRST GOAL); Assist by Greening, Erin; Goal number 10 for season.; cross into the box volley
