#20 ranked (per topdrawersoccer) SOCCER (8-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 in Pac 12 play), over 1 month since the start of the season, finally has its 1st 2 match road trip this year as they head up to Oregon to face the Ducks (0-7-2, 0-1-0) Thursday night, followed by a Sunday matinee with the OSU Beavers (3-3-3, 0-1-0).

Looks like the 1st official RPI report has been released for the 2023 season (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d1/ncaa-womens-soccer-rpi). In it, the Buffs are at #63, while Oregon is #217 and OSU #90 .
(Obviously early in conference play, but based on those RPI numbers one could say it will GREATLY help the Buffs to earn good points this weekend (4 at minimum), which NEVER seems easy when facing conference foes, and is often even harder to accomplish on the road. Winless Oregon (outscored 3-17 so far this season) EASILY has the worst RPI in the Pac (Washington's next highest at #109), while OSU's is 9th in conference (ahead of the Utes, Huskies and Ducks). CU's RPI is currently 6th in conference, between ASU who is at #53 and Arizona at #67.)

The Oregon match is showing available via "Pac 12 Insider", while OSU's match isn't showing any video available. (More detail and links provided near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

I put these two games in the "must win" category as neither Oregon or OSU are good this season and in a tough conference the Buffs need to take advantage.

EUGENE, Ore. – The Colorado soccer team continues its farewell tour of the Pac-12, hitting the road for the first time in league play. The Buffaloes will open the week at Oregon and cap off the trip with a visit to Oregon State.

Colorado (8-2-0, 0-1-0) couldn't have more of a contrasting open to the Pac-12 season. The Buffs dropped their opener to No. 5 UCLA last Friday and now draw an Oregon Ducks squad still searching for its first win of the season.

For the Buffs, it is the first extended road trip of the season. CU is 2-0 away from Prentup Field this season with wins at New Mexico and Denver.

"I think whenever you go on the road especially since it's our first big road trip, there's a heightened attention to detail," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "We're excited to get on the road and compete against Oregon and Oregon State. It doesn't matter what you've done before, it's all about what you do going forward. This is a big opportunity for us to get back on the winning side of things and hopefully build momentum as we get to the meat of the Pac-12 schedule."
...

Colorado has been able to rely on James' offense to this point in the season, but it has been 213 minutes since a CU player not named James has scored a non-penalty kick goal.

"I think some players within our squad still have an opportunity to break out this year," Sanchez expressed. "We know what Shyra is capable of doing. But there's been some really good performances that just haven't quite got that final piece. We still have half our season to go and we know that we have players that are capable of supporting the attack."

Thursday's kickoff is a late one, set for 8 p.m. MT, and will be on Pac-12 Insider and CUBuffs.com/WatchSoc.

Buffs generally NOT doing well possession-wise early, but then James takes the pass from an intercepted pass by Priest one of the few times they are deep in the Duck zone to give the Buffs a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute!

Ducks tie it up in the 29th minute off a corner kick. (It's their 1st goal at home this season.)

A deep (near midfield) Rosen free kick in the 64th minute goes into the middle and eventually finds Clark's foot and she pounds it in and the Buffs go up 2-1.

And, before I can post this, Layne nicely controls the ball and pounds another one in in the 65th minute. It's 3-1 Buffs!

good win. played much better in the second half and was more aggressive. I wonder if the turf caused them some issues and something they had to adjust to. They seemed discombobulated in the first half

EUGENE, Ore. – The Colorado Buffaloes dominated the second half on the road against Oregon on its way to a 3-1 victory Thursday night at Pape Field. The win marked CU's first conference win of the season and its first on the road since the 2021 season.

Colorado (9-2-0, 1-1-0) got on the board first behind a goal from senior Shyra James. Oregon (0-8-2, 0-2-0) would get back to even just past the midway point of the opening half, but from the first touch out of the locker room the Buffs dominated, scoring two goals in the span of 61 seconds from Ally Clark and Emerson Layne to put the game away.

"We knew this was a dangerous game, Oregon's much better than its record," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the game. "We got the early goal from Shyra [James] but it really was against the run of play, Oregon deservedly tied it. I was really pleased with how we kept our composure. Sometimes when you are winning a game like that you can start to press but I thought the second half we played really well. We kept our composure, created a lot of chances and had very good goals from Ally [Clark] and Emerson [Layne]."

The Buffs controlled the ball throughout the second half, outshooting Oregon 22-10 overall but 12-4 after halftime. Goalkeeper Jordan Nytes made two saves early but did not see a shot on goal after the Ducks goal in the 29'. Senior Lindsey Smith came on in relief for Nytes in the 85th minute.

"Oregon came out with something to prove," Sanchez commented. "They had a lot of really good chances and a lot of long-range shots early in the match that Jordan [Nytes] dealt with that kept us in it."

The Buffs stay on the road but don't have to travel far, taking Oregon State (2 p.m. MT) on Sunday. The Beavers (3-3-4, 0-1-1) tied against Utah on Thursday night.

Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On the second goal

"We had to find that second goal. As the game was stretching on it's just human nature to start to press a little bit. Ally [Clark] smashing that ball in after a nice serve from Rachel [Rosen] was key and then we fed off that momentum and Emerson [Layne] getting the next one."

On winning on the road
"I told the team after the game you go on the road anywhere against anybody is difficult. Especially coming in to play on artificial surface that we never play on in the fall. You have to have a different mentality when you go on the road, and the mentality we have the second half is the mentality we need going forward if we're gonna get results."

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Colorado soccer will look to sweep its final Pac-12 trip through Oregon. The Buffaloes opened the weekend up with a 3-1 win at Oregon and have a meeting with Oregon State on Sunday.

Colorado (9-2-0, 1-1-0 Pac-12) put together a solid second half to put away the Ducks in Eugene on Thursday night. Shyra James opened the night with her ninth goal of the season and Ally Clark and Emerson Layne scored within 61 seconds of each other in the second half to secure the team's first Pac-12 win.

The Buffs put 10 shots on net against the Ducks, marking the most on-target in a Pac-12 contest since the 2021 season. CU had 22 shots and outshot Oregon by 12 on the night. Colorado now has five games this season with 20 shots or more.

"We need to build off our momentum from the second half on Thursday," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "I thought we played well in the second half and had some really good moments. Oregon State presents a whole new challenge. They had a good result on Thursday against a very strong Utah team. They [OSU] has one of the top strikers in the league in McKenna Martinez so we'll have to deal with her. We're going to have to be opportunistic going forward. It's another challenge on the road, but we're excited to get after it tomorrow."

Clark's game-winning goal came off a free-kick in the 62nd minute, marking the third of the year scored from a free-kick opportunity for the Buffs. CU now has scored 11 of its 23 goals this season off of set pieces. Layne became the team's 12th different goal scorer this season.

"It was good to get three goals from three different players [against Oregon]," Sanchez continued. "We're going to need that kind of contribution from everybody going forward. We can't be predictable in what we're doing. Like I told the team, goals come in various ways and it doesn't matter how you get them as long as you get them. We had a good second half on Thursday and we need to be even better tomorrow."

Oregon State (3-3-4, 0-1-1 Pac-12) is in search of its first conference win, coming off a 2-2 draw against Utah on Thursday. Utah scored two late second-half goals to take a 2-1 lead, but Martinez put away the equalizer in the 82nd minute to earn the draw. Martinez is fifth in the country in shots per game (5.00) and 11th in the NCAA in shots on goal per game (2.20) and has scored four of OSU's 10 goals this season.

Sunday's kickoff is set for 2 p.m. MT. The match will be streamed online at CUBuffs.com/WatchSoc.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Colorado used two unanswered goals from Shyra James and Emerson Layne in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Oregon State on Sunday.

Oregon State (3-4-4, 0-2-1 Pac-12) opened things up with a goal in the 4th minute of the match, but Colorado kept its composure and was able to take the lead before halftime. James extended her scoring streak to six games while Layne recorded a goal in each game against the Oregon schools.

"I think the group has a strong mentality and also has very good leadership," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "When you get on the road, things are going to happen. For example, giving up that early goal and how you respond to it. I thought today we responded very well."

Sunday's win completed the sweep of the schools in the team's final conference trip through the state. The victory marked CU's first win in Corvallis since the 2018 season. The Buffs have now won three matches in a row over the Beavers. It was also Colorado's fourth road win of the season, marking the most since 2018 (5).

"It's tough to get results on the road and it was a great result for the Buffs," Sanchez added.

Both teams were even in shots with seven a side in the first half. OSU finished with a slight edge in shots on the day, 14-13. The big guns for both teams led the way with McKenna Martinez getting credit for seven shots for OSU, while James led the Buffs with six.

"We needed to do a better job of punishing them [Oregon State] when they got numbers forward and we didn't do that, but defensively we did a very good job in the second half," Sanchez noted.

Colorado will head back home this week to take on Stanford on Thursday night, followed up with California on Sunday afternoon. The Buffs will look to bounce back after losing their last match in Boulder to No. 5 ranked UCLA.

"Well it's a disappointing start obviously but a great response from the squad. The first goal when Shyra buried it really gave us momentum and we kept that momentum going forward."

Senior Shyra James
On her play

"We [the team] have a really good connection with everyone, especially all the starters. And yeah, I'm going after that, my own [consecutive goal scoring] record [10 games]. So hopefully I will surpass it."

Notes
Sunday's win was the 10th of the season, marking the most since 12-8-2 in 2019…Layne has now scored in two straight matches…Babcock-Chi's assist was her first of the season…Coach Sanchez recorded career win No. 130 at CU…James now has 35 career goals and is just four shy of tying Taylor Kornieck for second on CU's career goals list…She now has 76 career points and trails Katie Griffin (78) for 4th all-time.
