CU Soccer (10-3-4 overall, 4-2-4 in conference play) is the 1st CU sport to finish off its regular season for this academic year as they're scheduled to host the Utah Utes (8-5-4, 5-3-2) Friday (tomorrow) night. Of course, being the last regular season home match, it will be an emotional one as 9 CU players will be recognized and celebrated as part of Senior Day festivities. (The 9 being honored are named in the cubuffs.com preview article I plan on linking to and quoting right after this post.)

Note - As of yesterday, the NCAA's official RPI ratings (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d1/ncaa-womens-soccer-rpi ) has CU at #54 and Utah at #80.

In the Big 12 standings (https://big12sports.com/standings.aspx?path=soc), the Buffs are in a 3 way tie for 7th place with 13 points. The Utes are 1 point ahead of the Buffs, so a CU win tomorrow would guarantee they'd move up at least one spot. (The 4th place team is 4 points ahead of CU, so there is no mathematical chance anymore they get a 1st round bye at the Big 12 tournament which begins next Wednesday in KC.) Depending on how the final match goes for CU and the teams around them, looks like the highest they can finish is 5th and the lowest is 9th.

As with the other home matches so far this season, looks like a video stream for this week's match will be available for those with a premium ($) ESPN+ subscription. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

(For those interested, looks like the team will be making individual posts in both Instagram and Twitter (I assume all today) recognizing those being celebrated on Senior Day. There is also more on each senior in the preview article that I didn't quote below.)

Buffs Set for Senior Day Showdown with Utah

Nine CU players set for final game at Prentup Field

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
Colorado closes its regular season with a Friday night matchup against its cross-mountain rival Utah at Prentup Field on Friday (7 p.m. MT/ESPN+).

The Buffaloes (10-3-4, 4-2-4 Big 12) will look to get back on track on Senior Night, honoring nine players who will be playing in their final regular season home game. Colorado will honor Lindsey Smith, Laura Gouvin, Lola Stanley,Rachel Rosen, Jenny Beyer, Michaela Rosenbaum, Phoenix Dawn Miranda, Shyra James and Hannah Duguid.

"What a fantastic group of talented women," head coach Danny Sanchez acknowledged. "They have all represented our program and university with class on and off the field. Each of them has taken a different route to Colorado, and we are fortunate that they selected us. I know each of them will be very successful in wherever life takes them next year and in the future."

Out of the departing group, five players have spent their entire four- or five-year careers as Buffs. James and Rosen returned this season for a fifth season, while Miranda, Beyer and Duguid are wrapping up their fourth season at CU.

"What came into my decision to return was to make a legacy here and just to have another year with my team," James noted.

Rosen's choice to return was similarly based on the team, saying she wanted to play another year on "the best campus with the best team."

And, this week's TWICS -

No score around 6 minutes into the match. (Great to see James able to start tonight.)

more of the same, CU is not dangerous in the final third. If Utah gets 1 the game is over. How did this team score 2 goals against UNC

What are the Vegas odds CU does not score another goal the rest of the season. the only thing they seem to do is try and get the ball in front of the net and hope they score an ugly goal. Unlike hockey it does not work

0-0 draw. Buffs had a flurry in front of goal (hockey reference) in the final two minutes, but there was too much traffic in front.

CU will rematch with Utah in the first round of the tourney next week. Can they score a goal is my biggest question

On a crisp night with a large crowd on hand the Buffs tied Utah 0-0. It was the third nil-nil conference draw this season. The result means the Buffs playing Utah again in the first round of the Big XII tourney Wednesday afternoon in Kansas City.

In the first half Utah looked the more likely team to score as they were able to get some quality chances by transitioning quickly when CU was turned over. Fortunately for the Buffs, most of the shots were easily saved.

Lack of the ability to finish was the reason why the match ended in a goalless draw. Both sides had some solid opportunities which were wasted with inaccurate shots. CU found more chances in the second half including a flurry of shots in the box in the final two minutes off of a series of corners.

The home crowd bid farewell to nine Buffs who will be finishing their time with the program:

  • Lindsey Smith
  • Laura Gouvin*
  • Lola Stanley
  • Racheal Rosen*
  • Jenny Beyer
  • Michael Rosenbaum*
  • Phoenix Dawn Miranda*
  • Shyra James*
  • Hannah Duguid

* Starter for all/much of the season (James missed games/starts due to injury)
