Leyba Earns Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Buffs Back at Home

CU Takes on New Mexico State on Thursday

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

IRVING, Texas –
Colorado forward Hope Leyba helped the Buffaloes' offense explode for 15 goals last week and improve to 3-0-1 in the young season, on her way to earning Co-Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

The honor is the first weekly award of the junior's career.

Leyba becomes the first CU field player to earn a Big 12 weekly honor since Annie Brunner's Newcomer of the Week award on Nov. 2, 2010. Teammate Jordan Nytes earned five Goalkeeper of the Year honors last season. Gianna DeSaverio picked up the Buffs' last Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 30, 2008.

The Phoenix, Ariz., native has scored in all four matches to start the year. She put in five goals in Colorado's two games last week against Fordham and UNC Greensboro. Her scoring streak continued on Thursday when she recorded just the eighth hat trick in CU history in the Buffs' 7-1 win. Leyba added two more goals in Sunday's 8-0 win over UNC Greensboro.

Leyba ranks 2nd in the NCAA in points per game (3.50) and goals per game (1.75). Her seven goals and 14 points this season are currently tied for the most in the NCAA.

She split the honor with TCU's Seven Castain, who scored two goals in TCU's lone match.

The award is Colorado's 37th Big 12 honor and the ninth offensive honor. CU rejoined the conference in the 2024 season.

Buffs Take on New Mexico State

BOULDER –
Colorado continues its six-game homestand to start the season on Thursday when it takes on New Mexico State (7 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

It will be the first meeting between the two schools.

The Buffs have been off to a scorching hot start to the season, leading the NCAA with 20 goals through the first four games. The team's 20 goals are the most through four games to start a season in program history.

Colorado tied the second-most goals scored against Fordham (7) and then tied the program record three days later against UNCG (8), totaling 15 goals in the last 180 minutes. Leyba notched five of the team's 15 last week and has scored seven in the first four games, the most by any CU player to start a season.

The scoring onslaught doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon, and the next goal for CU will be the program's 900th all-time. Currently, the Buffs are on pace for 95 goals this season. While that number surely won't hold, the Buffs' record of 47 goals in 2018 could very much be in jeopardy.

15 different players have found the scoresheet for Colorado this season. Leyba leads the nation with her 14 points, while Jace Holley is right on her heels with 13 (5 G, 3 A). CU had 17 different players record points for the entire 2024 season.

Not to be outdone, goalkeeper Jordan Nytes continued to make her mark in the CU record books. She recorded her 28th career win and posted her 20th shutout at CU on Sunday against UNCG.

New Mexico State (1-3-0) has dropped its last two matches at No. 5 USC and Arizona. The Aggies have allowed eight goals against this season.

And, this week's soccer show -

Per a social media post from about a half hour ago, the start to the match is now scheduled for 7:15 (due to a weather delay).

And the Buffs go up 1-0 EARLY as Layne makes a nice run down the left side and then finds Holley near the far post who heads it home in the 4th minute.
(Per the announcer, it's the 900th goal in CU program history.)

And it's 2-0 in the 11th minute after a nice centering pass from Whiteaker to the right post forces the goalie to go after it and she gets out of position. However, It's Holley who is able to touch the ball 1st, and she pokes it towards H. Leyba at the left post and she easily pokes it home as she keeps her goal scoring streak going, with at least 1 goal in all 5 of CU's matches in 2025.

And H. Leyba earns the brace to put the Buffs up 3-0 in the 29th minute.

She gets a nice leading pass from ??? , then out muscles a defender and then is able to poke it past the charging goalie to then knock it home to an open net.

The Buffs lost the shutout in the 90th minute off a corner kick they can't clear, but then get the 3 goal lead back in the final 10 seconds as H. Leyba earns a penalty in the box and Priest knocks the PK in for a comfortable 4-1 win.

Way to go Buffs!

was not the buffs best game imo especially in the the second half. very physical game with a bunch of shirt grabbing. I wonder if the rain and slick grass really hurt them in how they play

Early Strikes Lift Buffs Past Aggies

Three first-half goals from CU Helped secure the win

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER, Colo. –
Colorado continued its early-season scoring onslaught on Thursday night at Prentup Field, finding the back of the net four more times in the Buffaloes' 4-1 win over New Mexico State.

Colorado (4-0-1) received early contributions from the ever-growing dominant pair of Jace Holley and Hope Leyba, with Ava Priest adding a late conversion from the penalty spot to build on the Buffs' NCAA-leading 24 goals this season. Holley's opening goal marked the 900th in program history.

The Buffs outshot New Mexico State (1-4-0) 15-12 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. CU also held a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. Colorado goalkeeper Jordan Nytes was 49 seconds from recording her second consecutive shutout, but NMSU squandered the clean sheet in the final minute.

"We started well," head coach Danny Sanchez explained after the win. "The first 28 minutes was some good soccer—three great goals. Good energy, good fight. To be honest, I think we lost the plot after that. Credit New Mexico State. They could have mailed it in. They could have started feeling sorry for themselves, but they kept battling. I thought the second half, they played very well. Jordi made a couple of saves in the first half; it easily could have been a 2-1 or 1-1 game at halftime. I think we got complacent, and the second half was not the quality we're looking for."

Leyba and Holley have far surpassed their offensive numbers from last season. Leyba notched goals eight and nine of the season on Thursday, having scored eight goals total in the 2024 campaign. Holley picked up her sixth goal of the season, two better than her scoring output as a freshman. The forward pair has combined for 34 total points in CU's first five games.

"It's built over the years," Leyba noted of the chemistry that's formed at the top of the formation. "We've practiced every single day, and it's finally started to come together. It's really good and I'm glad it's happening."
...

Colorado closes out the six-game homestand with a meeting against Wyoming on Sunday (1 p.m. MT).

Notes
Colorado's 24 goals in five games is the best start to a season in program history, besting the team's 21 goals in the first five games of the 2021 season…Leyba has scored in all five games to start the season…Her seven goals in five games match Shyra James' start to the 2022 season… Colorado's 24 goals are equal to or better than eight non-COVID season goal totals…The Buffs are seven goals off of last season's total of 31…CU is 61-0-1 when scoring three or more goals under Coach Sanchez…Holley and Jordan Whiteaker each recorded their team-leading fourth assists of the season.

Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez

On the team's versatility – "We have a small roster and we always do. We have to have players who can play in different lines and in different spots. I think we're still finding ourselves, you know, we're going to be in more games like the second half, where it starts to get a little frustrating. Every trip down isn't a goal. We have to back, but I think we do have players that are versatile, that can play in different lines, and we're going to need them as the season goes."

On the final minute – "I think with a minute to go, we finally played with some urgency in the second half. I don't think it's a coincidence that they get a goal and deserved. They were creating chances, but all of a sudden we go down and within 45 seconds we have a penalty kick. It's a little too coincidental and the team knows it. But big picture, we're very pleased to get the win with a little bit of a weather delay and we look forward to Wyoming on Sunday."

Box score - https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-soccer/stats/2025/new-mexico-state/boxscore/17498

On a cool night at Prentup the Buffs fended off a determined New Mexico State side that refused to capitulate despite being down 0-3 at the half. It was the Aggies who fired the first salvo in the match by working the ball off the kickoff to find an open player to the left of the goal with the shot forcing Jordan Nytes to deflect the ball over the bar.

CU’s showed their propensity for scoring early when Emerson Layne was able to get down the left side on a run and then hit a left footed cross to a charging Jace Holley who somehow beat the defender to the ball and buried the header. This was in the third minute.

Jace Holley picked up another assist (her 4th of the season when she got a foot on a flighted free kick from Jordan Whiteaker and tapped it across the goal for a tap-in by Hope Leyba (11’). Of course Hope wasn’t done yet as in the 29’ she outworked a defender for the ball on the right side, cut towards the six yard box, tapped it by the keeper and rolled in the goal between two defenders. She now has nine goals on the season.

Going into the half, it looked like the Buffs would once again roll to an easy win. After the Aggies’ initial foray, the only shots they were getting were from distance. However, NM State didn’t quit and when the Buffs made wholesale substitutions in the second half they gained steam. And unlike the previous couple of matches the Buffs weren’t scoring at will despite creating some quality chances. Props to the Aggies’ keeper, Valerie Guha who made two point blank saves in a row on Mallory Allen. She finished with six saves. CU Jordan Nytes had five saves on the night.

NM State continued to create chances and Danny Sanchez put in the starters which led to the 90’ minute craziness where the Aggies scored from a scramble off a corner kick which was quickly followed by Hope Leyba being fouled in the box at the other end - Ava Priest coveted the PK. The final score was 4-1.

The pitch was wet, but didn’t appear to be saturated with water except at one corner where players taking the kick were trying to sweep water away with their boots. It was clear during the match, the start was delayed about ten minutes following showers.

Highlights

NM State is a solid team who has lost to three P5 sides thus far this season, including an 0-4 loss to #5 USC and a 0-2 loss at home to Arizona.

CU is at home to Wyoming on Sunday afternoon.

It seems like a number of games recently have been physical. There have been a lot of yellow cards and slide tackles.

It wasn't raining during the match, but the pitch was slick.

yeah. It rained pretty good right before the match. I thought this one was a little more physical. I think having Hope and Emerson who are very physical players playing the other teams feel like they have to be very physical against CU.

Buffs Scoring at Record Pace

The CU offense has been dominant early on this season

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER, Colo. –
Colorado soccer opened the season with a draw against then No. 12 Michigan State, but has since won four straight as it welcomes in Wyoming to cap off a six-game homestand on Sunday (1 p.m., ESPN+).

The Buffaloes' 1-1 draw against the Spartans has been the outlier so far for head coach Danny Sanchez's squad. Colorado has scored 23 goals over its last four matches and leads the NCAA so far this season with its 24 total goals.

Colorado totaled a combined 15 goals against Fordham and UNC Greensboro. The 15 goals in back-to-back games were the most in program history. Seven different Buffs contributed to the scoring output, led by five goals from junior Hope Leyba.

Leyba, the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, currently leads the NCAA with her nine goals and 18 points. Jace Holley isn't far behind her, ranking third in the NCAA in goals (6) and second in points (16).

"It comes in stretches," Sanchez explained after the UNCG match. "When you're in the stretch, you need to enjoy it. At the end of the day, they were good goals."

Colorado spent the first two games in a 4-4-2 formation, with Leyba and Holley up top. The forward duo began to click in CU's 4-1 win over Air Force. Holley scored her first career brace, and Leyba added her second of the season.

Sanchez switched up his tactics, shifting to a 4-3-3 against Fordham, and the Buffs responded with seven goals, including a hat trick from Leyba and another brace from Emerson Layne. The scoring continued in bunches against UNCG, matching the program record with eight goals and setting a team record with 11 assists.

"I think we're playing super well together," Layne noted. "Our movement is really good. I think the play out of the back sets us up for success. I feel like we've been finishing the way that we need to. There are no opportunities that we really have been missing."

Colorado is just seven goals shy of matching last season's scoring output of 31, with 14 regular-season matches remaining. In comparison, CU had recorded 13 goals thru their first five games last season, and the Arkansas Razorbacks led the nation with 23 total goals before the start of September.

The Buffs' pace will slow down as the season progresses, but the team is currently scoring 4.8 goals per game, putting them on track to score 91 goals this season. Colorado's top effort over a full season was 47 goals scored in 2018.

Part of the key to CU's offensive onslaught has been starting early. Colorado has had eight goals scored inside the first 20 minutes so far this season.

"I think scoring early always helps us," Leyba added. "If we start with momentum, then we're going to score no matter what. If we are intense, nobody can match that."

The Buffs and Cowgirls met last season, with Shyra James recording a hat trick in CU's 5-1 win at Prentup Field. Colorado has 26 all-time goals in 13 matches against Wyoming, owning a +17-goal differential.

Brad Thompson will be on the call all season long on ESPN+.

The Buffs are going to have to pay catch-up as Wyoming scored IMMEDIATELY (25 second in) to start the match.

The Buffs have had most of the decent chances so far, but none of the finishes have been quite good enough. 0-1 is the score at the half.

Kotschau is the beneficiary of a Nytes long ball that bounces around the box and she kicks it home as the Buffs go up 2-1 in the 82nd minute. (Edit - Assist on this goal to Layne.)

Phew - seemed to me the team went WAY too far into their shells after getting the lead, but they survive a wide open shot in the last minute that thankfully went right to Nytes and CU stays undefeated and with only one tie as they come from behind and defeat the Cowgirls 2-1.

Way to go Buffs!

that was close. I had a feeling the lack of concentration would hurt the buffs some time this year and it did on that first goal. great play by Wyo but buffs were not quite in the game yet it seemed. It allowed Wyo to play that fall back and build a wall defense. Somebody who watches more soccer can tell me. It seems the last two games have been very physical and the refs don't call things. Is that the new norm, the refs that ref in this area, bad refs or me not seeing what is really happening.

Colorado Completes Comeback for 300th Win

The Buffaloes remain unbeaten on the season

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications
BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado Buffaloes faced their first bit of adversity on the season, falling behind early to Wyoming in the team's 2-1 come-from-behind win over Wyoming Sunday at Prentup Field.

Colorado (5-0-1) trailed for the first time all season when it conceded a goal 25 seconds into the match. The Buffs played from behind into the second half, needing a pair of goals from Jace Holley and Reagan Kotschau to finish the Buffs' opening homestand unbeaten.

"It wasn't the start we were looking for," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed after the win. "Credit to Wyoming. They came out and we needed to expect this [kind of play] and I don't think we were ready. After that, we played pretty well. We just didn't create enough in the first half.

"We hadn't been losing all year, so facing a little adversity is ok. I'm proud of how we came back and at the end of the day, sometimes every shot goes in, sometimes you have to scrap out a 2-1 win, and that's what happened today."

Sunday's win checked off two different milestones. It was the program's 300th all-time victory and the 150th for Sanchez in his 14th season at CU.

"300 wins says we're a top program and that we've been a top program for a long time," Sanchez noted. "A lot of credit to Austin Daniels, rest in peace. Then obviously Bill Hempen, who won a lot of those games as well. We've had a lot of stability. This is a place where people want to come and stay. I'm in that boat as well. I just feel fortunate to be here, fortunate to coach this team this long, and couldn't be more excited about the future."

Holley continued her hot start, picking up her seventh goal of the season to tie the match. The goal also brought her back to even with teammate Hope Leyba for the team lead in points with 18. Sunday's match brought an end to Leyba's goal-scoring streak. The NCAA leader in goals finished with three shots but was held off the scoresheet for the first time.

Jordan Nytes rebounded nicely after Wyoming's first shot found the back of the net. She blanked the Cowgirls the rest of the way, making four saves.
...

Colorado didn't wait much longer, finally punching one through in the 60th minute with Holley saving the ball off the end line and then dribbling in and scooping a left-footed shot into the far side of the net, evening the game at 1-1.

"We were getting numbers forward, getting wide," Sanchez said of his team's second-half adjustments. "We were creating lots of corners and deep throw-ins and so forth. We just played with a little more urgency. The first goal of the game, there's no urgency. Now we're down 25 seconds into the game. Now you're chasing the game. However, if you're going to go down, that's the time to go down. But credit Wyoming. I thought they played very well."

Colorado kept on the gas in the final 30 minutes and converted the game-winner in the 82nd minute off another scramble in front of the Wyoming net. Nytes served a free kick from the Colorado end of the field deep into the Wyoming box and Emerson Layne was able to get a touch on the ball before Kotschau could deliver it home for the 2-1 lead.

Wyoming had a chance on net in the final minute, but Nytes was in position to cap off the victory.

The Buffs head out on the road for the first time this season, traveling up north to Madison, Wisc., to take on the No. 21 Badgers.

The Wyoming soccer team is staying at our hotel. I gave them the evil eye when they were getting ready to leave for the game. Apparently it was effective.

2-1 (Holley, 60’; Kotschau, 82’ Layne)

For the first time this season the Buffs faced a deficit having conceded a goal to Wyoming in just 25 seconds. It took a long time, but with some tactical adjustments in the second half they were able to ratchet up the pressure on Wyoming's back line.

Wyoming scored quickly by taking the opening kick, getting the ball to Jennah Wanner the left side who then completely twisted CU’s Caley Swierenga to get down the left side with no pressure. Wanner than simply hit the ball across the six yard box where Alyssa Glover had an easy finish.

With the lead, the Cowgirls were able to stymie the Buffs attack by getting two defenders on any CU forward with the ball in the attacking half. The reaction to this was to hit long hopeful balls over the top or settle for long shots outside the box.

The second half saw the Buffs make a tactical change by putting an extra player up top which effectively put them in a 4-2-4 rather than the 4-3-3 they started the game with. Ava Priest became the fourth forward and with this change CU was able to put more pressure on the ball higher up the pitch. Wyoming began to turn the ball over more frequently which led to more scoring opportunities for CU.

Jace Holley - who like Hope Leyba has been very good at finishing this season - got on the end of an attempted clearance on the end line and was able to blast the ball over the keeper with her left foot from a tight angle (60’).

Reagan Kotschau netted the game winner when she got on the end of a tap from Emmerson Layne in the box off a long ball from Jordan Nytes. It was the right place at the right time.

The Cowgirls did have a chance in the dying minutes, but failed to convert. Kudos to them for executing a game plan that made the Buffs uncomfortable. Wyoming was generally on the front foot and not intimidated while the Buffs had trouble matching their passion.

There was one notable change to the CU starting lineup with senior Greer Maguire starting at centerback in place of Lilian Zamorano. Because the match was tight throughout, the starters were getting a lot more minutes than they were in the previous five matches. This was the first time this season where Hope Leyba didn’t score - she has nine total goals in six games.

This was win #300 in program history.

Highlights

CU is at Wisconsin next Sunday for their only game of the weekend and their first road game of the season.
