SOCCER (5-0-1) finally hits the road for a couple stern tests after a nice 6 match homestand to start the season. 1st off is a trip to the midwest to face off this Sunday afternoon with the Wisconsin Badgers (4-1-0). Then, it's back to Boulder for a few days before they make the short trip southeast to meet the Denver Pioneers (DU; 2-0-3) Thursday evening.

Not that it means much of anything for this season, but in the final RPI ratings for last (2024) season (dated 12/9/24, https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d1/ncaa-womens-soccer-rpi ), CU ended up at #50, while Wisconsin was #25 and DU #87.

Personally, a little bummed that I won't be able to watch streams for either match, as they require premium subscriptions to the Big 10+ and Summit League services. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Buffs Set for First Road Test

Colorado takes on Wisconsin on Sunday

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

MADISON, Wis. –
After six matches at home to start 2025, the Colorado Buffaloes are ready for their first road matchup of the season. Head coach Danny Sanchez and Co. will head to Big 10 Country to take on Wisconsin (11 a.m. MT).

Colorado (5-0-1) enjoyed its six-match start at Prentup Field, jumping into the national spotlight with 26 goals and a +21 goal differential, both top-5 nationally. Colorado also ranks second in total assists (26) and third in total points (78).

Now it's time to take the show on the road.

"We've had a great stretch at home," Sanchez expressed. "I think it's time to get on the road. Less distractions. We can really kind of bond again as a team. We're excited to get to Wisconsin."

Wisconsin (5-1-0) is coming off a 3-0 win over Northern Illinois and has allowed just three goals against this season. The Badgers pose a good test for the Buffaloes, playing their second NCAA Tournament team from the 2024 field.

"There's a lot of parity in women's soccer," Sanchez added. "I think that to go the road, face a team that was a Sweet 16 team last year, and will be a tournament team again this year, is a great opportunity for us."

Hope Leyba and Jace Holley both lead the charge for the Buffs, ranking third in the NCAA in total points with 18 apiece. All the team's offensive success seems like a luxury at the moment, but CU knows how hard it can be to come by goals at any given moment. The Buffs had just one goal in the last five regular-season games of 2024 and were shutout in the final four regular-season matches.

"There are games, and probably Sunday, where we're not going to get as many opportunities as we've been getting," Sanchez noted. "Having said that, obviously, we have quality players that we have a lot of confidence in to hopefully keep the momentum going in the attack."

Sunday's game will be streamed online on the Big 10 + Network.

About 2 hours until the opening kick of the 1st road match of the season.

Pretty hard to evaluate or guess soccer action based on stats, but looks like the 1st half was pretty even, with the Buffs holding small advantages in shots (3 to 2) and corners (4-2), and teams tied at 1 for shots on goal.

It's tied at 0 after 45 minutes.

Bragging Rights up for Grabs

Colorado heads down to Denver on Thursday

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER —
The Denver Darby gets set for its latest edition Thursday night when the Colorado Buffaloes make the short drive down I-25 to take on the Denver Pioneers (7 p.m. MT). It will mark the 31st meeting between the two schools, dating back to 1997.

Colorado (5-1-1) has had all the recent success in the series, winning the last 13 matches against the Pioneers. In the 13 wins, all but four have been one-goal results. CU's 13 straight wins are the longest active winning streak against an opponent. The last time CU fell to DU was a 3-0 result at Denver on Sept. 15, 2013.

"Like every year, DU and us tend to close out non-conference play against each other in arguably the biggest non-conference game for both of us," head coach Danny Sanchez noted. "We're excited to get down to Denver and test ourselves against a team that's been playing very well. They played a very competitive non-conference schedule, and I expect a great match tomorrow."

The Buffs are coming off their first setback of the season last Sunday at Wisconsin. CU battled but couldn't find the back of the net for the first time this season in the 1-0 loss to the Badgers. Colorado put nine shot attempts towards the net against the Badgers, with five landing on target. Colorado's "Big 3" of Emerson Layne, Jace Holley and Hope Leyba each finished with two shots.

While it's the Buffs' first time dealing with a loss this season, the team has responded well after losses, going 2-0-2 after a loss last season.

"We've had a great start to non-conference play," Sanchez added. "So one game doesn't define you. I thought we played well in long spurts against Wisconsin on Sunday; we just didn't get the result. It is good to get right back into it and get right back into it against the local rival, I think, adds a little bit extra of anticipation to the match."

The Buffs own a 21-8-1 record against Denver. CU's 21 wins are the most against any CU opponent.

"We just have to turn the page and get ready for tomorrow," Sanchez continued.

The match will be streamed on the Summit League Network.

want to see better offense. Last several games the offense has been lacking. Sanchez made DU sound like an all world team but they are not. I saw the AFA game and thought AFA was better than DU and all the big teams DU played they lost. Need to get a good win tonight. Also hate seeing CSU rated and CU not especially with the CSU schedule.

Tonight's match has begun, and CU got on the board early, in the 4th minute, on a Holley goal, with an assist to Layne. And, as I was typing this, CU gets its 2nd on a goal by frosh Zacarias (her 1st as a collegian) in the 8th minute.

Still 2-0 in the 9th minute.

Buff starters were

nice start. wish I could watch. Wish the summit league thing had a pay per view option and not have to buy a sub to watch 1 game

And the final was 2-0.
(Although they didn't score in the 2nd, looks from the stats that CU continued to be aggressive, and ended up with big advantages in every offensive category (20-3 in shots, 7-1 in shots on goal and 9-1 in corners).

Way to go Buffs!

Again, nice win. Now on to conference play!

Buffs Continue Dominance over Denver

Colorado extends winning streak over local rivals

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

DENVER —
Colorado soccer extended its winning streak in the Denver Derby to 14 consecutive on Thursday night, besting the Denver Pioneers 2-0 at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

Colorado (6-1-1) scored both goals in the first half, on its first two shots on goal, securing the win with a strong defensive performance that limited Denver to just three shots on goal. The victory was highlighted with a shutout from the Colorado goalkeeper, Jordan Nytes, who made one save to preserve her 31st win and 21st clean sheet at Colorado.

"Great performance from the Buffs tonight," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed in the win. "Jace [Holley] gets the early goal, and Vivi [Zacarias] had an absolute world-class strike to make it 2-0. I thought after that, we lost our way a little bit, and Denver was getting forward. We changed our tactics a little bit towards the end of the first half, and in the second half, it was just a professional approach to the match. We managed the game well and probably got unlucky not to get a third [goal] and really kept Denver at bay."

Jace Holley scored the opener and eventual game-winning goal for her eighth of the season. Vivi Zacarias followed with the Buffs' second goal, marking her first collegiate tally. Both goals came in the first 10 minutes on consecutive shots on goal, after not finding the back of the net last time out against Wisconsin.

"I think it was more of a statement, not even to the people watching, but more to us, because we couldn't get those goals in Wisconsin," Zacarias said of the bounce back. "It was like, 'Ok, we're the team that we know can score and that can attack,' and we know that we're great offensively. I think it gave us more confidence to keep going and keep pushing and not give up after the first 10, and after those goals we didn't turn off."

The win was Colorado's 22nd of the series, in 31 matches played since 1997.

"It did live up to it," Zacarias said about the rivalry. "The veterans on our team were telling me this is a big game, so I was really happy and excited to be a part of it, and it lived up to everything."

How it Happened
...

Thursday served as the final non-conference game for the Buffaloes before they move on to conference play.

"We're pleased with the [overall] performance," Sanchez added. "We wanted momentum going into Big 12 play and to beat our local rival at their place, in front of a great crowd. It gives us a lot of confidence, and now it's all about Kansas State next Thursday."

Up Next
Looking ahead, the Buffs will host Kansas State on September 18 at 7 p.m. at Prentup Field.

Box score - https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-soccer/stats/2025/denver/boxscore/17501

The Buffs finished their non-conference schedule on the road with matches at Wisconsin on Sept. 7 and Denver on Sept. 11. Wisconsin most likely will be one of the better teams on the Buffs schedule this season so an 0-1 loss in Madison isn’t a terrible result. In this match CU conceded in the 73rd minute off a rebound. The stats were even in this match with teams having about the same number of shots on goal.

Thursday night CU got back to a theme that has been successful for them this season where they scored early and forced the Pioneers to chase the match, winning 2-0. Jace Holley put in her eighth of the season in the fourth minute when the ball got deflected to her. She has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Scoring for the first time this season was freshman midfielder Vivi Zacarias in the eighth minute when she scooped a clearance just outside of the box, took a touch and then buried the ball with her left foot.

From this point on the Buffs managed the game well with DU getting only one shot on goal. CU had seven total with nine corners to one for DU. This was the 14th consecutive win v DU for the Buffs.

CU v DU Highlights

CU ends the non-conference portion of the schedule 6-1-1, winning all the matches that they would have been favorites in while being competitive in the other two (Michigan State and Wisconsin). The starting forwards (Hope Leyba, Emerson Layne and Jace Holley) have done the bulk of the scoring for the team with a combined total of 20 of the team’s 28 goals and nine assists. Both Leyba and Holley are having breakout seasons having scored more goals this season than they did in 22 matches last year.

College players (excluding goalies) rarely play the full 90 minutes of a match. However, to compare scoring rates from player to player calculating goals per 90 minutes helps to give a sense of how often an individual scores. Thus far, Hope Leyba is scoring 1.47 goals per 90’, while Jace Holley is right with her at 1.43.

Scoring early has been a strength of this team and they have only been behind twice thus far (v Wyoming, @ Wisconsin). The only times this season they have scored fewer than two goals are against Michigan State and Wisconsin - both look like they will make the NCAA tourney. And Wyoming is going to help the Buffs in the RPI having defeated Georgia 1-0 in Athens.

As a team, defending hasn’t been a strength with only two shutouts in eight games. Yes, they haven't yielded more than one goal in a match, but they aren’t able to completely shut down even weak opponents. This isn’t a knock on Jordan Nytes - who is a top notch keeper - it’s what goes on in front of her that’s an issue.

Last season CU’s scoring abandoned them in Big XII play. Given what they have done so far, that seems less likely this season. CU’s solo match next week to start conference play is home to Kansas State Thursday night..
