Matches Thread- SOCCER hosts Colorado College (Thursday, 8/24/23, 7:00 PM MT) & #14 Michigan State (Sunday, Noon MT)

Buff soccer (1-1-0) hope to bounce back quickly from last Sunday's loss as they host the Colorado College (CC) Tigers (0-1-1) this Thursday evening, followed up with a noon matinee Sunday vs. the #17 #14 ranked Michigan State Spartans (2-0-0 ).

(The Tigers started the season with a 1-3 loss to Louisiana Tech, but then partially bounced back with a 2-2 tie after facing the DU Pioneers. Michigan State is 2-0 after 1-0 and 3-1 victories at home over Cincinnati and Bowling Green, respectively.)

Not that last season means much of anything anymore, but just to maybe get a ROUGH idea on the competition, CU ended up #69 in the last RPI rating in 2022, while CC was #175 and Michigan State #16. (The Spartans were the Big 10 regular season champions and then made it to the conference tourney final, where they lost to Penn State. They then lost to #9 TCU in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney, and ended the season as the #15 ranked team in NCAA D1.)

Thursday's match is scheduled to be shown on a Pac 12 Insider stream, while Sunday's is scheduled to be shown on the Pac 12 Networks. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

BOULDER—Colorado soccer continues with a pair of matches at Prentup Field this week. The Buffs return to action against in-state rival Colorado College on Thursday (7 p.m. MT) and finish the weekend out with No. 14 Michigan State.

CU split its opening weekend, earning a 3-0 result against Northern Colorado to open the year. The Buffs had a solid showing last Sunday against Marquette but suffered a 1-0 setback against the Golden Eagles.

Colorado owns a 10-2-1 record against the Tigers. The Buffs have won the last four matches and are unbeaten in the last 11 contests (10-0-1). Shyra James picked up the game-winner in the last meeting in 2021, which proved to be CU's opener in Denver. She headed the ball into the net in the 98th minute with Jayden Newkirk and Rachel Rosen each assisting on the effort.

Thursday's game will be streamed online at CUBuffs.com/WatchSoc.

The Buffs got one more goal and its 2-0 heading into the half. (It's been a lopsided half, with the Buffs leading 19-2 in shots, 9-0 in shots on goal and 6-0 in corners.)

The 2nd half is much more even and neither team scores, so CU ends with another W, by a 2-0 score.

really like the Lebya sisters. I think Hope is are most effective forward. She is a little raw but she creates so many scoring chances. The first goal was because of her slide tackle. Nice win, I guess. Have to make some big time strides for sunday as MSU beat UNC 7-0 in greeley. CC goalie made some nice saves.

BOULDER—The Colorado Buffaloes outlasted Mother Nature and the Colorado College Tigers in the bounce-back win on Thursday night. The Buffs got two first-half goals and weathered a lightning delay on the way to their second win of the season under the lights at Prentup Field.

Colorado (2-1-0) dominated the night, putting 26 shots on the board. It was the most shots fired by CU since its 38 against Texas A&M Commerce in last season's 6-0 win. The Buffs landed 12 shots on target, also marking the most since 15 in the same match.

Both tallies for the Buffs came from new faces. Graduate transfer Ally Clark got the scoring started with her ninth career goal, but first in the Black & Gold. Freshman Faith Lebya added some insurance with the first of her career.

"We started great," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed. "We had lots of opportunities, hitting a couple of posts early. There was a great individual effort from Hope [Leyba] to keep the ball alive and it's nice for Ally [Clark] to open her CU account. It was the worst time for the weather [delay] to happen for us. I think we were playing extremely well. Having said that, the rest of the first half I thought we played very well as well and got that second goal."

Sanchez made two changes to the starting lineup, slotting in Clark and sophomore Greer Maguire. In all, 21field players got in on the action on Thursday.

"I think it's still early in the season," Sanchez noted. "We want to make sure we give as many players as we can an opportunity to show what they can do. I thought that Ally played really well, especially in the first half. I thought Greer was solid throughout the match. We also realize that Sunday's going to be on another level of pressure and level of play. We're going to have to ramp up our play as we prepare for Michigan State."

Sophomore Jordan Nytes picked up her second shutout in three starts to the season. She wasn't called into action until the second half, making two saves on the night.

CU finished the first half with 19 shots and added seven more in the final 45 minutes. H. Lebya made a run down the near side, cutting to the top of the box in the 77th minute, and had a prime chance on net, but Wallace made a save to keep things a two-goal game.

Upcoming
Colorado will host No. 14 Michigan State on Sunday. The Spartans have been in Colorado all week, opening with a 7-0 win over Northern Colorado.

BOULDER—Only three games into the 2023 season, Ally Clark's decision to journey West seems to be paying off.

Clark graduated from Columbia University in 2023 with remaining eligibility. She started all three seasons for the Lions and accumulated 26 points (8 G, 10 A) in her 39 games. Clark came off the bench for the Buffaloes on opening weekend but was slotted into the starting XI against Colorado College, picking up her first goal in the Black & Gold.

"It was really exciting when I saw that the ball went in," Clark said in the postgame. "I'm just happy to be able to help out my team in any way possible. I was happy to get that first goal under my belt and hopefully, there will be more."

The Jamison, Pa., native, has spent all her life out East. Jamison is right in the heart of the tri-state area adjacent to Trenton, N.J., and just a hop, skip and jump away from Philadelphia. Having spent four years in NYC, Clark knew she wanted to change it up a bit.

"When I was looking where I wanted to play for my fifth year, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone," Clark recalled. "For me, that meant going someplace that I've never lived or visited before. I had never been to Colorado before coming out here. I wanted to switch up the scenery. It's obviously very different from New York City. I wanted that for my last year of soccer and I wanted to be playing at a really high level. I think the Pac-12 is as good as it gets."

The Buffs have 14 new players for 2023, turning over half of the roster from last season. Head coach Danny Sanchez brought in four Division I transfers, including Clark, to help build up some of the roster's veteran presence.

"What we see from her [Clark] is kind of what we thought – she's a very mature soccer player who has great work ethic and is very versatile," Sanchez noted. "She's still finding her place and her role within the group but her training habits, her level of professionalism and her approach to the game are off the charts. We're pleased with what she's brought to the program."

Clark and the Buffs have their biggest test of the young season upcoming, hosting No. 14 Michigan State (3-0-0) on Sunday (Noon/Pac-12 Networks). The Spartans got the better of CU in last season's rain-soaked meeting in East Lansing. MSU has been in Colorado all week, opening the weekend with a 7-0 win over Northern Colorado.

BOULDER—Colorado soccer turned in its best performance of the early season on Sunday. The Buffaloes scored a goal in each half on their way to upsetting No. 14 Michigan State, 2-0, in front of a crowd of 1,156 at Prentup Field.

The win was CU's first against a ranked opponent since topping No. 17 Arizona State on April 11, 2021. Sunday also snapped an 11-match winless streak against ranked opponents.

"I thought we started really well," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the win. "We knew we had to start well against a team like this. We defended very well today. Greer [Maguire], Faith [Leyba], Phoenix [Dawn Miranda], Rachel [Rosen] and then Jade [Babcock-Chi] and Lawson [Willis] when they went back there were rock solid all day. Jordi [Nytes] managed the game and did very well in goal.

"I think where the game was won for us was in the midfield. Their [Michigan State] movement is so dynamic. I thought that we, for the most part, handled it well and we were opportunistic going forward with two very good goals. It was a great win for the Buffs today."

Shyra James and Ally Clark each picked up their second goal of the season. James got the Buffs on the board in the first half and Clark added some insurance in the final third of the match.

"The first goal from Shyra was class," Sanchez added. "Lila [Dere] slipped the ball in and Shyra just turns the defender and smashes it in. You're almost surprised when she doesn't finish those. That really took the pressure off us. Ally's goal in the second half was just a hustle play. She understood what we talked about at halftime. She pressed, won it and kept composure."

Michigan State (3-1-0) led the contest 18-13 in shots and had a slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Jordan Nytes was up for the challenge, stopping all five attempts and recording her third shutout of the season.

The two sides combined for 22 fouls in what was at times a physical contest. The Buffs used the physicality to their advantage, wearing down the Spartans late in the match.

"I was really pleased in the second half with the players we subbed in our level of play didn't drop off," Sanchez noted. "The second goal from Ally kind of killed the game off, but even before that, I felt really good with what we're doing and how we're limiting their opportunities. It was important for us to start well while both teams were fresh and I thought in the second half our depth and fitness really helped push us over the finish line."

Colorado continues at home next week with a pair of matches against NCAA Tournament teams. The Buffs open the week against North Carolina State on Thursday (7 p.m. MT) and will take on Purdue on Sunday (Noon MT).

Notes
The win against No. 14 MSU ties the highest ranked win since beating No. 14 USC on March 15, 2021…CU was 0-7-4 against ranked opponents in the last two seasons…James jumped Melissa Cartmell (1997-00) on the all-time goals list, moving into fifth with 27 career goals…She also moved past Brie Hooks for sixth on CU's all-time points list with 58….CU is now 2-2-0 all-time against MSU…Clark is the first Buff to score in consecutive matches since Civana Kuhlmann scored against Oregon State and Oregon last season…CU is now 14-16-2 since 2012 against Power 5 opponents in non-conference play.

Was out of town last week so I missed both matches. Big win over Michigan State, I didn't see that coming. Looks like the Spartans got off more shots but the Buffs weathered the storm and were able to score their own goals. Nytes is a "keeper." ;)

Seemed fairly even imo. CU got lucky with a MSU shot they went off the crossbar and almost went in, otherwise it seemed pretty even with both getting almost the same shots on goal numbers. Nytes is good and is a difference maker for this team.
