BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team returns to the state of California for the second-straight week with a match against Cal Friday at 8 p.m. MT followed by a match against No.18-ranked Stanford at 2 p.m.

Colorado (11-4, 2-4 Pac-12) is looking to rebound after dropping a pair of matches in Los Angeles against UCLA and USC. The Buffs fell from the top-25 rankings but have an opportunity to make a statement against Cal (7-10, 0-6 Pac-12) and stop their road loss streak. The team will then seek their first win in Maples against the 18th-ranked team in the nation in Stanford (9-5, 4-2 Pac-12).
...

Sunday's matchup will feature the second sister matchup in three years for Colorado as Katie Lougeay's younger sister plays for Stanford.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
Cal has lost seven straight matches but picked up a set in their first four conference matches against Stanford, USC, Arizona and Arizona State. They recently were swept on the road in their two matches in Oregon. Cal is allowing opponents to hit .217 percent while only hitting .211 themselves.

Katie Smoot leads the team with 3.53 kills per set as four Bears have 100 or more kills. Bella Bergmark has an outstanding .386 hitting percentage from the middle with 130 kills to go along with 12 aces. Setter Annalea Maeder is also dangerous at the serve line with 21 aces this season. The defense is spread out with five players averaging two digs per set, but Bergmark owns the net with 58 blocks this season.

SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
Stanford is looking to recover from last season when it didn't make the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. They defeated No.5 Florida at home in four sets before losing to the top-ranked Longhorns in Texas in a sweep. They also fell to No.13 Minnesota in the Pac-12/BIG TEN Challenge before taking down No.18 Penn State in five sets. Their non-conference schedule finished with a win at home against No.6 Nebraska in four sets and a loss to the defending national champions No.8 Kentucky on the road in five sets.

The Cardinal fell to UCLA at home in five sets and are coming off another loss against No.14 Oregon in five sets in Eugene. They will take on Utah Thursday before having two days to recover for the Buffs.

Stanford is hitting an outstanding .279 hitting percentage but allowing opponents to hit .218. They average 13.3 assists per set and 2.8 blocks per set for a good balance. Caitie Baird leads the team with 4.04 kills per set on a .278 hitting percentage, but not far behind is Kendall Kipp hitting .321 with 3.55 kills per set. Those two make up more than half of the team's kills this season. They are both good servers as well with Baird having 15 and Kipp having 17. Katie Lougeay's little sister Alex also has 17 for the Cardinal. Defensively, Elena Oglivie leads the conference in digs per set at 4.73 while McKenna Vicini is averaging 1.4 blocks per set.

The Bears came on late in the 1st set (believe it was something like 20-8 at one point), but the Buffs still get a pretty comfortable 25-19 1st set win.

The Buffs save their best play for late and get a 25-11 3rd set win for the SWEEEPPPPP!!!!!!

In what I assume hasn't happenned too often, especially in Pac 12 play, the Buffs held the Bears to an overall NEGATIVE hitting % (-.043) while hitting .240 themselves.

Now on to Palo Alto!

I stayed up to watch because I figured they would win this match.

Stanford on Sunday is extremely doubtful for a W.

Article after yesterday's win. (I didn't know they had such a LONG (15 match) conference road losing streak going. GREAT for the team to end that, and hopefully they can snag a few more matches away from Boulder this season!!!) -

BERKELEY – Colorado women's volleyball swept Cal 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-11) here Friday evening behind a strong defensive performance with 13 blocks.

The Buffs (12-4, 3-4 Pac-12) held the Golden Bears (7-11, 0-7 Pac-12) to a -.043 hitting percentage behind 13 blocks with four Buffs recording four or more total blocks.

Maya Tabron led the effort offensively and defensively, recording 13 kills on a .310 hitting percentage with five digs and six blocks, including two solo blocks. She was the only hitter with double-digit kills. Tabron was joined by Jill Schneggenburger with six kills while Alexia Kuehl and Meegan Hart each added five.

Hart also recorded six blocks for Colorado while Schneggenburger put down five and Kuehl had four. CU's defensive was so strong that only one Bear recorded a hitting percentage greater than .200. Hart had a team-best .364 hitting percentage while both Schneggenburger and Kuehl had greater than .230.

Also for Colorado, Jenna Ewert finished with three kills, 24 assists and seven digs. She was joined by Brynna DeLuzio who had 11 digs to lead CU while also recording three aces. Colorado was strong at the service line with eight aces as Schneggenburger and Savannah Perry added a pair each.

Colorado finished the match hitting .240 while only Bella Bergmark hit greater than .150 with six kills on a .400 hitting percentage for the Bears. Annalea Maeder added 10 digs and 12 assists to lead Cal in both categories.

The win snaps a 15-match losing streak in conference road matches for Colorado. They return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. with a tough matchup against No.18-ranked Stanford.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jesse Mahoney

Sweeps are rare in this conference and even harder to come by on the road, so we are obviously happy with the result. We were especially good defensively at the net. I think Maya had the best blocking match of her career- she impacted what they wanted to do offensively and changed their game plan. I liked how aggressively we served and certainly got them out of system which led to a lot of attack errors on their part. On to Stanford Sunday.

No surprise against the mega-talented (their lineups are ALWAYS filled with top 5-10 ranked commits) trees at their place, the Buffs lose the 3rd set 17-25 and match 0-3.

Overall for the weekend, nice for the team to end their road conference losing streak Friday.

Now, they need to just get ready for next weekend's matches against the Arizona schools. (With the 1st half of conference play ending next weekend, the Buffs play the AZ schools in 4 of their remaining 12 matches, and with neither ranked the Buffs should feel good about their chances against either IF they play good matches (although of course, being the Pac 12, neither opponent is anything close to a pushover).

I did watch the Stanford match and it was ugly.

The Buffs are a home team. Hopefully, they can beat both Arizona schools and yes, no Pac-12 team is a pushover. The same for the B1G.

I am so sick of seeing the Buffs hit so many tips instead of actually hitting the ball. Once a team proves they can cover tips, as Stanford did quite early on, its time to take a swing at the ball and try to tool the block rather than just handing a free ball to Stanford. Then save the tips for an occasional off-speed "surprise" shot when the defense is back expecting a hard hit ball
