After starting the season with a 4 team tournament on the road (Denton TX), VOLLEYBALL (2-1) continues its season with a couple 4 team tourneys it's hosting at the Events Center over the next 2 weekends. (In between the tourney's it's also Northern Colorado this coming Wednesday.)

One piece of (worthless) trivia for this weekend - all 3 opponents have canine nicknames.

Starting things off for CU at this 1st home tourney (named the "Buff Classic") is a Friday night match with the Georgia Bulldogs (Just out of the Top 25 receiving the 26th most votes in the poll; 2-1 so far with their only loss being to #15 FL State) followed up with a Saturday night contest against the Fresno State Bulldogs (2-1), and finally ending up against the RV (receiving votes) and (now) former conference foe Washington Huskies (2-0) Sunday afternoon.

As already seen with the home matches so far this season for soccer, looks like streams for ALL volleyball matches this weekend will be available for those with premium ($) ESPN+ subscriptions. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Note - For any big general volleyball fans, the other tourney matches this weekend at the Events Center that don't involve CU are as follows - Fresno State vs. Washington is Friday at 4:00 PM, Washington vs. Georgia is Saturday at 3:00 PM, and Fresno St. vs. Georgia is Sunday at 11:00 AM. Personally I'm very happy for those teams' fans that, as has been the case the last year or two, all these matches are also scheduled to be available on (ESPN+) streams. (Before that, CU would only stream matches they were involved in.)

Go Buffs!!!

I was very happy to see that all of the matches will be streamed on ESPN+, too.

That didn't happen with all of the matches last weekend.

Upset in the volleyball world last night. SMU beat the Fuskers. Maya Tabron is playing her final year of eligibility at SMU so she got to beat the Fuskers.

forgot Tabron was playing for SMU. Nice tourney this weekend. Looks like there are some good opponents. it is good to see Washington. I never understood why the old big 12 teams did not schedule CU for more OOC games in olympic sports. Easy travel and all that

Home opener day!

The Buffs looked pretty lost through a lot of the 1st set, but a GREAT late comeback tightens the set up before GA ends up getting it 22-25.

Hopefully the late momentum (CU was down 16-22 before a great service run) will carry over to the next set and beyond for the Buffs.

that was a fun match. Sydney Jordan had an incredible game. She is going to be very good. It was great to see Payne and Lilly D contribute offensively as well. I was worried after the first set but they started to receive and pass better and things turned around. Have to work on the blocking. I think this team could be all right this year. That sophomore class has some players in it.

To date myself and quote an old album title - "The kids are alright".

(Note - I don't know if I am going "blind", or if stats got corrected, but I had to go in and change many of the numbers I originally entered below for kills and so forth.)

Great jobs by the 4 sophomore hitters in this one (especially after a kind of rough start to the 1st set) - as Payne (14 kills while hitting .393) set her career mark for kills while Jordan (16) tied hers (from last week), Burilović led the team with 19 kills while also doing the most damage at the service line (notably going on a 6-7 point serving run early in the deciding 5th set to help give the Buffs a solid lead they never relinquished), and right-side hitter Dwinnell also got into double figures (11) in kills for the 1st time this year. The defense was also strong most of the night, and I believe the announcer said senior setter Simpson tied her career high in assists (55) while obviously (given the kill totals for MANY different Buffs) distributing the ball very well to all her options. (Looking at her Buff roster stats, Ms. Simpson's 55 assists may also have been her career best by 1.)

Hope they keep that level of performance up the remainder of the weekend (and of course beyond)!

I am embarrassed that I fell asleep in the 4th set. Thankfully, I got to watch the 4th and 5th sets this morning! Go Buffs!

I am impressed with Taylor Simpson as the setter. The team seemed to get more confidence as the match went along and they were in control in Set 5.

Hope that carries over in to today.

(Note - the numbers for kills and so forth I noted for individuals in post #17 above look to be incorrect after further adjustments I assume the team made to the box score (based on replay or audit?). Please see article quoted below for correct numbers, although even with that I see a few differences between what it says and what the box score linked to below says.)

Colorado Volleyball earns its first win over an SEC team since 2008

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado volleyball team (3-1) defeated the Georgia Bulldogs in five sets (22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 15-9) in their home opener in the Buffs Classic at CU Events Center in Boulder, Colo., on Friday, Sept. 6. This is the Buffs first win over an SEC team since a sweep of Mississippi State on Aug. 30, 2008.

After going down in the first set, the Buffs came back to grab two sets in a row. Though the Bulldogs forced a fifth set, Colorado ran away with it, not allowing the opponent's score to reach double-digits.

"We had kind of a big lead in set one," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "I thought we played great volleyball from that point on, and really it was anyone's game going into that fifth [set], and we had some great serving runs. I thought the team managed the game plan really well. We left some blocks on the table, but we were fantastic offensively, and that was really exciting to see. Glad to be home, for sure."

Four volleyball Buffs saw career-highs against the Bulldogs: senior setter Taylor Simpson with 55 assists, sophomore middle blocker Cayla Payne with 19 kills, sophomore outside hitter with 18 kills and sophomore defensive specialist Avery Bolles with 12 digs.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • So. MB Cayla Payne reached a career-high in kills with 19 (3e, 28att, hitting .571) and a 69% kill percentage. She also notched two digs and four blocks.
  • Payne on playing this season so far: "I think it was nice last year being able to play and get some court time so I'm feeling a lot more comfortable on the court. I think it's just working every day in practice and making sure that I'm upping my skills, and just getting better. Also throughout the long matches, knowing that playing consistently is a big thing and keeping my swings high."
  • Sr. S Taylor Simpson had a career-high 55 assists, coupled with 10 digs and reached her first double-double of the season (fifth of her career). The Buffs hit .292 on the night when Simpson set.
  • So. OH Sydney Jordan also had a career-high in kills with 18 (6e, 44att, hitting .273) and a 41% kill percentage. Jordan had two aces and nine digs to go along with it.
  • So. DS/L Avery Bolles was the fourth Buff to register a career-high with 12 digs and a 59% dig percentage against the Bulldogs. Bolles also had an ace and three assists.
  • So. OH Ana Burilovic matched Jordan with 18 kills (10e, 46att) and a 38% kill percentage. She also had two aces and two digs.
  • So. OH Lily Dwinell had nine kills and two digs for the Buffs, and Jr. DS/L Sarah Morton led both teams with16 digs and matched Bolles' 59% dig percentage.
  • On the serve, Colorado had Georgia of of system 72% of the time. The Buffs out-killed (67-55) and out-dug (55-53) the Bulldogs but managed the same service ace total of seven.
  • For the Bulldogs, Bianna Muoneke had 23 kills and Sophie Fischer had eight blocks and 10 kills.
...

UP NEXT:
  • The Buffaloes will face Fresno State for their second match of the Buffs Classic tomorrow, Sept. 7. Frist serve is set for 6 p.m. MT at CU Events Center. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ and links to watch are available at CUBuffs.com.
MATCH NOTES:
  • Colorado improves to 4-3 all-time against Georgia.
  • The Buffs get their third win of the season, staying undefeated in five-set matches.
  • CU gets its first win over an SEC team since Aug. 30, 2008.
Under ninth-year head coach Jesse Mahoney, Colorado earned a winning record in the 2023 season (16-15) and went 8-12 against Pac-12 opponents. A significant win for the Buffs took place against 17th-ranked Arizona State last year. The Buffs took down the Sun Devils in three sets, completing the sweep and earning CU's only win against a ranked opponent in the 2023 season. Colorado also swept Arizona (Oct. 20) and Washington (Nov. 19) and finished seventh in the Pac-12.

The 3rd set was MUCH tighter, but CU completes the sweep by a 25-23 score. (Extra nice to win in 3 with what will probably be a tight and tough matinee battle with Washington tomorrow.)

Way to go Buffs!
(In non-Buff news (at least directly), their one loss this season, to Miami of FL, is looking less "bad" all the time as that squad just beat 2 time defending champion Texas in Austin today.)

BOULDER – Colorado volleyball swept the Fresno State Bulldogs (25-17, 25-15, 25-23) in their second match of the Buffs Classic at CU Events Center on Saturday, Sept. 8. This is the Buffs 43rd win over a Mountain West opponent all-time.

The Buffs went up big early, holding the Bulldogs below 20 points in the first two sets and going on multiple runs – two as high as 8-0 and 9-0. Fresno State battled hard in set three, but Colorado managed to pull away and win by two.

"Two thirds of that match were really well done by us," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "[Fresno State is] a very good team, and I think very well coached, and they've got some really nice players. And the first two sets, we served extremely well and got them out of system and were able to run some points there. […] A lot of really good performances. [Ana Burilovic] was fantastic from the service line. And [Sydney Jordan] had .481 which is spectacular with the amount of swings that she took. So, glad to get that match over in three."

The Buffs out-killed (45-36), out-aced (11-4) and out-dug (33-26) the Bulldogs, and they registered a .407 team hitting percentage. On the serve, with help from sophomore outside hitter Ana Burilovic's career-high six aces, the Buffs had the Bulldogs out of system 51% of the time.

  • Sr. S Taylor Simpson had 37 assists on the night and five digs.
  • So. OH Lily Dwinell had eight kills (2e, 15att, hitting .400) and two digs, and Jr. DS/L Sarah Morton had eight digs.

  • This third and final match of Buffs Classic will determine first place in the tournament; the 11 a.m. match between Fresno State and Georgia will determine third and fourth place.

MATCH NOTES:
  • Colorado moves to 1-1 all-time against Fresno State.
  • The Buffs get their fourth win of the season, going 2-1 in three-set matches. They are also undefeated on the newly installed Taraflex court in CU Events Center.
