VOLLEYBALL (3-0) continues its season later this week with a 2nd straight 3 match in 3 day tourney on the road, this time in the Golden State. The tourney, the Anteater Classic, opens up with CU facing the Fresno State Bulldogs (FSU; 2-1) this Thursday afternoon, followed by a Friday tilt with the Univ. of Pennsylvania (Penn; this looks to be their 1st match of the season; Last season they were 13-10 overall and 7-7 in Ivy League play), and then's CU finale for the week with a matchup Saturday against the host UC-Irvine Anteaters (UCI; 2-1).

Not that it means much of anything for this season, but in the final RPI ratings for last (2024) season (dated 12/22/24, https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi ), CU ended up at #97, while FSU was #131, Penn was #249 and UCI #157. (This week I've decided to also give info on the Massey rankings, which are the only other free ratings I know of for volleyball. They do already have VERY early 2025 ratings calculated, but decided last year's were more comprehensive, so decided to list them (
(from https://masseyratings.com/cvol2024/11590/ratings). They had CU end the year at #56 , FSU #101 , Penn #270 and UCI #120. )

Note that as I type this there is no streaming indicated for any of this week's matches except for the one Saturday with host UCI. That was standard up til 2-3 years ago (even for CU home tourneys), but hopefully maybe (???) streams will be added for the other 2 matches, in which case I'll include info later. Thankfully it DOES look like UCI, like CU, uses ESPN+ for its streams, so those of us who already have a subscription to that service should be able to watch that match without any additional cost. (See near the end of this post for links and more info on streaming.)

Go Buffs!!!

Colorado Volleyball Continues Road Competition in Anteater Classic

The Buffs will travel to Irvine, Calif., for their next three matches against Fresno State, UPenn and UC Irvine

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) goes back on the road this weekend to take on Fresno State (2-1, 0-0 Mountain West), UPenn (0-0, 0-0 Ivy League) and UC Irvine (2-1, 0-0 Big West) in the Anteater Classic. All three Buff matches are hosted by UC Irvine at Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif., from Sept. 4-6.

The Buffs' match against UC Irvine on Sept. 6 will be streamed on ESPN+, and first serve is set for 6 p.m. MT. While the other two matches will not be broadcast or live-streamed, live stats will be available online under the Volleyball Buffs' schedule page.

Last weekend, Colorado swept all three teams in the Rumble in the Rockies, going undefeated in both matches and sets for the first time since 2008. The Buffs had a higher hitting percentage, more kills, more aces and more blocks than all three opponents. So. MB Maria Splawska reached a career-high and led the match against Wyoming in blocks with nine (two solo) (Aug. 31). Sr. DS/L Sarah Morton led all three matches in digs, and Jr. PIN Ana Burilovic led in kills for all competitions.

BEAT THE BULLDOGS: Colorado will face the Fresno State Bulldogs for just the third time in program history. CU met with Fresno State last season in the Buffs Classic in Boulder, where the Buffs managed a sweep to even the all-time record to 1-1.

WHAT'S FOR BREAKFAST?: In the second match of the Anteater Classic, the Buffs will go head-to-head with the Pennsylvania (UPenn) Quakers. This will be the opening matchup in Buffs-Quakers program history, and this is the second of three times this season Colorado will meet an opponent for the first time.

ARE EUCHIDDING ME?: The Buffs will face the UC Irvine Anteaters in the final match of the tournament, and for the fourth time in program history. Last season, UCI came to Boulder for a five-set thriller in Buffs Invitational, where CU came out on top. The Buffs also played the Anteaters in 2016 (W, 3-0) and 1987 (L, 3-0).

MILESTONE WATCH: Sr. DS/L Sarah Morton has 288 assists, 12 away from 300. Jr. PIN Lily Dwinell has 478 kills, 22 away from 500, and 98 digs, two away from 100. Jr. DS/L Avery Bolles has 89 aces, 11 away from 100, and 193 digs, seven away from 200.

MILESTONE CHECK: Jr. PIN Ana Burilovic reached 500 kills against Cleveland State (8/29), and Jr. MB Cayla Payne reached 200 kills versus the Vikings.

A tough stretch found the Buffs down 10-14 in the 2nd, but they seem to have responded VERY well to the resulting timeout as they came back and won 25-18 to go up 2-0 in sets.

The team got up big in the 3rd, with 8 straight scored early while recent transfer Neal was serving. They kept it up and complete the sweep after a 25-13 3rd set.

Way to go Buffs!

Match day #2 for this tourney - opening serve around 6-7 hours away.

Less than 5 hours until the opening serve.
(As expected going into the week, today's game should be CU's biggest test of the week, as like the Buffs did on Thursday UCI yesterday swept Fresno State.)

For the 1st time this season, the team has dropped a set. Thankfully, they 1st cruised to an easy 25-14 win in set 1, but then UCI pulled away late n the 2nd to tie the match 1-1 by a 19-25 score. (Believe the 2nd was tied as late as 17 all, but the Buffs had some rough serve receive late that led to UCI getting a lot of blocks and easy kills.)

The Buffs are going to have to improve their level of play (and UCI may have to come back down to earth some) as the later has the lead most of the 3rd set and then pulls away even more for an easy 16-25 win and a 1-2 set advantage.

From the UC-Irvine article at the end of the tourney (https://ucirvinesports.com/news/202...oppled-by-penn-to-close-anteater-classic.aspx), congrats to Ms's. Burilović and Payne on being named to the All-Tourney team for the Buffs. (Nothing to do with the Buffs, but looks like after CU's comeback against them yesterday evening, UC-Irvine might have had a pretty bad emotional hangover, as they were beaten BAD by Penn earlier today (scoring only 11, 11 and 13 points in a sweep). As noted earlier in this thread, Penn was the team CU handled easily a couple days ago while heavily experimenting with its roster. Although, Penn also swept Fresno State, so maybe the Buffs met them on the right day.)
