BOULDER – Colorado women's volleyball team faces arguably the toughest weekend of the season this Friday and Sunday when the team heads to the Bay Area to take on No.2-ranked Stanford and No.15 Cal.
The Buffaloes (8-8, 0-6 Pac-12) take on the defending national champions in Stanford (11-3, 5-1 Pac-12) Friday evening at 9 p.m. (MT). Stanford has been without two-time AVCA National Player of the Year Kathryn Plummer for two weeks but have faired well with four wins against the Oregon and Arizona schools. Cal (15-1, 5-1 Pac-12) has been on a tear this season with the best overall record in the Pac-12 and their only loss coming against Stanford. CU goes to Berkeley Sunday at 1 p.m. (MT).
...
The Buffs are looking to turn the tide against two strong opponents. A pair of top-15 wins would significantly boost the Buffs RPI ranking and set them on the path to recover the Pac-12 season and finish with a chance at an NCAA Tournament bid.
SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
The defending national champions have been without their two-time National Player of the Year Kathryn Plummer, but freshman Kendall Kipp has stepped up in her absence, earning back-to-back Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors. The Cardinal rolled through numerous top-10 teams including No.7 Florida, No.3 Texas, No.4 Penn State and No.1 Nebraska but has four-set losses to No.8 Minnesota, No.12 BYU and No.8 Washington.
The Cardinal are putting down nearly 15 kills per set, 15 digs per set and nearly three blocks per set. Setter Jenna Gray has 594 assists with more than 11.5 per set this season. Plummer still leads the team with 197 kills and more than five per set, followed by Audriana Fitzmorris with 134 and Madeleine Gates with 111. Kipp has 108 with a career-high 16 and .306 hitting percentage against Oregon and 11 kills and a .625 hitting percentage against Arizona State. On the defensive side, libero Morgan Hentz is averaging more than five digs per set while Holly Campbell and Gates have combined for 129 total blocks led by Gates 68.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
Cal is a different team than the one the Buffs took down twice last season. The team has a 15-1 record, the best in the Pac-12. Since their only loss to Stanford in four sets, the Golden Bears hosted a five-set match against Washington State and have swept both Oregon teams on the road and both Arizona teams including a sweep of Arizona State on Stanford's campus after power outages forced the team to leave Haas Pavilion.
The Golden Bears are hitting .308 as a team and holding opponents to just a .142 hitting percentage. Mima Mirkovic leads the offense with 183 kills and is joined by Maddie Haynes with 134, Bailee Huizenga with 115 and Preslie Anderson with 107. Isabel Potter is leading the offense with 415 assists this season.
Like the offense, the defensive battle is spread out with Anderson leading the front with 54 blocks. The team has six players with 29 or more blocks.
