Matches thread- Volleyball visits #16 Oregon (Friday, 8:00 MT) and OSU (Sunday, noon MT)

Interesting match statistically-
  • Ducks outscored the Buffs by a little (4 points- as can happen with sets used in volleyball), but had a MUCH better hitting %: .268 vs. .194.
  • Key thing that kept the Buffs in it was serving efficiency, ending up with 4 aces and only 3 errors vs. 3 and 11 for the ducks.
  • Took the block a LONG time to get going for the Buffs, but they end up tied with the ducks at 8. (Technically, the Buffs showing with 8.5 blocks- must have been credited with a triple block at some point.)
  • Can't remember a match where the Buffs relied more on the middles (esp. Abu) and right-side (although Alexa Smith came back strong after a rough start to get 15 kills and hit a decent .220). Could be a good sign for the coming matches and years.

Post-match article. (As I read it, no coach's quotes yet, so may not be final version.) -

EUGENE, Ore. – Despite having 17 less kills and 11 less digs, the University of Colorado women's volleyball team leaves Eugene, Oregon, with a victory against the No.16-ranked team in the nation in five sets (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 16-14) Friday evening.

Redshirt freshman Anyse Smith took the fifth set and said enough at a 4-4 mark. She put down three straight kills to give CU a 7-4 lead. Smith accounted for the next two CU points as well with a block assists and a kill. In total the freshman accounted for five kills and a block in the final set while hitting .625. She was joined by Alexa Smith and Naghede Abu, each that had three kills and hit .280 or better in the last act.

With the victory Colorado improves to 16-12 overall with an 8-9 record in conference play. The Ducks fall to 18-10 with a 11-7 conference record as the Buffs spoil senior night.
...

With the first top-20 win of the season the Buffaloes turn to Oregon State Sunday at noon. CU has put down the toughest opponent they were going to face in this final must-win section and can now breathe a small sigh of relief and look towards the final three matches as a welcoming challenge to assert themselves as a team to contend in the NCAA Tournament.

I should have watched this match instead of men's basketball, although I might have been just as frustrated.

Jesse's teams do keep improving as the season goes along. Sounds like Abu and Anyse Smith both had outstanding matches to go along with another fine outing by Alexa Smith. The Ducks must be kicking themselves as they beat us in every category statistically. But it's the score that matters and CU won!

Buffs with a rough start- no rhythm yet and some rough serve receive- they are challenging an osu pancake. Assuming no reversal, they're down 14-17.

Buffs didn't win the challenge (ruled inconclusive), but have gone on a 4 point scoring run with frosh Neverdowski serving. timeout osu with the Buffs up 18-17.

Buff timeout after they lose a challenge and then lose a point on osu's serve with another bad serve receive. 22-23 osu.

Not pretty- osu gets the 1st 24-26. Other than osu not showing any indication they can stop Anyse Smith, not much good in the set.

Looks like one of those very dangerous Sunday matinee matches. Not much energy so far from the Buffs.

Phew- Buffs survive a marathon 2nd set (33-31) and tie it up 1-1.

Buff timeout down 12-16.

Team just doesn't seem in it today- can't seem to sustain or gain any momentum. Ewert is starting to show some energy- hopefully that will help.

Buffs got it down to 1, then give up 2 straight with some sloppy play- take their 2nd timeout down 17-20.

With their backs against the wall, Buffs starting the 4th set strong, featuring at least 3 or 4 blocks to take a 7-2 lead. Timeout osu.

Buff block continuing to impress this set. osu takes their 2nd timeout with the Buffs up 17-10.

Buffs had a comfortable 23-18 lead but have to take a timeout after giving up 5 straight as it's tied at 23.

Slight change to the above. After I wrote it, live stats changed the score to 24-22 Buffs at the timeout.

Buffs then get the next point to force a 5th set!

PPPPPHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Buffs win with a 15-10 5th set score.

Since losing their 1st 2 matches to open Pac play, the Buffs have been close to but I don't believe have never reached .500, but this win finally gets them there (at 9-9)!
