Montez and Overreaction

Maybe, just sort of seemed like you were writing those off a little bit. I think it's just as likely we drop a game we shouldn't to those next 5 opponents as it is we win one of those last two.
You're reading too much absolutism in my posts. I'm rarely thinking in absolutes. I only said "I don't see" us winning one of those two.

Need to win this week. Get it done and take it week by week. I still think 8 wins is possible especially with UofA, OSU, Cal, ASU and Utah. All are winnable. WSU is the toughest game left then USC. 8 wins are still possible

Past performance is a better predictor than potential of future performance. That’s what concerns me most about the Buffs not blowing out the non-con. One game, ok, some of the best teams do that. But every game...that’s symptomatic. CU should have flat out be UCLA. WSU, Cal-Berkeley, USC, Utah have me worried. Hell, even ASU at this point.

This season has not really surprised me so far. Bottom line is that MM does not quite have CU at the point of consistent reload year after year. The team still has to rebuild a bit from the juggernaut from last year and is experiencing a predictable drop off, especially considering the defensive staff turnover.

My hope is that the new floor for this program is a minimum of 6 wins. And an expectation that the floor gets to a consistent 8 win minimum soon.

This is what CU is as a football program. They are not a perennial 9-10 win program, and never will be, short of Chev eventually getting the HC job, who ends up being Tom Herman-esque in his coaching and recruiting abilities, and then never leaving. If they are a perennial 8 win team, with the occasional 6 and 10+ win years when it all comes together, I can live with that.

The team is fatally flawed on the OL. Fatally flawed teams should be happy to get to bowl season. That's the goal for the year now. What we've learned the last two games is that this team isn't a contender for any sort of division title much less a championship. So, hopes crushed, but we aren't a bad team, we are an average team. Average teams with pre-season schedules like ours need to go to bowl games. I'd really like to go to a bowl game 8-4 instead of 6-6, and that all hinges on something getting fixed on the OL and the young guys stepping up.

Thankfully, every time we see a young guy, they flash. If this team doesn't implode, future is bright.

Juggernaut seems to be the word of the day. Last year’s Buffs were very good but not a juggernaut. Alabama is a juggernaut. Actually I don’t know what the word means other than it’s typical context.

I appreciate your overall theme of “don’t overreact.”

The issue is when is the offense going to get its act together? With 3 games left?

For me, the most frustrating part is the pure stupidity when it comes to the play calling and play design. We were successful almost all night on power runs up the middle. And for some reason we refused to stick with it. UCLA was gassed in the fourth and we continued to bail them out by throwing after multiple successful runs.

When you go on the road and hold an offense like that to 27 points, force a turnover and don’t commit one, and are playing against a bad defense, what is the excuse to lose?

AGREED, I was really feeling that we had a moment where we could have ran them out of the building and then they throw on 1st down, which is a panic move. If you are averaging anywhere between 4-7 yards per rush over the past handful of rushes and you are blowing the line back, then you must run on 1st down and that will set the tone for the next play calls. I am really enamored with the Pistol / Wishbone looking formation with 3 playmakers in the backfield behind Montez who is in the pistol. If you can power run, play fake, max protect out of that formation, it seemed to be such a dynamic idea and I saw nothing by success out of it. That could be the new Buff Bone offense. It also completely hides the lack of quality O-Line play!

CU can be a perennial 9-10 win team. The PAC isn't deep enough to prevent that if they do it right.

What that would take is a reversal of what they are right now though. They need to add 1-2 more quality recruiters and then focus on copying the Wisconsin model. Bring in a solid class of OL prospects each year. They don't all have to be 4* or 5* types but they need to be at least quality 3* guys. They also need to do it each year so that they have a pipeline of guys developing and ready to step up. If you get one or two who jump to the front early so much the better but mostly you have guys spending 2-3 years preparing to enter the depth chart and most of your starters upper classmen.

D-Line you do the same model except the guys who are explosive see time earlier and you are rotating more guys onto the field.

A team that can control the LOS can win 9-10 games a year in the PAC recruiting decent quality players at the other positions.

We will not recruit like USC, probably be a step below Stanford and a small step behind UW and Oregon. Maintaining success we should be able to recruit with anyone else in the league.

Since joining the Pac 12, Utah has won 9+ games 3/6 years
Since Neuheisel took over, UCLA has won 9+ games 3/9 years
Since Carroll left USC, they have won 9+ games 4/7 years
Between Erickson and Graham, ASU has won 9+ games 3/10 years (about to be 3/11)
Leach has won 9 games 1/5 years at Wazzu (probably makes it 2/6 this season)
Belotti won 9+ games 7/14 years and Chip Kelly did it all 4 years as HC
Harbaugh only did it 1/4 years and Shaw has maintained and improved by doing it 5/6 years so far.

Point is, it's very hard to be a perennial 9+ win team. Under McCartney, CU did it 4/12 seasons and under Barnett, they did it 2/7 seasons. What makes you believe CU can be a 9+ win/year program?

Nice post Mtn. I agree - It all starts up front. You can have Allsome OL and DL and win games with subpar skill players. Truth known OL and DL is a skill position that does not get the respect.

I can guarantee you that many including in the Stanford fan base were convinced that Stanford could not do this, they have.

Never said it would be easy but with the right OOC scheduling CU should be able to win 6/8 conference games and 9 total most years. Will they, odds are no but to say CU can't I think is not giving the program credit for it's potential.

I remember, under Walt Harris, watching Stanford lose at home to UC Davis and get waxed by Navy (two games I attended with my dad)... Fans were throwing their season ticket packets onto the field.

Around 2006 there were very serious discussions around Stanford as to whether the University could ever field a competitive football team again. Ultimately, the boosters and University finally agreed to play the big coaching salary game (prior coaches had been compensated far below their peers, for example, Teevens), and knocked the subsequent two hires out of the park. Further, they agreed to invest in infrastructure, knocking down a historic stadium and building a new one, which reduced the capacity in half. Shaw is the right guy for the job, their style fits the players they can get, and their facility fits the support they can realistically expect.

I think (or hope) that CU is finally showing a similar commitment, evidenced by the IPF/Champions Center, and Mac's extension. CU should be bowl eligible, if not better, 3 seasons out of each 4, in my opinion, with the potential upside being much higher. We don't suffer the same systematic size/coffers/geographic/recruiting disadvatanges of OSU or Wazzu (though they're way above historical averages this year). I'd love to see us as one of the top three programs in the South with the potential to win the division in any given year.

There aren't very many similarities between CU and Stanford other than the fact that they're both in the Pac 12. Regardless, I don't think MM is dynamic enough personality or will ever put the kind of emphasis on recruiting (dropping dead weight on the staff) to get CU to that level. I did said, however, that it might be possible if a guy like Chev (who would likely stay at CU as HC for as long as they'd have him) ended up being the next big thing in coaching, ala Urban Meyer or Tom Herman. That's an extreme long shot, though.

Mac still recruits like a MWC coach.....never be consistent 9 game winner with this recruiting approach...DJ Durkin is killing it in Maryland....Lets face it...Mac is not a dynamic recruiter. We will never be elite with him as HC....decent....but not elite. Need a guy like Durkin...Chiv?

If Mac decides to get serious about recruiting and brings in dynamic recruiting position coaches, mainly DL and TE at the moment, then I think he has a chance to get CU to the next level. I think Mac is a good CEO and he definitely knows his **** on defense, but this is the first time in his Head Coaching career the rebuild is finished and he has high expectations and a responsibility of growing the program. I hope RG helps him realize this during the offseason.

he's like "oh ****, now I gotta win and keep winning?! ****"

Here's my take on the biggest problems in the UCLA game:

Bad offensive play call
Bad O-Line pass protection
Blackout Boys dropping passes

The offensive play call has been bad for 4+ years. Time to get rid of Lindgren. Anyone agree?

Agreed.....Chiv was killing it for two years...but it appears as if he has lost some of his steam....maybe it is just me....but is the same thing that existed between Mac and Leavitt building between Mac and Chiv? Doesn't look in this video as if Lindgren and Chiv are buddies.....maybe I am reading the interview incorrectly....

This is Chev's second season at Colorado.

One thing to keep in mind is that CU has a 10th AC spot opening up soon. I would bet that Chidera-Uzo-Diribe/Nate Taye wants that spot. Both are young and have good SoCal ties. I would bet both can recruit. I think Jeffcoat is a good coach, so if you can supplement him with a recruiter, the DL could be really good. The best option would obviously be to get someone who is both. Now, if Bernardi retires (please), you need to get a young recruiter in there or someone who can help Adams out on the OL. Maybe get a OT/TE coach who can recruit. My totally unrealistic dream is Les Miles

Makes no sense to keep Jeffcoat unless he becomes a OC/DC. Having no recruiting responsibilities as an assistant coach would be stealing.

Yup, and the teams that have a DL coach who actually recruits still have an advantage over us. He is one less guy out there selling the program than we should have.

In the world of Type A Macho Male Coaches, having Co-Anything is stupid! Just like the saying goes, "If you have to play two QB's cause you cannot decide who is #1, then you have none" Chiv knows what he does, can do, and wants to do, and having to share with Lindgren who has much less to offer than him is annoying. Technically, Lindgren was Demoted and Chiv was Promoted, but it seems that Lindgren still believes he has clout. Chiv cannot be happy getting all the recruits and then defaulting to Lindgren's boring offense. Also, as long as the Offense is struggling, that makes Chiv look bad as the Co-OC. I expect a change of some kind to be made at the end of the year, and the only smart choice is to move on from Lindgren and solidify the role that Chiv has. Anything else could continue to erode the relationship and be very scary. Lindgren literally recruits one QB per year and acts as though that is good enough. Dead weight!

You seem to think you know how all these men feel about a lot of things.
