It's Championships Day #1!

Note - per a tweet I saw from yesterday, today's main coverage (to begin at 5:30 PM MT) has been moved to ESPN2. (It was originally going to be on ESPNU.)

With only the 4X400M team qualifying for the Buffs on the men's side, and this being one of two days designated as being for men's events, this is a relatively quiet day for the Buffs. (Their race is scheduled to begin at 8:48 PM MT.) It will be fun to see if, with them not having any other races today (which I don't think was the case in any of their other races this season), the relay team can improve on its #2 all-time Buff mark from the preliminaries (3:05.50) and maybe challenge the top all-time mark. (The current CU record is a 3:05.16 from 1994 with a team that consisted of Johnson/Carruth/Warren/Mitchell (per https://cubuffs.com/sports/2004/2/11/track-field-records.aspx).)

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program sends 17 total Buffaloes to the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Wednesday through Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The women have a program record 12 entries and are sending a dozen women to the championships, tying the 1996 team for the most women attending. The men are sending a 4x400-meter relay for the first time in program history.

Action will begin Wednesday evening at 8:48 p.m. MT when the men's relay of Aaron McCoy, Tyler Williams, Ian Gilmore, Garrett Nelson and Kellen Monestime take to the track. The four members of the relay will compete in the third heat of the semifinals seeking a top-two finish in the final heat or one of the next three fastest times. The men's team will have the added bonus of knowing what the final qualifying time will be after the first two heats finish.

The Buffs ran a 3:05.50 time in the NCAA West Preliminaries, the second-best mark in school history and less than half a second from the school record of 3:05.16 set in 1994. Colorado has their work cut out for them with five relays in their heat with qualifying times under 3:05 led by Florida's 3:01.22.

EUGENE – The University of Colorado men's 4x400-meter relay competed here Wednesday evening in the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships semifinal, finishing 19th to wrap up the CU men's season.

The quartet of Tyler Williams, Ian Gilmore, Garrett Nelson and Aaron McCoy finished sixth in the third and final heat of the semifinals in 3:06.12, their second-fastest relay time this season. The Buffs ran 3:05.50 two weeks ago in Arkansas at the NCAA West Preliminaries to move their squad up to second in CU history in the event.

The men had a tough task ahead of them after the first heat had five teams run 3:01.79 or better, immediately dropping the three additional time qualifier spots to nearly four seconds better than the CU school record. The second heat finished slower than all five qualifiers from the first heat, leaving the bubble time intact for the race.

It's a busy day #1 of the Championships for the CU women, with I believe 7 involved in individual races (5 in various prelims plus 2 in the 10000M final), along with 4 racing in the (day ending) 4X400M relay prelims.

(Note- the below tweet indicates that coverage is on ESPN2, but everything I see shows it will be on ESPNU.)

Go Buffs!

Buffs advance 1 of 2 in the 1500M to Saturday's final.

Congrats to Ms. DeGenero for a relatively easy looking run, staying out of trouble in the outside front until the last 30-40 yards) advancing in what was a slow heat #1.

(Tough luck for senior Rachel McArthur, who unfortunately came in less than 100% (Coach Wetmore said something in a quote after prelims, and she was the only one competing with any visible wrap around their leg), and then looked to get clipped in the back stretch of the final lap. With her not 100%, it was a good accomplishment for her to even make it to Eugene.)

And the Buffs also advance 1 out of 2 to the finals in the 3000M steeplechase.

Congrats to Madie Boreman on her relatively comfortable -looking run to finish 2nd in heat #2.

And, Gabrielle Orie, although not advancing, finished only ~1 second off her PR, so shouldn't be too disappointed with the result.

RS Sophomore Abby Glynn doesn't quite qualify in the 400M hurdles, but runs within .13 seconds of her PR (set at prelims) for a solid 10th or 11th place finish. That should make her a 2nd team All-American, with at least 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Looks like a great finish by RS sophomore (per the roster; freshman in the official results) Emily Covert, who finishes 4th in the 10000M (good for 5 points in the team score).

Nice result also for India Johnson, who finishes 10th. As with Ms. Glynn in the 400M hurdles, that finish earns her 2nd team All-American honors.

Article after today's racing -

EUGENE – Colorado women's track and field sophomore Emily Covert opened the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the women with a fourth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run final here Thursday evening.

Covert picked up a First Team All-American honor, the first for her outdoors, after running 33:14.64. Her teammate India Johnson earned a Second Team All-American honor finishing 10th in the race in 33:34.93.

The race was a bizarre one with a story of two halves. The first half saw Covert along with 22 other women losing sight of Washington's Haley Herberg who set out a blistering pace through the first 5,000-meters, built a lead as large as 130 meters in the process. Covert stayed patiently with the chase group, sitting around fifth for most of the first half. Johnson started from the back of the race and made her way up to 14th through the first half.

In the second half of the race, Herberg's 89-second laps began to get cut by consecutive 86-second laps for a chase pack of six that included Covert. They closed the gap to 50 meters with two miles remaining, and half a mile later Alabama's Mercy Chelangat had passed Herberg and never looked back. Covert did her best to match the moves of Chelangat and Rice's Grace Forbes but stayed in fifth for most of the race as Johnson had worked her way up to 12th. Covert passed Herberg for her finishing position, giving her a First Team All-America honor in cross country and outdoor track along with a Second Team honor indoors this year. Johnson passed two other athletes on her way to her first Second Team All-America finish for Colorado.

One other Buff picked up Second Team All-America honors today while two others secured their spot in the finals of their events and secured All-American finishes. Abbey Glynn raced in the 400-meter hurdles first heat, coming off the final curve in fifth before stumbling slightly over the final hurdle. She was able to keep her composure and reclaim the fifth position in the final five meters of the race after giving it up off the hurdle. Glynn finished in 57.18 seconds, ending the first heat with the final bubble time. Unfortunately, that time was passed as she finished 10th overall. Her time was greater than the automatic third qualifying spot out of the third heat, but due to that athlete moving onto finals, Glynn drops one spot to finish 11th in the NCAA.

The two athletes that advanced to finals are Micaela DeGenero in the 1,500-meter run along with Madie Boreman in the steeplechase. DeGenero was the first Buff on the track Thursday in the first heat of the women's 1,500 and she immediately went to the front of the race, sitting on the outside of lane one. Stanford's Aragon took the lead after the first 300 meters as the pack went out with a slow 76-second first 400 meters. DeGenero tried to take the lead with 500-meters remaining in the race, finally taking it with 250 meters remaining. DeGenero picked up the speed around the curve to hold off Binghamton's Emily Mackay, the was passed with 40 meters left to finish third in her heat in 4:21.61.

In the women's steeplechase second heat, Boreman slid right into third with her teammate Gabrielle Orie at the back of the pack. The pack was so tight at the start of the race an athlete fell on a barrier and forced another athlete outside the rail temporarily. Boreman sat third right behind the leader with two laps remaining as a pack of seven broke out. She moved up to second at the bell but fell to third on the backstretch. Boreman claimed the lead momentarily heading into the water jump before moving over to clear safely as she cruised to the finish in a personal best time of 9:41.95, the sixth-best time in the semifinals. Orie finished 10th in the heat and 18th overall in 10:04.28.

Rachel McArthur also ran in the 1,500 today in the second heat that went out much faster. McArthur started in seventh, then with 500 meters remaining she made a move up to fifth. On the backstretch, McArthur was clipped from behind, slowing her down significantly as she fell to the back of the race and finished in 4:21.15, faster than the winners of the first heat. A protest was filed on McArthur's behalf due to the impediment but ultimately was ruled that the contact was not consequential.

The night closed with the quartet of Emma Pollak, Jaida Drame, Grace Jenkins and Glynn in the women's 4x400-meter relay semifinals. Pollak came out of the blocks and handed off to Drame who made the 100-meter break in seventh. Drame dropped a spot on the curve but made it up in the homestretch when she handed off to Jenkins. Jenkins stayed in seventh before handing off to Glynn in eighth, who was able to catch Tennessee at the end to finish seventh in the first heat in 3:40.44. Their time was six seconds off their NCAA Preliminaries mark as Pollak and Drame combined for a 1:50.55 first two legs, averaging 55 seconds, followed by Jenkins at 55.47 and Glynn at 54.43.

Covert's five points pushed the Buffs into a tie for 18th in the team scoring as Arizona State claimed the lead with 18 points followed by a three-way tie for second with Virginia Tech, Nebraska and Florida with 14 points.

Heptathlete Avery McMullen begins the first day of the women's heptathlon tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m. MT with the 100 hurdles. She will compete in the high jump, shot put and 200-meter run as well, as Friday looks to be a rainy day in Eugene. McMullen will close out competition Saturday along with DeGenero, Boreman, Abby Nichols, Covert and Johnson.

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Wetmore

On Emily Covert
"Very satisfying race. I'm not sure where she was on the form chart coming out of the regionals, but we had hoped she could get into the top eight, get on the podium, First Team All-American and she exceeded all of our goals. Excellent, she's just a sophomore and has a big future."

On Micaela And Madie Advancing
"Well, that's what we had hoped for. According to the chart, they would make it to the finals and they did. They ran smart, ran controlled. Nobody ever feels brilliant on these semifinal days. So now they have a day of rest, get some good body work and a long relaxing day tomorrow and then back to work."

On Rachel's Protest
"Rachel was certainly impacted by traffic in the last lap. We filed a protest and the judges felt it was not significant enough to advance her to the final."

On India And Abbey
"Like Emily, India ran smart, patient outran her ranking and moved up throughout the race. We couldn't be more pleased. Another All-American certificate for her, we're very pleased. Same with Abbey. Abbey ran I think her second fastest time ever and struggled with one hurdle, but she's really relatively new to this event. I think she's been doing the 400 hurdles for about a year and two months so she'll continue to get better."

On Gabrielle And The 4x4
"Well, Elle made nice progress this year technically. It's hard to be perfect in the NCAA final when it's going so fast. I think she was out a little too hard for her fitness. When you get extra tired in the steeplechase technical things begin to happen. It wasn't the best technical race of the year but a huge step for her to get to this meet and a year to go, so she's going to be a factor next year. And then the women's 4x4 it wasn't their best race, but they've never seen this. They've never seen this show before and it can be quite intimidating. Everybody here is good. There are no soft teams. There are no soft athletes. Warming up in the paddock and moving into the holding pens and stepping onto the track, it can be they can be innervating so they had a great year. Congratulations on making it. Most of them are back."

On Avery And Saturday
"Well, let's hope Avery has a good opening day tomorrow looks like a little bit of inclement weather which maybe we're better at than some other teams and then the big final day and let's get some points on the board."

...
"

Also, a couple interviews with Buffs I found on Youtube -

It's overall officially the final day for the NCAA D1 men today, and the Buffs don't have any men left competing, but sophomore multi-eventer Avery McMullen is beginning her 2 day heptathlon competition at 2:00 PM MT today. (Note- Start times in Coach Malone's below tweet are Pacific.)

Sounds like, after 2 nice sunny days in Eugene to start things off Wednesday and yesterday, the rain, at least when I listened to last night's telecast, is supposed to be heading in, so could make footing a little less sure in many of the multi events. I'd GUESS (I know NOTHING about the technical aspects of field events or hurdles) this may decrease scoring some.

There are designated streams available for the 1st 6 heptathlon events available on Watch ESPN and the ESPN app (for those who can access ESPN3 content). Then, the final event tomorrow (800M run) will be part of the main ESPN evening telecast that ends the overall and women's Championships.

Hope Avery has a good day today. I've seen all the videos of Avery working with Coach Malone. Hard work pays off.

Micaela DeGenero gets 2nd in the 1500M!

8 points for the Buffs as a team from that performance, moving them up to 13 overall (tied for 7th in the team race with 8 of 21 events completed).

And it's another 5 points (and 1st team All-American status) for the Buffs as Madie Boreman finishes 4th in the 3000M steeeplechase!

In the process, she runs a BIG PR (personal record), I believe over 8 seconds faster than the mark she set in prelims.

With the Buffs only having a few more scoring opportunities, (3 in the 5000M, and a slight chance for Avery McMullen to score a point or two in the heptathlon (although based on her 800M times vs. the other hep athletes, I'd say that's unlikely.)), they won't end up nearly this high, but their 18 total points puts them in a tie for 2nd with 9 of 21 events scored.

Probably a little farther back than she would have liked (or at least was predicted by running websites), but Abby Nichols earns 3 points for the Buffs in the 5000M run with her 6th place, 1st Team All-American finish.

Props also to sophomore Emily Covert, who had to have heavy legs after her 4th place finish in the 10000, but is able to double back to earn 2nd Team All-American honors with her 14th place finish.

India Johnson, also doubling back from the 10000M, finished in 23rd.

With 20 of 21 events completed, the Buff women are tied (with BYU) for 9th overall with their 21 points.

EUGENE – The University of Colorado women's track and field team put up 16 points here Saturday at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing with 21 points and tied for ninth in the team standings.

The team matches the second-best finish by the 2019 team that finished ninth and trail only the 2000 squad that finished tied for eighth with 26 points for the best finish in CU history. The combined 11th-place finish at indoors and ninth-place finish outdoors is the second-best combination in CU history, second only to 2017 when the women were seventh indoors and 12th outdoors.

The Buffs were led by First Team All-American finishes from Micaela DeGenero in the 1,500-meter run, Madie Boreman in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Abby Nichols in the 5,000-meter run.

DeGenero was the top points getter for the Buffaloes, finishing as the NCAA runner-up with a second-place finish at 4:09.62. The NCAA Indoor Mile National Champion duplicated CU alum Sage Hurta's accomplishments from last year, taking the mile title and finishing as the runner-up in the 1,500.

Off the start, DeGenero fell into 11th at the back of the pack. She bounced out to the top four on the homestretch at the first 300-meter mark. She began to drop off in the race as the women came around through 700 meters. With 800 left she was around 10th, then with 650 to go she began to move up again. With 500 remaining, DeGenero sat ninth holding onto the back of the pack when the bell hit at 3:07. DeGenero held to the back of the pack around the curve then moved outside on the backstretch and blasted to the front with 200 meters remaining. Ole Miss's Sintayehu Vissa, the NCAA mile runner-up, kept the lead after the move as DeGenero worked to pass her on the homestretch, but was unable to catch her in the last few meters, giving CU back-to-back runner-up finishes. DeGenero's 4:09.62 was just a few tenths of a second off her personal best set at the NCAA 1,500 semifinals last year.

The next race on the track saw Boreman back in the steeplechase final for the second time in her career. The 2017 NCAA runner-up went straight to the front off the gun, sitting fifth behind BYU's Courtney Wayment. Boreman held the inside position in third, following safely behind Wayment and Auburn's Joyce Kimeli as the race formed up. She fell to sixth with four laps to go as Wayment put on a 20-meter lead. Boreman moved up a spot with three laps remaining, then moved up to fourth as she helped lead the chase pack, then took the lead in the chase pack, running third with 900 meters left. Boreman finished the race fourth overall in 9:33.02, dropping a huge personal best and earning a fourth-place finish. Her mark moves her past NCAA Champ and Olympian Shalaya Kipp to third in CU history.

Following the steeplechase, the Buffs were tied for second in the team standings with 18 points.

Heptathlete Avery McMullen continued her second day of competition in the morning, starting out the day in the long jump, placing fourth on her final jump at 5.98 meters (19-7.5). She followed that up with a 15th place in the javelin at 35.67 meters (117-0). She remained in eighth heading into the final event, the 800-meter run.

In the 800, McMullen started out conservatively in the back, running around 35 seconds in her first 200. She went through the first quarter in 72 seconds before closing in 73 seconds for a 2:26.06 finish, good for 17th and 743 points. She finished the event with 5600 points even, dropping her to 12th for a Second Team All-American finish.

The final race for the Buffs was the women's 5,000 with Nichols along with Emily Covert and India Johnson doubling up from the 10,000-meter run. Off the gun, Nichols, Covert and Johnson all grouped up as NC Stat's Katelyn Tuohy took the lead. Nichols moved up to fifth through the first 800, with Covert around 12th and Johnson at the back of the pack. Nichols quickly got on the 10K champ, Alabama's Mercy Chelangat's shoulder in fourth as the pack formed.

Nichols sat fourth through nine and a half minutes with Covert in 14th in the middle of the pack that broke out following the leaders. A pack of five with all the top contenders including Nichols as Florida's Parker Valby took the lead followed by Tuohy, Nichols, Chelangat and Oklahoma State's Taylor Roe. Nichols was passed by Roe with three laps remaining as Valby began stretching out the race. With 1000 left, Nichols was fifth as Chelangat went by her as she began to get pushed by the leaders and lose contact with the pack. Nichols was about 10 meters back from the top four with 800 meters remaining. Valby and Tuohy broke out from the other two as Tuohy worked to take the lead with 600 left. Nichols hit the bell in fifth with Covert in 12th and Johnson in 23rd. Nichols fell one spot in the finish, placing sixth in 15:33.09. Covert finished 14th in 15:52.99 while Johnson finished 23rd in 16:16.09.

Colorado had the top-10 finish secured before the start of the 4x400-meter relay while NCAA National Champion Florida had the title wrapped up with 74 points. Texas finished as the runner-up with 64 points.

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Wetmore

On The Finish
"We're very pleased with that finish. It's high. It's very high for us. It's in our top two or three ever. A little higher than we were ranked going in. I think we were ranked 11th going in, so excellent runs for the people today. We're happy, tired and happy."

On DeGenero's Finish
"She's done well from the back of the pack in the past, and we have discussed not getting addicted to that particular style. But it worked well today. She made a big move with 300 to go, working probably from 10th or so to all the way up to second. Then the woman held her off a little bit but very good run for her. We're very pleased."

On Boreman Returning To The NCAA Final
"Madie had a great run today. She's worked very hard the last 10 months, the hardest ever. Her time was wonderful today. Big, big personal best in the fastest race you've ever seen at the NCAA. I think last place was 9:41. It was hard the whole way. I could tell with two laps that she was right on the edge but she fought and fought and had a wonderful result at the end."

On Nichols
"Abby had a long hard year. A lot of miles, a lot of races. We felt she was very ready for today. She did look a little tired with about three laps to go, but those are only good runners in front of her."

On McMullen
"Avery had a good weekend. A couple of heptathlon personal bests, just needed an 800 at the end but wasn't there."

On Johnson And Covert Doubling Back
"Anybody who does the 10,000 and 5,000 double at the conference and the regionals and nationals is playing with fire. I think those two are just a bridge too far as they say. One race too many."
