Should RG extend MM now?

Now that we are bowl eligible and in a bye week, the timing is good for Rick George to get this done.

Should he? Or should RG wait until after the season?

Odds are that he gets more expensive as seasom goes on. Do it now

historically, i think CU has jumped the gun a bit....with Hawkins for sure....and i thought the Barnett revamp after 2001 was a little quick at the time....but in retrospect not sure what my issue was at the time. i think if i'm rick george i get MM on-side and figure out how to keep Leavitt....even just one year knowing going in. really set a foundation on that side of the ball.

edit: i am in favor doing whatever it takes to stave off suitors....and would have no real problem getting MM and Chiv et al out on the recruiting trail armed with a fat new deal to sell

Do it now, I wanna see it on cu-video's TheRise. The team will be pumped and feed off it.

what makes everyone think mm will sign an extension now? even if he wants to stay here (and i expect that he really wants to), why wouldn't he wait until his bargaining position is even better? odds are very, very good that the team will do better than 6 wins this year and the upside is high and the downside from here is low for mm.

i'd be really surprised if a deal got done now.

history lesson: the year that barnett got fired, the team started 7-2 or thereabouts and were ranked. barnett was offered an extension, which he declined and said he wanted to wait until the end of the year. the team promptly went into an epic tank, as everyone will remember, and barnett was fired. so, it can cut both ways. but, gb still had a bunch of really tough games ahead of him that year. MM is in a much better position, i think.

as for the assistants, it will shake out however it is going to shake out. pretty much every hire that MM has made after the initial group he brought in when he got here has been a good hire. i hope we can keep JL and DC, but life will go on. we are in better position (winning, recruiting, athletes, momentum, facilities, support) than we have been in for years-- we should be able to continue to hire great assistants. the Original Coach Mac was able to do so.

I'd be cool with now or waiting a bit. The assistants, Idk how they go about that one so, Ill just leave that to someone else. I'd be willing to bet we have some turnover in that area though.

Yeah, do it now before floated offers of a lot of $ start coming in, making negotiating more difficult.

I have confidence in HCMM, I think he does it right and will continue through the season. I just think you keep things just as they are and don't mix contract negotiations with winning the PAC12. How about we just let the season finish then deal with contract issues.

Just keep doing what you're doing and everything in its time.

I think RG should try but HCMM should stall. If he makes the PAC-12 championship he could get a whole lot more and bowl eligibility isn't going away so his floor is set well

We should definitely try. Everyone that ran their mouth, myself included, should be rooting hard for an extension in this thread. He has definitely earned it.

The appropriate time is once the season is over. If that ends up costing us a little more, so be it.

Remember all those folks who said we were overpaying for a MWC coach? Yeah, I remember that, too.

So... Um... Thanks, Bohn?

Too much is going on now to have the HC involved in contract discussions. And don't forget the assistants. There will have to be raises for them and bonuses. This is all budgetary stuff that needs to be balanced with revenue. Let's just focus on winning the Pac and deal with all that stuff later.

Yikes.

I think RG will have to stump for an overall salary increase. I assume that will require administrative and regent support.
I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of how this stuff works, but I suspect he is in charge of his budget.

I think an extension is appropriate but it can wait. No reason to distract coach with this now. I doubt he's going anywhere.

The good thing about our situation is that if MM left(which I don't think he will) we have JMFL in the wings to promote. The danger would be both of them getting offers they love at the same time...which would be possible but lsss likely. Also, not many great jobs out there for program rebuilders (Oregon, Texas??).

I think this buys us a little time to figure out a new compensation package for all, and how we can bring in a top ST coordinator.

I wonder what the revenue benefit has been so far with the increased interest?
