New depth chart released - Crawley to start

Watching last year this team needed a major infusion of athleticism. The freshman being high on the chart just points that out and indicates that we are getting some guys in who are much better athletes.

The inexperience is going to hurt us but I would rather have somebody run by us a few times due to freshman mistakes than run by us every play due to lack of athletic ability.

I also get the impression that this depth chart is as solid as warm jello. Embree won't hesitate to change it based on who is stepping up and who isn't making plays.

Jared Bell to safety must mean that he hasn't gotten his speed back after the injury. Also we had heard a lot about Moten, interesting to see him end up third string with three freshman corners ahead of him.

Orms as the Nickel isn't a surprise, not starting in the base is. Makes sense though, let Terrel take the beating on first down run support and keep Parker healthy for passing situations.

I'm expecting Creer to end up spending more time than Goodsen as he gets healthier but Jones is still going to get the huge majority of the carries if healthy.

Also Wood and Powell as co-starters at FB is likely to be very temporary.

Stuart was always a sleeper as he considered hoops his priority. Never weightlifted until this spring. His bench max was only 220 at LOI day.

I suspect he got transformed since January which could mean he could really progress fast.

I have no real issue with KC returning kicks, but we better have options behind him. Part of the issue the last several years has been it seems about two guys on the entire team can return kicks.

...and one of those could hardly be called a "returner" - more of a "catcher."

If you play this game afraid to get somebody hurt, its probably gonna happen. Hes a football player man, let him spin if hes good at it. Id take another Chris Hudson, Ben Kelley type. Gotta understand we have trouble scoring, flipping the field is pretty big for that. We put our qb back there, then id get concerned.

Uh, yeah, they do. But they also have the depth to withstand some injuries. Count me as one who's concerned that KC might be the starting PR.

I'm not too worried about the depth at CB right now. Like Sacky said, Special Teams is a very crucial part of the game. Successful programs emphasize it greatly. You put game breakers in the return game. Thats just what you do.

Would u rather go 80 or 40 on a drive, hell maybe not even have to use your O if he takes it back.

Speed and talent can make up for a lot of mistakes in football.

Reminds me of something Bill Parcells said about LT his rookie year. He'd thrown him in at OLB and the defensive play called for him to cover someone. LT didn't know what he was supposed to do so he rushed the QB. Got a sack. Later in the game, same call, same thing. Another sack. Parcells decided to just make what LT was doing what that play meant and adjust the coverage behind him.

Interesting depth chart. Looks much better than the spring one, even with so many true freshmen.

The key to this season is staying healthy on the OL because the depth looks pretty brutal there. I like that starting five quite a bit though.

Thx Nik

So we have 2 guys on d, 2 guys on o and 1 special teamer who will be making their first ever collegiate start. that's a lot better than I expected.

I hope our lack of experience, especially with the back-ups doesn't hurt us to badly but at some point it probably will.

On a positive note though having all those young guys on the two-deep means that they are going to get a lot more work and attention in practice as well as a chance for game experience. This should help us a lot in upcoming years.

That lineup really doesn't look that bad to me. Maybe it's this particular flavor of Kool-aid I've been drinking lately, but I see a decent amount of athleticism there. WR is still a big question mark.

Sapphire-flavored?

One thing that's going to help a lot is our schedule - CSU, Sac State, Fresno State and a bye-week vs Hawai'i, Ohio State, CSU, Berkley and NO bye-week.

Totally agree. If we are going to have a young team this is the OOC schedule we want while they cut their teeth.

It will also be interesting to see how much of an impact on the team winning two out of the last three and getting to take an airplane ride home after a win has on this team. A three win season can never be called a success but the if the way the season ended can be translated into some confidence coming into this years OOC it will make a huge difference.

Like the depth chart quite a bit, except the lack of depth behind the LB seniors and WR. Where you at Bobby Kennedy?

Not really sure how you can pin that on BK. He went out and got three WR's in 2011 (one gone) and three in the 2012 class (two grayshirts, nothing he can really do with Williams tearing his ACL and not being ready and JT having some family issues).

What have people been hearing about Spruce? Nice to see him starting... For no real reason that I can explain I've always felt he was going to be a good one.

I wood not have an opinion on spruce, but I hope he's fruitful.

Not the level of athleticism I had hoped for from BK. I'll leave it at that.

I think the BK hate is premature. He couldn't have predicted the JT departure, and we love Moette, and I'm sure the family will take care of biz and get him back here.

So other than McCulloch? GT is very, very athletic and is a home run threat. Between Spruce, Thomas x2, and Williams I believe there's a pretty good amount of athleticism on the outside.
