NEW: Regents Meeting, Benson Decision, Investigation Report -- Monday, 6/12

I guess I'm a 10,000 foot view guy. She called Mac, and he made sure he could never touch her again. An investigation took place and he's in jail and gone from the university. She is safe.
I could get all fired up because I don't like PD, but the end result is exactly what needed to happen.
This thread demonstrates why Boulder is such a tough job. People want a piece of flesh when the outcome is good. There is no systemic weakness in the program. The coaches and administrators strived to do the right thing, and we have fans on message boards wanting people fired. Tough place to run a program.
Well said. If the admin. fouls this up and drops the hammer on RG or MikMac, it could be very bad for CUFB. It would be damn tough to get a decent HC in here for a long time.

With that said, hopefully the due diligence, and Tumpkins scalp, satisfies the PC crowd, and CU can move on to more productive endeavors.

Not exactly. He knew she was safe right then, then alerted her abuser of the allegations.

I really don't know if something really sketchy happened here, but the amount of homerism in this thread is impressive. If that SI article were about another school we'd be all over them. People f*cked up here, again, at CU. Otherwise it wouldn't have made a national headline. Stop blaming the media for unfair treatment, it's like yelling at storm clouds, they're going to be there rooting out stories regardless. CU needs to stop putting itself in these situations, this was easily avoidable.

CU did not follow protocol by choosing to not report this to the OIEC. If they had taken this simple action most of this could have been avoided. The OIEC has a process to manage this and the athletic department would have been able to wash their hands of the deal. Reporting this to the OIEC would have protected DiStephano, George, and MacIntyre. They made an error in judgement on this point and it seems to be biting them in the butt.
Isn't "protocol" a written set of procedures, or instructions, on how an organization is to respond to a given situation? I don't think this particular situation was covered. At least not specifically. This would be akin to a professor abusing his wife at home. Do they have a "protocol" for that?

Regretfully, protocol demands I report your post to the junta. Your overly inquisitive attitude may be indicative of a microaggression, given your professorist comments.

.

The problem is, he didn't do that (the bolded). Instead, it's apparent that her alleged abuser was informed that she told Mac. This could have put her in greater danger if he was in proximity to her. We don't know if she was in Broomfield to get the restraining orders or not. Maybe she spent the time in a safe house someplace. We don't know if he traveled to Michigan, although it appears that he didn't. Regardless, Mac didn't do anything to prevent a future altercation. Fortunately, nothing did occur.

Mac was in a hard place. He needed to inform his employer (RG) and follow protocol. However, if she is unwilling to go to the police (as she told him), there's not much more he can do. He cannot fire / suspend based on her word alone. It's dangerous to her if he broaches the subject with Tumpkin. And, police can't do anything if there is no victim or direct witness willing to testify. He needs to carry on business as usual, except for cutting her off - although that appears to have been at legal counsel to cover his own ass (and the University). He should have recommended to her that she go to the police. Eventually, she did, but until that point there's not much more he can do.

We all have no idea how many allegations any D1 athletic department has to deal with on a daily basis...most of which turn out to be noise. Go out to drinks with your HR person and you'll probably find this is true of any big organization with a very public face.

SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONs like the OIEC have a place and they should be used when their is a clear PROCESS. But you don't want to involve bureaucratic organizations like the OIEC all the time. These SUPPORT ORGANIZATION are narrowly focused on the issue at hand and NEVER see the bigger picture. They are far from perfect, their investigations take away resources and they are not always right. If misused they can cause way more harm than good. The REPORTER is the filter and the PROCESS is the REPORTER's guide. The PROCESS is carefully designed by leadership so that the SUPPORT ORGANIZATION is used effectively.

Any of you in industry who have had your projects shut down repeatedly for mostly nothing know what I am talking about. Investors are screwed, customers are ****ed, your own team becomes despondent over the bureaucracy, your company loses its shirt and the SUPPORT ORGANIZATION (be it the ethics committee, HR, safety, security or the OIEC) dusts off its hands and without a moment of self-reflection says to itself, 'well gals, we did our job real good.'

This isn't your average project or business though, it's a college AD, in an environment that breeds selacious headlines. If nobody in the AD had even a glimmer of an instinct that this might turn out bad for them if they didn't get out in front of it, then they're incompetent.

An AD and a business aren't totally alike, but I think the analogy holds in this case. The AD has a carefully defined PROCESS for when to go to the OIEC. The PROCESS is the filter applied by the REPORTER for when and when not to go to the OIEC so that the OIEC is invoked when it should be and not otherwise. You can misuse the OIEC both by not reporting when you should and by reporting when you should not.

Those of you who think that MM/RG should always error on the safe side and report to the OIEC are just missing this point at a fundamental level.

Man, this horse is good and dead now.

Nobody yet has managed to point out what MM and RG should have done that is dramatically different from what they did. The Tumpkin "promotion" was temporary and MM really had very few other options at the time.

Are we going to beat this horse some more?

its what happens when there is no football to talk about.

I'll say it again I guess, when the victim voicemailed and texted coach Mac and said she was going to the cops on Dec.18, that should've prompted some action or follow-up at the least. And definitely not this "oh sh*t we had no idea" bs they told the BDC when they needed a response on Jan. 5th or so.

This is the whole linchpin in the story and I don't understand how people keep ignoring it. It's probably what the investigation will hinge on as well.

What can Mac do? The only two ways to guarantee a woman's safety is throw the guy in jail or kill him. How many women have been assaulted or worse when they have had a restraining order? Police can't even do what you are asking let alone a football coach and university.

He needed to not tell Tumpkin. That's all I'm saying. Now, if RG or someone notified him and encouraged him to lawyer up, then I'm fine with what Mac did and instead the other person is who may have increased the risk. At the same time, Mac needed to encourage her to go for help from police or a safe house or something.

Many of the posters here don't seem to have a clue about what happens in a domestic abuse relationship. It's not logical and completely emotionally driven. Police have limited options until they are called by the people involved or given other very strong evidence. Relatives or friends have almost no options if the victim doesn't cooperate - which she didn't initially.

You are speculating. We don't know what MM advised her or the content of any meeting he had with JT on the topic. Heck, do we even know that he personally talked to JT about this?

I guess MM should have personally hired round-the-clock private security for Jane and surveillance on JT.

This thread is why CU will continue to step on its dick when confronted with anything remotely sensitive outside the realm of football. Our fanbase has learned no lessons from our own scandal and the numerous other program scandals that go on. Make the right phone call, be proactive, don't let everyone learn about it in SI, again. Sorry, for the soapbox, but this thread is a giant facepalm for me, we should all know better, imo.

I agree 100% that CU is still really bad about PR in general. Especially troubling that they didn't learn how to manage this stuff better in the realm of negative stories after what it went through with the football and Churchill issues. They can't seem to get out of their own way and always make things worse.

Nobody yet has managed to point out what MM and RG should have done that is dramatically different from what they did.

That is right. They didn't have to do anything dramatically different, just the small thing of linking in the OIEC and they were above the fray. Too bad they didn't cover their assess the right way as they are now fighting the public perception that they are just another big time college football program throwing women under the bus. Yes, this is the public perception for non-Buff fans and even a fair number of Buff fans that read the SI piece. Baylor and Penn State were supposed to be the train wrecks that the rest of the country was supposed to use as a model of doing the right thing right away. Maybe what the three amigos did was close enough to the right thing right away but that is not how it looks to the world outside of Buff message boards.

Someone enables this behavior for two years, fools the police & the abuser's employers, and in the end informs the abuser's boss but requests that he do nothing. Mac was put in an impossible position. Rick reacted with anger but was told by his bosses to wait and do nothing. Its all b.s.

Enough!

Wow, you unearthed the biggest conspiracy I have laid witness to! This woman is a ****ing genius. She started dating Tumpkin while he was still coaching at CMU. He never abused her during that time but she KNEW he would get hired by CU and begin to beat her.

She then endured these beatings for nearly two years so she could then tell the head coach of these beatings and realize that the three men involved would NOT report it.

But wait, according to your conspiracy, she actually wasn't abused! She had faked those beatings and deceived police, the district attorney, multiple judges and CU. By your accounts, Joe Tumpkin should still be here because this was all a deception of epic proportions only a manipulative genius could figure out.

I award you no points... and may God have mercy on your soul!

This thread is great. It shows the complete blindness some people have when it comes to something they care about.
- Let's attack anyone that has thoughts this was handled wrong.
-Let's make every spin excuse possible.
-Even though they have admitted not going to the OIEC was in FACT the incorrect step, let's make more reasons why they shouldn't have gone to OIEC.

I've been a Buffs fan for roughly 30 years. I am at a loss. Everything is always Boulder hates CU athletic. CU hates CU athletics. It's everyone else's fault.

DiStefano and Rick George took the blame and said we were wrong. So accept it. CU was wrong. The question is how was it mishandled and were there any cover-ups.

As @BigJim has said, CU could have avoided this issue by contacting OIEC. A gray or grey area is just that, a reason to err on the side of caution instead of potentially looking like you were trying to keep this quiet. For those saying they did everything they could, you are wrong. It's simple. Reporting to OIEC was all they could have done. Listening to legal counsel that was not even CU related was the wrong thing to do.

What else could CU have done? As the victim said to Mac, GET JOE HELP!!! The only thing CU gave Joe was more responsibilities and a lawyer. That isn't help. That's protecting him from whatever could happen legally. The help she alluded to and he needed was some ****ing counseling which, yes, means you let the victim know you are meeting her needs and Joe is getting the help he needs.

Even if Joe denied the ENTIRE thing, which he obviously didn't by giving up his 2nd amendment right to carry a weapon by signing a PPO saying he's a threat to the woman, you say if you don't go to mandatory counseling we will have to place you on admin leave until we know more. CU contacting OIEC allows them to do their ass covering and learn more from victim to determine if it was justifiable to do more than provide counseling.

As I said before, by lawyering up and having that lawyer call, CU triggered the woman to protect herself because she was now CONCERNED for her SAFETY. A victim is most in trouble of her life when others find out about the abuse. That's when things worse than domestic abuse occur, like death!

If this was cut and dry, as we all dream about, there would be no need for spending probably $250k on this. They don't want to repeat this. They want to know everything they can and make the right moves to make it look like the university doesn't care if the athletic department messes up.

Anything posted whether pro-CU did nothing wrong or questioning CUs handling is tired and old. But, it's life and a message board so we keep talking about it. Talking about politics is old, but we have a forum for that sort of stuff on here and on social media. Deal with it. We aren't all going to agree and if you are tired of reading this thread, show some restraint and ignore it. Or add something besides the tired **** that hasn't been said. Of course if you do that, you will likely have to deal with someone that presents alternative scenarios which is in fact what life is about, having different thoughts!!!
