LINCOLN — Three pay-per-view telecasts to start the season gave Nebraska fans a chance to see their football team and the athletic department an opportunity to make some money.
Perhaps close to $1 million.
Based on projections, Executive Associate Athletic Director Marc Boehm said each could net NU between $250,000 and $400,000, depending on individual contracts with Fox Sports Net. In comparison, appearances on network television are worth $275,000 to the Huskers.
Boehm said Nebraska would not know exact financial numbers until December.
Going off cable systems that already have reported, NU and Fox Sports Net are estimating the Western Michigan game on Aug. 30 will be around 50,000 buys. Early indications from Fox Sports Net are that the San Jose State and New Mexico State games each could be at 40,000-plus.
The record for a Husker game was 60,000 buys for the 2006 pay-per-view at Kansas State. Last season's two PPVs, however, totaled only 24,000 and 22,000.
"In checking with our partners at Fox, they have told us Nebraska clearly is tops in the Big 12 — if you look at pay-per-view games — and nationally alongside with Florida," Boehm said. "Which is pretty staggering, really. It's really a tribute to all our fans."
Nebraska is set for a split ABC telecast for the Sept. 27 home game with Virginia Tech, scheduled for 7 p.m. Other television assignments aren't yet known, with the exception of ABC carrying the Nov. 28 home game with Colorado.
Boehm said NU would use its best judgment on potential pay-per-view telecasts through October and November. Fox Sports Net windows only allow for 11:30 a.m. or 6 p.m. kickoffs.
"We want to make sure we're not overdoing it," Boehm said. "We're going to really think about what we do from here on out. It's advantageous for our fans that we don't go to too many night games or too many 11:30 games."
Boehm said revenue from pay-per-view telecasts goes into the athletic department budget and benefits all NU programs.
