Nick Saban is retiring from coaching

Kind of surprised it took this long. I get the impression that Saban is just as disillusioned with the landscape of college football as many of us are. He has nothing to prove. He’s a multi millionaire, and is not willing to play the stupid games that are necessary to win in college football.

This is just another nail in the CFB coffin. Maybe the entire system has to crash and burn before it can be resurrected.
From rumors down in Tuscaloosa his retirement had nothing to do with NIL but do that his wife Mrs. Terry has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s

Sounds like it’s one of Lanning, Sark, Norvell, DeBoer, or Dabo, and apparently Lannings buyout is a lot more than the $20m reported (although Feldman doesn’t say what or why). Couple that with some of the reports that Lanning was not, in fact, in Tscaloosa last night and I don’t think it’s Lanning. I think Sark is the guy that makes the most sense.

Each of those makes me so happy, I find myself wondering if maybe they can't all go to Tuscaloosa.

If they think the buyout for Lanning was steep, I can’t imagine what the buyout for Sark is going to be.

As for his reasons - it’s all pure speculation on our part. I would guess there are several factors that are contributing to the move. He’s 72 years old, which is probably the biggest factor. Who among us is going to want to still be working at 72 years of age? Add to that the changing landscape of college football (not just NIL, but the transfer portal, bowl game opt-outs, lack of a real governing body, conference consolidation, etc.) and the possible health issues with his wife and it all makes a lot more sense.

Sark after 6 months in Tuscaloosa

I think Sark or DeBoer would be best case and alleviate concern on our end. I think the only big program that CP might consider is Oregon due to his relationship with PK and Nike and the fact that he knows getting the elite players would be no issue. Feels like Oregon is kind of a "Colorado on steroids" or "Colorado with big money" type of program that really has no legacy to it. No coach has been able to get Oregon over the top and win a Natty, and maybe CP would view it as a program that HE could be the one to do it.

I don't know, I'd be sweating if Lanning takes Bama. Talk me off the ledge.

This is what's happening, sorry man. It's going to be funny!

I read that Lanning has some contract language that kicked in if he produced a 10 win season (this year) so he was auto extended to 2029 and the guarantee increased and the buyout increased, which was designed to benefit both Lanning and Oregon. Rick George should copy this type of structure imo.

I kind of like it when yak in on the ledge. I hope he stays there for a bit.
Look. I will debate why I don't think CP will coach another program in his career, but obviously any time the carousel starts spinning and you're talking about some of the biggest resource jobs in the country potentially being available, I will be a bit nervous (although I think there's a pretty small list of big programs he'd be a realistic candidate for with mutual interest).

However, I just want to see what he can build and what this team can do in an all-in, high expectation 2024 season. If he leaves after winning 8-10 games, fine, but I don't think I can take another promising coach leaving after a losing season.

I’m not discouraging your neuroses.

Yes, I'm sure that his being 72 had nothing to do with it.
The federal government project manager world was pretty rocked when I retired. But hey! It was time, dammit! Not only was I burned out but I was an old fart!
