BOULDER—Colorado will kick off the 2018 season at the Rumble in the Rockies in Laramie, Wyo., facing Oral Roberts, North Florida and host Wyoming, August 24-25, at UniWyo Sports Complex.

The tournament will start for the Buffs on Friday, August 24 at 10 a.m. against Oral Roberts. CU will be back on the court at 5 p.m. to face North Florida. CU's third and final contest of the weekend will be on Saturday, August 25, at 7 p.m. against the host, Wyoming. Live stats will be provided at GoWyo.com and when available, a live stream will be at the same link.

No. 15 Colorado returns 11 letterwinners, including four starters, from a team that earned a 24-10 record and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Alexa Smith led CU with 3.97 kills per set, while Naghede Abu posted 1.20 blocks per set and hit a team-high .344. Brynna DeLuzio handed out 11.02 assists per set and Gabby Carta-Samuels recorded 3.17 digs per set.

THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES: Oral Roberts was 15-14 last season and earned a second place finish in The Summit League with an 11-3 record. The Golden Eagles return three starters plus their libero. CeCe Madison was second on the team in 2017 with 3.18 kills per set and hit .224. Morgan Blomquist led ORU with 0.71 blocks per set and Bri Greenlee recorded 1.08 kills and 0.46 blocks per set. The libero, Tori Roe, led the team with 3.42 digs per set. As a team, the Golden Eagles averaged 13.5 kills and hit .233 in 2017.

SCOUTING THE OSPREYS: North Florida was 13-19 last season, which included a 5-9 mark in conference play. The Ospreys return their leading attacker, Devyn Wheeler, who averaged 2.65 kills per set and added 1.49 digs and 0.33 blocks per set. Their second leading attacker, Taryn Griffey, recorded 2.46 kills per set and hit .307. Alana Shoff, who averaged 1.11 blocks per set, is also back in the line-up. Last year's UNF team averaged 12.33 kills per set while hitting .186 and posted 2.23 blocks per set.

SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS: Wyoming finished the 2017 season with a 17-14 record and was second in the Mountain West Conference with a 12-6 mark. The Cowgirls return all six starters and their libero. Last season, Tara Traphagan recorded 2.71 kills per set and hit .241, while Emily Lewis averaged 2.86 kills per set. At the net, Reed Copeland posted 1.20 blocks per set and added 1.94 kills per set with a .312 hitting percentage. Marissa Harmon directed the offense to a .230 hitting percentage with 9.57 assists per set and UW's libero, Lily Austin, recorded 3.71 digs per set.

From the Wyoming schedule (https://gowyo.com/schedule.aspx?path=wvball) and preview article (https://gowyo.com/news/2018/8/22/wo...umble-in-the-rockies-to-open-2018-season.aspx), looks like only one of the three Buff matches might be streamed, the one versus the Cowboys.

Links-

Live stats (assume for all matches. Looks like the same software as the Buffs use, so would guess the stats will be accessible through this link only when a match is in process.) - http://www.sidearmstats.com/wyoming/wvball/

Live video - https://gowyo.com/sports/2017/9/1/mountain-west-digital-network.aspx
(Right now, the streaming web page doesn't show a link to the CU vs. Wyoming match, but since their schedule has "Watch" links in it for all 3 Cowboy matches, hopefully a link will be added to their Mountain West streaming page before the start of the match.)

If I remember correctly, CU doesn't stream matches in tournaments when the Buffs are not playing. From the CU article, I "think" only the Wyoming match will be streamed.

On the eve of the season- opening double match day for the Buffs, some nice recognition for Alexa Smith, as she's one of twelve vballers named "players to watch" this season by ESPNW. (Looking at the list, I believe almost everyone on the list was some sort of All-American last season, with many being 1st teamers. As a reminder, Ms. Smith was named to the 2nd team.)

And, assume the Buffs have now bused up to Laramie and are MORE THAN READY to start the season tomorrow morning against Oral Roberts in less than 12 hours.

Match should be starting any minute.

(No Naghede Abu in the opening line-up. Hope all is well with her. Hopefully just spreading the work around in today's matches.)

And, NCAA has the Buffs as "one of the teams to watch for a breakout season".

(Assuming live stats are accurate, setter Jenna Ewert and defensive specialist Taylor Deprosse saw playing time in that set, so no redshirt plans for those two true freshmen.)

Looks like the Buffs are definitely taking this match as a chance to play with line-ups and get different (less experienced) players live match experience; no Alexa Smith in the lineup at the start of game #2.

Buffs down big in set 2 12-18 and take a timeout. (For reference, Alexa Smith came back in at 9-14.)

Smith Guides No. 15 Buffs To Season Opener Against Oral Roberts

https://cubuffs.com/news/2018/8/24/...fs-to-season-opener-against-oral-roberts.aspx

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Senior Alexa Smith recorded 15 kills in the University of Colorado's season opener, helping the No. 15 Buffs get past Oral Roberts 3-1 (25-15, 14-25, 25-19, 25-18) in the first match of the day at the Rumble in the Rockies at the University of Wyoming.

Junior Justine Spann also had a nice season opener with 11 kills in addition to eight digs and four blocks. At the net, junior Lillie Klemmer made her first career start and posted a career-high seven block assists, in addition to four kills and two service aces. Redshirt freshman Danielle Price also had a nice debut with six kills and four blocks (two solo and two assists), while Lauren Dorrell, who was playing on the right side, posted five block assists and added three kills.

"We are happy to get our first match under our belt," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "ORU plays a little different style than we normally see and we could have made some adjustments to it earlier. That being said, I thought our offense in the three sets that we won was run very smoothly by Brynna (DeLuzio) and we saw some nice debuts from four new offensive players in Dani (Price), Lillie (Klemmer), Justine (Spann) and Lauren (Dorrell)."

WHAT HAPPENED: Colorado got out to a strong start in the match with a solid win in the first set, but suffered a set-back in the second set, falling to the Golden Eagles. The Buffs rallied back to take the final two sets to start the season with a win. CU is now 22-11 in season openers all-time.

SET 1: The Buffs dominated in the first set, winning 25-15. CU went up 7-4 and was able to increase its lead to 14-8 midway through the frame. ORU took the following point, but then the Buffs strung together a 5-0 run to go up by 10. The Golden Eagles took a timeout, but the Buffs responded with a block from Klemmer and Dorrell. The Buffs maintained a strong lead and finished the set 25-15.

SET 2: ORU flipped the script, defeating CU 25-14. The Golden Eagles took an early 7-4 lead in the frame, although the Buffs got within one point (7-6) just two points later with a kill from Dorrell and a block from Spann. Unfortunately ORU put together a 7-3 run to bring the score to 14-9 before extending it to 18-12, causing CU to use a timeout. ORU scored the following four points to take a 22-12 advantage and finished the game with three of the next five points.

SET 3: The third set was much more even. It was tied 15-15 when CU scored two straight points to take a lead which the Buffs would never let go. ORU took the next point, but then Spann recorded a kill and teamed up with Klemmer for a block to put CU up 19-16, causing the Golden Eagles to take a timeout. ORU took the next point, but again the Buffs answered, this time recording three straight points for a 22-17 advantage. CU went on to take the set 25-19

SET 4: The fourth game was another close one. It was tied 11-11 when CU strung together three straight points, one kill and two blocks, to take a 14-11 lead. After a quick timeout for ORU, the Golden Eagles tallied a point. The two teams exchanged points until CU was able to record back-to-back points (18-14) for a four point advantage. The Buffs increased their lead to 20-15, forcing ORU to use its final timeout. The break would not slow CU down and the Buffs went on to take the set 25-17.

TEAM STATISTICS: The Buffs out-hit ORU .183-.132, although ORU had one more kill (44-43) than CU. The Buffs posted 12.0 blocks to ORU's 7.0 and served up four aces to ORU's two. The Golden Eagles had the edge in digs, 50-46.

NOTEABLE: CU is now 4-1 against ORU…Taylor deProsse and Jenna Ewert both saw action in their first matches for the Buffs…Other Buffs seeing their first action include: Anyse Smith and Danielle Price…This is the third time CU has started the season August 24…CU is now 2-1 on matches played on August 24.

NEXT UP: The Buffs will be back in action at 5 p.m. Friday, against North Florida.

Just a minute or so until the scheduled start of the match against Northern Florida (who lost convincingly to Wyoming in its 1st match 12-25 12-25 17-25).

Looks like the Buffs are going to get lots of points to practice, but most importantly they do get the 1st set. (Live stats still not working. Edit- now they're up.)

The second set is tight for awhile (14-13 Buffs at one point), but then the Buffs pull away a little bit for a 25-17 win to go up 2 sets to 0.

Edit -

Way to go Buffs, as they complete the sweep- 25-18 in the 3rd set!

(Obviously not a very precise way of looking at things, but based on relative scores against North Florida, looks like Wyoming could present a TOUGH challenge tomorrow night. Hope the Buffs bring a solid effort from point one then!)

Article on this evening's 2nd win of the season-

"
ARAMIE, Wyo. — Behind a great all-around team effort, the No. 15 University of Colorado Buffaloes swept North Florida (25-23, 25-17, 25-18) on Friday night in the third match of the Rumble in the Rockies at the University of Wyoming.

CU improved to 2-0 after defeating Oral Roberts earlier in the day, while UNF is now 0-2 after falling to Wyoming.

WHAT HAPPENED: The Buffs hit an outstanding .326 with Brynna DeLuzio handing out 31 assists. Justine Spann had a career match with 14 kills and hit .481 with just one error on 27 attacks. Alexa Smith was second on the squad with 12 kills, while Danielle Pricehad another solid performance with nine kills and seven blocks, in addition to hitting .500 with two errors on 14 swings.

Four other Buffs recorded kills in the win. Lauren Dorrell tallied five, while DeLuzio and Anyse Smith each had two. Lillie Klemmer added the other kill for CU.

Colorado's passers also had a great night. Spann and Alexa Smith led the team with nine digs, while Rachel Whipple and DeLuzio each had eight.

"We are happy with the win, but still adjusting to having so many new faces on the floor; we are still finding our rhythm with each other," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "Our offense is running smoothly but we've got work to do on the defensive end. Justine and Dani were exceptionally efficient tonight, which was good to see. Wyoming will be a very stiff test tomorrow."

The UNF Ospreys did not have an athlete reach double-digits in kills. Their team leader was Taryn Griffey, who recorded nine kills while hitting .421. Solimar Cestero was second on the team with seven kills. Colorado held UNF to a .155 hitting efficiency.
...

TEAM STATISTICS: The Buffs out-hit their opponent for the second straight match, topping UNF .326-.155. CU had 45 kills, compared to 35 for the Ospreys, and also had the edge in blocks (8.0-6.0) and digs (43-31).

NOTES: This was the first meeting between the two teams…For the second straight season, CU is 2-0 after the first two matches.

ABU: Senior Naghede Abu has missed the first two matches this season due to injury. She is expected back in a few weeks.

NEXT UP: The Buffs face Wyoming at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 25. Links to live stats and a free live stream are available at GoWyo.com.

This evening's - https://cubuffs.com/boxscore.aspx?path=wvball&id=11324

VERY tough start for the Buffs finds them down 6-11 in the 1st so they take a timeout. wyoming with at least 5 points from the block already.

Buffs starting to stabilize things a little bit, so wyoming calls a timeout while still up 15-19.

Buffs play much better late in the set, but can never quite tie it and lose the 1st 23-25.
(Looks like they went to a 6-2 in the 2nd half of the set with Anyse Smith coming in for Brynna Deluzio in her front row rotations, and Jenna Ewart setting when Lauren Dorrell's rotations went to the back row.)

2nd set not looking too good, as Buffs were ahead a point or two most of the 1st half or so, but have now gone down 16-20 and have taken a timeout.

Buffs went up 3 very early in the 3rd, but wyoming's come back, and CU takes an early timeout down 6-9.
