I worked at the old park for three summers in the rides department. 1990-1992. Those were the best summers of my life. It was so much fun! We'd volunteer to work double shifts and then go to parties afterwards several days a week. I made some lifelong friends there. And of course there were girls everywhere you looked!
My third year I was an assistant supervisor/trainer. Before the park opened I'd train people if they were operating a ride for the first time. Then during the day I'd have to relieve a few people while they took their breaks. That only took up half the day. The rest of the day I took care of any problems that would arise and walked around to make sure everyone was doing their jobs properly. (Translation: I mostly just BS'd with my friends and talked to girls.) And we supervisors also went on lots of "safety checks". Any time we wanted to ride we just told the patron we were cutting in front of, "I'm sorry. Your going to have to wait for the next ride. We are required to do safety checks throughout the day." Good times!
I was there when the costliest hailstorm in U.S. history hit. It caused
$625 million dollars worth of damage. Those hailstones were at least the size of baseballs! When it was over there was about 18 inches of ice on the ground. It hit so quickly and unexpectedly that lots of people were stuck on the Skyride. The power cut out before they could get everyone off. They got pretty messed up. I thin a few dozen people were taken to the hospital. It was freaking crazy! People were freaking the f out! There was a tornado warning, too. Luckily for me, I bought my first car a week after that storm hit. The storm busted out the windshields on all of the cars and left the bodies with more craters than the moon.
