Observations so far....

Looks to me like everyone rags on Lindgren about play calling? I do feel he has a knack of designing plays and the ability to get guys open.
The OL not giving time for Montez to truly look around down field, Montez develops happy feet and feels the need to scramble, along with forgetting his outlet pass receiver. With Montez's arm strength and the respect our receivers get at the line, we need to throw some fast outs. This in turn will open the home run down the field throw and the run game.

I don't think Tom Brady is the best in football anymore but that's me. He's on the best run franchise for sure, those guys handle business. Some of these franchises don't have a clue what the **** they are doing. Doesn't hurt he has the best coach in football too.

I think are some significant talent issues on offense.
Tackle spots and Center have been mediocre to real bad, and it hasn't just been talent. Kaiser couldn't move. we can't handle twists and stunts.

RB is Lindsay and ? I had high hopes that #19 would live up to that number this year, but he's looked less than impressive when given the opportunity.

TE - watching bounds out there is scary. Poplawski has a nice frame, but wouldn't be playing at any other P5 school this year.

WR: decent guys, no real elite talent, and struggle with press coverage way too much. Also, too small to be great blockers.

Pretty much name any position. Montez looks okay, but nothing special. I like our receiver group, but I am not sure any of the players are really a top-flight #1 WR. RB is a pretty weak group overall outside of Lindsay. TE is non-existent. OL is really hit or miss.

Not to say the talent is bad by any stretch (we have seen the years when it is really bad), but nobody really stands out either.

I thought you were being deliberately annoying to Clean Undies, and that's close enough. You never annoy me!

Fishhead is never annoying.

Can't disagree with any of this. The WRs as a group are good to very good. Only Bobo will get a serious look by pro scouts. It's very possible Shenault and Winfree are as or more talented. At the end of the day, this offense is meh and it starts up front.

Agree. Like I said, talent is not terrible, but hard to say it is elite either.

I think that's fair, but "significant talent issues" seems to be a bit hyperbolic. They might not be as good of a unit as the offseason hype suggested, but every starting position group, save for TE, is an upper half of the Pac 12 in talent.

It's a little early for me to judge. OL isn't doing its job and Montez isn't standing in the pocket getting through his progressions to his wide open receivers.

This has resulted in very few times I've actually seen a CU player getting the ball on time in space.

Also, the guy at the most important position has performed below expectations and seems to still be learning how to run the offense. He's missing wide open receivers, holding the ball too long, scrambling away from phantom pressure and overthrowing multiple deep balls. The one guy who can make the entire offense look inept is the QB, and Montez has done a great deal of that at times through the first two weeks.

I would group the Pac-12 into tiers. Right now, I think the talent gap between the top tier and the middle tier is pretty significant.

Which means it is entirely possible the OL talent is an issue.

Somebody said, didn't check who, that Lynott finished up at center? If so, does he stay there?
It's a tough call to move an all-conference guard to a new position. But if our "best 5" is Irwin-Kough-Lynott-Kaiser-Haigler this has to be a consideration.

If you want more confirmation of this, the only movement on OL in the Texas State game was:

1) Miller to replace Kaiser after ~ 1 quarter (guess that really was a health issue)
2) Lynott to center, late;
3) Tonz in at RG.

Haigler and Kough played the whole game. Are we trying to RS the true frosh that are on the 2 deep? Or are we getting desperate to try anything to see if something sticks? Or both?

I think we've seen a basic offensive set against two sub par teams.
We'll see more of that on Saturday.

The O line needs to improve a bit, as that would help the running game take hold.
We're not running hte QB like we did last year, but that might change.
Montez has been good, but misses the little things that Sefo did well (leadership and grit), but he should get those.
D line has been bad agaisnt the run. Too many big plays.
D backs look great as always.
Special teams look solid.

A little spooked about the game against Washington and some other P12 teams, but hopefully they'll sharpen up
and show up for those games and make me look like I'm worrying over nothing.

Change your signature line.

If this team can win 7 games I'll be happy. That means N. Colorado, Arizona, Oregon St on the road, Cal and ASU on the road ALL must be wins.
I think that's very doable but no given. I think Washington, USC look to be about 10-15% chance for a win, UCLA about a 25% chance, Wazzu about 40% chance and Utah 50%. One prediction has CU playing SDSU in the Las Vegas Bowl which is not prestigious but I wouldn't complain.

It's likely been pointed out somewhere, but the celebration by Montez after his meh rushing touchdown against TSU tells you everything you need to know.

I want to give the young guys the benefit of the doubt before senior leadership has a real chance to influence them, but SM is a junior and studied under Sefo. Granted it was a different sport, but running D1 track in college was an adjustment, and I managed to get my **** together by the summer between Soph/Jr year and made a huge jump in performance.

Looking for exponential maturity growth from QB 1 these next few weeks. I respect the dedication to fitness he made in the offseason, but being a freak athlete doesn't help you running the show in college football as much as it does for other skill positions. I have a feeling this 'swagger', bordering on arrogance at times, is a big reason for the lack of intensity we're seeing after dudes would bleed for Sefo last year.

Good news is, the potential is there. If this is who SM is, let's just get a little reckless and run some boots.

Don't agree that Oline isn't trying. They are just playing confused and it makes them look unpassionate. QB and Oline are out of sink and OL isn't clear what to play. Lindsay is confused with them. Much better in 2nd half when Lynot went to center. He is the second best player on this team IMHO.

All this fixable with more practice and if Montez can lead and read. Also think that having Irwin back as the second most important player on the field will make a huge difference. He will fill in some of the leadership vacuum.

D is good, but has some exploitable holes which will show in PAC12 play. Surprised by our LB play, but worried how thin we are.

I saw Mulumba take a two yard side hop to assist a tackle that was so fast it looked like he flat out teleported. Some athleticism on the Dline. I am looking forward to watching how much DL play improves as the year goes on.

Agreed. None of our WRs are leaders, our OL and TE captains haven't been out there, and PL has had a little indifference to his play, IMO. @Duff Man said it in the chat during the game; this team is resting on the accomplishments of last year's team and expecting it to come easy against lesser opponents. The entire offense looks like they believed all they had to do was show up.

Montez set expectations filling in for Sefo during the Oregon and Oregon State game last year.

We all know he can have an explosive game. It's really a question of when it all comes together.

Those expectations he set are gigantic - first CU QB ever to throw for over 300 and run for over 100.

Dialing back my fan expectations and being patient with Montez as a week-in, week-out starter is where I'm heading. It took until Sefo's senior campaign to learn how to consistently win. Great warrior Sefo had his fair share of frustrating moments earlier in his college career.

I hate to say it, but maybe we don't see an other Oregon-type game this season. Hope we do. But it's not guaranteed.
