Official 2018 Fall Camp Thread

Listening to this, obviously with the sunshine pumping in mind, Neill mentioned that you can see Steven actually going through his progressions which is very nice to hear. Will have to verify on Saturday but still nice to hear. He also specifically did NOT mention Fontenot getting reps with the ones which is interesting. Just day 1 tho
The progressions are nice, but is he willing to step up into the pocket this year instead of that horrendous, blind roll to the outside?

I thought the following was very interesting as it relates to CU recruiting:

"Length is the thing we look at (when recruiting), not necessarily height," Drake confirmed. "(Johnson has) the right length and he has speed, explosiveness and quickness. ... You can drill a lot of things but speed and athleticism is something you already have to have on your own."

That sounds like a really malleable standard to me.

Depends on how applied. I know that the NBA is big on that stuff. Arm length and hand size being more important than height, so they'll use those things to shade their height requirements down by a couple inches for a position and won't want a guy based on height if he's got short arms & small hands.

I think it is more just giving some cover to questionable OL/DL recruiting.

I am saying both can be true, but this coaching staff seems to think any mention of recruiting misses is going to have the whole program come crashing down.

I keep hearing mentions of Chev wanting the ball out faster and an emphasis with our WRs this year being to get open on slants. Stuff you can do with bigger WRs that last year's group struggled with other than Bobo.
Definitely need to see some of the longer developing routes though, those were pretty deadly last year when Montez had time.

I wonder if the DL could actually end up being an area of strength for this team in 2018? Edwards, Tuiloma, Mulumba, Johnson, Franke, Lang and Antwine. That's seven guys who should all be able to contribute solid minutes this year.

In addition to better depth, I think we'll see a lot of difference with how they play. Drake has been emphasizing hand fighting, agility drills and gap integrity. I'm hoping for a much more active group that also doesn't screw up the flow/responsibilities of the LBs (which was a huge problem in 2017).

Last year's dline essentially consisted of Leo Jackson. There really was absolutely no depth and a bunch of new players trying to figure it out. The main cog of the dline could barely be relied on for a play or two before being exhausted the rest of the game.

If Edwards can be functional with added strength and conditioning, along with the maturation of Mulumba from what we saw at the end of last year, this defense could take a pretty big step forward. The dline was just about as bad as we have seen the last 10 years or so.

I do not expect full public acknowledgement from MM of hardly anything, unless it clearly benefits him.
My point is, you continue to look at most things with a glass half empty view, which is fine as CU hasn't done much for people to feel great about, but I don't understand what this means...

... What would you like this staff to say about recruiting misses? Seriously.

"Last year we did not play well enough on the DL, in part because we had depth issues. We know we cannot let it get to that point again, so we have shifted our DL recruiting strategy and it is a priority going forward."

Typical MM fluff, but acknowledges real issues.

That's fair. I guess I just assume he fully understands the DL talent isn't good enough to consistently hang with USC, UW, etc. but that he isn't the type of coach who is going to throw his players under the bus for not being talented enough.

Said with sarcasm, Or his coaches that recruited the undersized or under strengthen talent.

His tolerance of lackluster line recruiting has been a head scratcher for me since his first recruiting class.

Hmm. So it’s possible for a player to be tall but short? Or, conversely, short but long?

Semi-unrelated but do you have a subscription to 247 and is it worth it? I feel like $120 for the year is a sizable chunk especially when I wouldn’t utilize it as much in basketball season tho I still would.

Is it tolerance or an inability to correct?

I do & there’s a deal right now to try it out for under $10 for 5 months

Just purchase one less 6 pack a month and it evens out.
