Do pigs want Malzahn after last time’s courtship?
That is the question. My guess the answer lies in Arky's ability to fill the job with a candidate better than Malzahn...my guess is they can't, pride will be swallowed and egos massaged.

2d Mid-week, I am bored, just saw a few tidbits Carousel Update:

dwyermj kicks off the spin of the carousel by spotting the first corpse banging against the hull of Rutgers, the first carousel casualty, Chris Ash.

New stuff noted with an UPDATE tag.

Open Jobs:

Rutgers- Chris Ash is out (h/t dwyermj), Nunzio Campanile is interim. No firm news on the new Capo dei capi, or whether Campianile will be consigliere, but rumors abound Greg Schiano left the Pats last March to muscle his way back to New Brunswick (or is it Camden?), honestly, who cares where it is, it is still NJ. Chris Ash reportedly still alive and well. Joe Moorhead, Miss. St. HC getting some mention. Schiano looks to be the man in Piscataway. Rumors a deal is in the works are flying. Multiple sources point to Schiano being announced any day now. UPDATE: Schiano met with the NJ governor, reportedly about the $$$ for facility upgrades when he returns, all but a done deal.

Florida State- Willie Taggert out after less than two years. (h/t vinniew_11). That was a big one. Kirk Herbstreit drops a nuke on FSU, then pees on it to put out the fire. See ahoelsken's post above. So, who's it gonna be? FSU has spent roughly $30M (h/t sinkratz) on coaches over thelast couple of years...that is a lot of oranges to sell. Odell Haggins, longtime FSU AC takes over as interim. Bob Stoops not interested in FSU job. Likes his part-time gig in the Arena league, or whatever it is he is doing now. FSU AD wants to have man in place by season's end. That would limit the pool quite a bit, I would think. Norvell a possibility (h/t Duff), Deion Sanders (h/t Sewall Beach), probably the silliest rumor out there right now. UPDATE: AD hires DHR Intl. for the search, expect to have hire made within a month. Leader in the clubhouse? Mike Norvell. UPDATE OF THE UPDATE: FSU insiders rumoring Bob Stoops has made a deal as of this afternoon (11/14/19) UPDATED UPDATE OF THE UPDATE: Full 180, no Bob Stoops.

Arkansas-
Chad Morris is out. Could not win even one SEC game. (h/t Duff). Eary names: Mike Norvell, Drinkwitz from App. St., Gus M., one column made the case for 59 year old Willie Fritz, not gonna happen IMO. CarolinaBuff says Leach, could happen. UPDATE: Malzahn rumors continue to swirl. UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: Checked a couple of Hog related posters who sometimes seem to be in the know. Arky AD not interested in "retreads", whatever that means in North Arkansas, but Leach is a no go. Sexton has pitched Drinkwitz and Kiffen and Kiffen is getting some traction. Norvell seems to be the the numero uno on the AD's wish list. Some mention of Freeze and Bill Clark. This one will be interesting as Norvell seems to be the #1 target of both FSU and Arky. If Arky craps out on Norvell, it could degenerate pretty quickly. I don't see Freeze or Kiffen there, honestly. The animosity between Malzahn and Arky is probably too high for St. Gus, as they call him, to return to Fayetteville. (h/t hawg1).

Possibles:

Harbaugh- UM is a mess. After tOSU dismantles them, it will likely be curtains for Jimbo. UPDATE Rumors of an exit strategy by Jimbo, then a strongly worded "I am staying" letter from Jimbo to player's parents. Almost as good as an indicator he is going as the dreaded AD vote of confidence. The win over ND is a nice scalp for Jimbo's wall.

Charlie Strong- Severe downward trajectory. Cntinuing a bad start, and the ice gets thinner for an embattled HC.

Derek Mason- below .400 at Vandy in year six. Rumors swirl, the Vandy AD is unhappy, despite a nice upset of Mizzou. 2-7, just pasted by UF, no bowl, I think Mason is a goner. Jeff Fisher, Dave Aranda, Willie Fritz, Ken Numaatoilolonamaalolliteamnaaomommlo, and last but not least, MikMac himself, getting some early mention.

Clay Helton- Sitting at about .640, not a good look for the plastic SoCal fan. UPDATE: Swann out, Mike Bohn in as AD. Bret McMurphy reproting Urban Meyer is target numero uno. Pete Thamel says look at James Franklin, and if not him, then: Bob Stoops, Kyle Whittingham, Matt Rhule, PJ Fleck and a cast of thousands. This one will be big. I wonder how Bohn will screw it up. And of course, Lane Kiffin has expressed interest...in the HC job, not some random coed, although you never know. Some reports Bohn to USC as unwinding. Bohn wants Urban, Pres. Folt does not. Reports that other AD's said no when they were told they could not hire Urban. Pete Thamel reports Bohn will likely come anyway. I agree, he has always been a windsock. He will do as he is told, which is why SC will end up with him. My guess as to the SC hire is not novel, it is Jack Del Rio. Let me be the first, I think, to nickname him, Jack The River. Bohn officially in. Helton continues to dangle.

Matt Luke- Ole Miss always presumes their team should be more than it is, but even by reasonable standards, Luke is underachieving. UPDATE: The University has told the AD buying out Matt Luke, in his 6-16 SEC glory, is too much and that he needs to stay through 2020. Apparently the 6.5MM to buy out Luke and the 6MM more to buyout RichRod and dear old MikMac is more than the Rebels can handle, budget wise.

Mike Bobo- CSU may not be able to afford to let him go yet. When you look at his overall record, it isn't that bad by CSU standards. But the losses to the flagship, AFA, Boise and Wyoming weigh heavily. Wins at UNM, UNLV and Fresno could save Bobo, yet. 4-5.

Mike Gundy- Fans getting picky. A .670 HC not good enough anymore.

UNLV- Hard to see how Sanchez survives. No winning seasons in five.

University of Almost Mexico- Ditto Davie, except he won in his first season..

Will Muschamp- Received the dreaded vote of confidence fro his AD.

Other News:

Show me the Money- Cali leads the way to player pay, starting 2023. Hapless NCAA and Conferences clutch pearls.

Sheriron Jones- The well-traveled QB gets caught in a solo routine. CU dodged a bullet. (h/t sewallbeach)

Arizona- Gets defensive about its DC and fires him, and one defensive AC. (h/t Jens).

Wazzu- Tracy Claeys "resigns". (h/t Tractor)

USC- hires Mike Bohn as AD (h/t ZKobalt), 11 other P12 programs chuckling uncontrollably.

Minnesota- PJ Fleck extended for 7 years, kNU in mourning.

Indiana- Tom Allen negotiating a raise, and presumably, an extension. kNU mourns more.

kNU- Wagons are circling in advance of the yearly, ritual de-pantsing by the Badgers. 8-13 Scottie Frost got a virtual "vote of confidence" from Bill Moos who said Scottie needs "3 or 4 recruiting classes" to turn it around in niblet land. The beginning of the end? When the AD has to defend his HC, it usually is the beginning of the end. Just a little perspective, Scottie makes as much as Gus Malzahn at Auburn and can't beat anybody but directional schools.

I often wonder why Kyle Whittingham name does not come up more in coaching searches. Seems to me he would be a fit at USC -

Likely because it appears he is a Class AA asshole.
He is a massive jack ass, I can verify that. However, a lot of it has to do with his location. He massively benefits from Salt Lakes Polynesian population and he wouldn't be able to duplicate that anywhere. Past that, his recruiting is MM level. He relies heavily on transfers to fill out his team.

Gotta be able to coach the talent he gets up though. Whittingham might be the best in the league at this. BTW-USC gets their fair share of Poly kids. Wasn't the kid who made the play for them to ice the game here one?

He is a hell of a good coach and I would agree he is probably the best coach in the league (him and Petersen are 1a and 1b).

Not sure on the second part

You guys drastically underestimate the pressure cooker aspect of the USC job. It takes a different type of coach to embrace those expectations.
USC job is also a lot like the Texas job in that a much bigger part of the job than at most other places is dealing with the big money donors who fund the program.

These are guys who believe that their checkbook buys them the right to have their opinions heard. When they don't like something that is going on they believe they deserve an explanation, from the coach in person.

All college head coaching jobs involve some of this stuff but the level at a place like USC is different than most other places.

Everybody in the PAC has Poly kids on their roster! Only Whittingham has a "Hometown" advantage" based on local Poly population, plus LDS, of which he is one! (BYU grad). Don't think his schtick travels well outside UTAH at all! Happens with BYU homies: LaVelle Edwards, CIP!

You seem to be unable to understand "hometown advantage" since you just described it.

Nice work. I have zero clue why any school would want Lane Kiffen, though. That is, unless he's made some changes. It's probably more because I don't like him. :D

I think Sonny Dykes could be a good fit at Arkansas. Have to recruit Texas as the head coach of Arkansas, different offensive system in the conference and he has previous head coaching experience.

Arkansas paid SMU $1.5 million for the ability to hire Chad Morris. I have a hard time seeing their boosters sending more cash to SMU for another coach.

Didn't Arizona promote Chuck "Hawaiian Peace Sign" Cecil to be their DC?

If South Carolina gets curbstomped by Clemson, Muschamp might be in real trouble.

Arkansas paid SMU $1.5 million for the ability to hire Chad Morris. I have a hard time seeing their boosters sending more cash to SMU for another coach.
That's possible but that is two completely different situations. Dykes has them playing well and has P5 coaching experience.

Wow. I wonder if the market for buyout, hire, fire, buyout, hire is starting to reach its limit in some quarters. Ole Miss, Vandy and CSU seem to balk at dropping coaches for what appear to be largely financial issues.

Wow. I wonder if the market for buyout, hire, fire, buyout, hire is starting to reach its limit in some quarters. Ole Miss, Vandy and CSU seem to balk at dropping coaches for what appear to be largely financial issues.

Ole Miss doesn't fit with those two-I know I'm going to sound like a Fusker fan here, but I watched them Saturday night. They're pretty good, but they're just young. They've got a decent defense, and Rich Rod has himself a QB in that Plumlee kid. If I'm their AD, I'm keeping things as is for another year.

Then Muschamp is in real trouble.

Buyout is huge at $19 million, but the President and AD at South Carolina are currently running a masterclass on ineptitude in regards to public statements.

Also saw today Dantonio says he will be back next season. Yikes, he is taking a flamethrower to his legacy there.
