***OFFICIAL 2019 CU FOOTBALL FALL CAMP THREAD***

I expect that the defense will get better and better as the year progresses. They are learning a new scheme, while simultaneously plugging in a ton of new pieces that have little to no experience. A defense is good only when they can just go play and not think. They're not there yet, which is no surprise.

The good thing is, a lot of this can be covered up with great effort, and that is something that seems like it will be demanded by the entire defensive staff.

I expect a lot of inconsistency throughout the season on defense. A team with our depth concerns does not really get stronger as the season progresses.

I tend to think the experience the guys get this year will show up in 2020 more so than the last part of 2019.

The defense usually does well early in camp but we are two weeks in. The offense is just loaded with weapons including one of the best playmakers in the country and a 5th year QB and some serious experience up front with Lynott, Hambright, Sherman and Pursell. They should be winning a majority of the time. I just hope it isn't like 2017 where we thought the defensive line was better than it really was so we thought the offensive line was better than it really way and that all went to **** pretty early in the season. We need a good offense and a mediocre defense in order to go bowling.

Regarding the O-line - I was encouraged to hear that they have gotten bigger with guys being around 300 rather than 270, and I assume that they are still in shape with the conditioning program they had in the summer. I hope any way - i love how people look at 300 pounds as if that's an accurate metric rather than attaching body fat % on to it. I'd rather have a guy that's 270 and 10% body fat than a 300 pound guy with 35% body fat.

Kind of depends on how talented the newcomers are. We need to see a number of guys improve over the course of the season like Wells did last year if the defense is going to be where it needs to be for that final half of the season. I don't feel confident predicting that either way. My hope, obviously, is that there's enough leadership and talent from our top guys to get us through, we avoid key injuries, and then players come on where things are currently looking light. It's a lot to hope for. Odds are that we're a bottom third of the Pac-12 defense, but I see a path to being a lot better than that.

Totally agree about 2020. I could really see it go either way, but I hope I'm right :). My opinion is based on that I think you're going to see a lot of guys play on Defense this year, and the coaches will coach them hard all year long....so I do expect to see them improve throughout the season. Caveat being that we avoid a bunch of injuries in the secondary.

Best practice for being physical while staying off the ground. Team may be starting to get the Mel Tucker way.

You haven't watched the buffs the last 6 years? If your talking sprinters yes I want the guy at 10 percent or less body fat. Olinemen at least 20% it's a marathon and you need reserves. Looking at the Buffs Oline it doesn't appear anyone is around 35% and seem to be in good shape. Me I will take a bama or clemson Oline all day long over small lean lineman, those big boys plow the road pretty well for those teams.

anyone who hoped that the team as completely on board with the new head coach's standard was living in the clouds. I know I was. But MM recruited 95% of these guys and it hasn't been long. Not that they won't, but barnett saying this team looked tough is a great sign that the process is well underway.

There are reasons for pessimism the year after a coaching change, no doubt. New offenses and defenses have to be installed. Players have to respond to a different coaching staff, etc.

Still, I think Barney had it tough, following Ellen at CU, and that experience makes him more leery than may be warranted. Ellen had been relatively successful and recruited at a higher level than CU has in a long time--those players weren't going to just turn on a dime and accept Barney calling them soft. A team that's lost 7 straight and had their last coach fired will be much more accepting of a new regime.

Hagan always goes way over the top with his praise for his RB's

I'd take it with a grain of salt

Fair. I buy that he is really high on Mangham though.

I do not buy there will be a true four RB rotation at all. Someone will get left out.

Agreed. It's even hard to get to 3 if the top 2 are getting the job done.

The defense is going to struggle in spots this season. The path to a bowl game is to win a random shootout or two and play solid special teams to minimize the defense being put in bad spots.
Special teams could be the difference in 2-3 games this year. I like our specialists. I think we should be pretty strong there. It’s been a while since the days of the Riddler and his clinics.

Can somebody explain what he means about “staying off the ground”. I’ve never heard that before and I don’t know what he means by that.
MT's been preaching that, like in the NFL, practices need to be violent and physical when they are in shells. There's been a learning curve on doing things that way where you tackle through a thud bringing it 100% but without risking injuries by taking guys to the ground, diving at legs, etc.

Agree, most likely a 3 man rotation with Smith and Mangham getting most of the reps. Fontenot comes in for breathers and...

I could see Broussard shifting to a slot role and Joe Davis redshirting this year.

The last time CU had a four man RB rotation, the RBs were Cortlen Johnson, Bobby Purify, Chris Brown and Marcus Houston... in that order. (Yes, Chris Brown was the third RB on November 23, 2001).

It helps to have a pretty awesome OL, too.

Hagan very rarely has a committee approach. Some of that has probably had to do with his limited personnel, but I don't think he likes doing that.

I think we might see four backs at the beginning of the year but I am guessing he finds his two guys and rolls with them early to mid season time. Could actually see Broussard becoming the third down back.

I liked Gary's last assessment, should make those who say 6 or more wins feel good. As many have said, I like that coach GB gives no bs responses. He can tell it like it is without ripping a person in negative way.

Going to be tough to really judge what we have on defense until August 30th unfortunately. Our offense SHOULD be way way way better than the defense given the pieces we have. Really hoping the iron sharpens iron cliche is what is happening here...

more like sept 7 on defense. We keep the nubs from scoring and I will start to feel ok about D. I refuse to consider CSU a yardstick for anything other than basic competency. See: last year.

Other than penalties and how the offensive and defensive schemes look, I don't think we will get a whole lot of anything out of that game.

Special teams like most of the game come down to blocking and tackling. Agree with you on the specialist but a bigger difference could be that we have gradually been getting better athletically. Hopefully that translates into better coverage and return teams.

PRACTICE REPORT: The Buffs were in shells Wednesday in what Tucker described as a good "back and forth" day, with both sides of the ball coming up with some big plays … The battle at running back continues to be a good one. Jarek Broussard broke a nice long run Wednesday, Deion Smith made a great grab on a long pass and Alex Fontenotcontinues to be maybe the most consistent of the bunch in terms of ball security, pass blocking and running … Aaron Maddox and Mikial Onu lined up at safety with the No. 1 defense in several team drills …

We're going to have to score at least as much as we did last year to beat the Nubs again. Hard to not respect the hell out of in particular Martinez after the way he played against us last year. A couple other thoughts-I think AFA (simply because of how different what they do is) will be a good test for the defense and team in general-we'll find out a lot about how much the kids have bought into CMT and staff against an opponent like them. How will the fundamentals against their option be? Can we push them around up front like we should be able to keep their O off the field?

One other thought on the RBs-we can talk all we want about how they're going to be rotated or whos where on the depth chart, but everybody is going to get carries back there.......even if a kid like Davis gets redshirted. You need 3-4 kids at that spot to get through a season IMO.
