Official 2022 Bowl Games Thread

Wasn't there huge outcry a few years ago that NYE was a horrible day to have the playoff games?

It's perfectly fine to have issues with Dabo, but you aren't seriously calling one of two coaches to have beaten Saban in a playoff championship game a fraud, are you?
He did that with one of the best young QBs in the sport in Lawrence.

He's a guy who got lucky to get a once in a lifetime QB. He's also a guy who is lucky he plays in the awful ACC.

Luck that he's in the ACC?

He interviewed for an assistant coach position at an ACC school, spent five years working his way up the ladder at that school and then accepted an interim HC position where he performed well.

this career trajectory seems very intentional and i don't see that luck is a factor.

Dabo is not a fraud. The run for Clemson has hardly been all luck and hardly all due to Lawrence either. He has long been a great recruiter.

The problem for Dabo is his inability to adapt to the changes in college football (transfer portal/NIL), as well as not making outside hires when his coordinators have been hired away. He had a chance for a hard reset last offseason after both his coordinators were hired away, but instead chose to promote from within.

Yeah, he’s dug his heels in on the transfer portal/NIL. Super weird, but he will adapt.

Dabo is a great head coach and any program would take him. He has also benefited from two generational QB’s.

The ability to change and evolve with the game is rare, especially when you're talking about elite coaches.

Saban has evolved, but slowly. Probably a little too slowly to maximize his performance.

Back in the day, our own coach Mac probably evolved to too quickly to maximize his performance.

But, by far, the thing that most limits a lot of coaches (not just elite, but coaches at all ability levels) is an inability or unwillingness to evolve their approach - and that includes on field strategy, practice strategy, recruiting, staffing, etc, etc.

Deshaun Watson be like: "Am I nothing to you?"

I forgot he even played there. Point still kind of stands though. He's not getting the studs at that spot he got a couple years ago-DJ wasn't that. We'll see what Klubnik looks like.

And not getting future NFL Pro Bowl QBs makes him a fraud?

People tend to forget Dabo won 11 games (twice) with Tahj Boyd and 12 games with Kelly Bryant.
For the most part, that program was built on defense and the QB play came later. When I knew they were on the cusp was after watching them play and seeing the talent & depth Dabo had stocked, particularly on the DL which is the hardest position to be dominant.

There's something toxic about the UT culture

The other two events are terrible by comparison to what Sark did. I can only imagine what the average member of Allbuffs would do if they were at a long retail line on a busy shopping day, waiting for a cashier to open, and some Target employee put there hands on them. Probably, a quarter would deck the employee, a quarter would scream in the same manner as Sark, and half would say, “Thanks for the free nipple rub”.
