In the past HCMM teams come out flat after a bye week, but the JL part of the team wont come out flat. UCLA will play like this game is for their whole season. 21-17 Buffs
Can we take this game as another bye-week data point. You could pretty much see it coming. Hopefully next year we can change our approach to the week off.

one is an anecdote, two is a story, three is a trend...Well Mac has been here for 4 years and this is only his 2nd bye week so...

...but you can see it with your eyeballs. Sloppy play, loss of concentration...
We've had three bye weeks since HCMM to my reckoning. OSU in 2013 and USC in 2014 and last night. In each of them we have come out rusty and less disciplined than normal. If you look at the USC game in '14 we completely blew the first quarter. If you take away the first quarter of that game we would have gone into OT with them.So the only other data point is from week 4 of the 2013 season. Our bye week was week 3 and we went on the road to OSU that was 3-1 at the time we played. I get that it is something that needs to be examined, however I don't buy the narrative yet that Mac can't coach through a bye week.

point was we came out of the bye very rusty that year and it took us a quarter to get our edge back. It wasn't like Under Stanford Control starting subbing. Not how it works. Come on.

I guess you can accept or not accept the thesis of a bye causing poor performances in the past. Regardless, do you think that we looked a little rusty and undisciplined coming out of the bye last night? Was it just happenstance this stuff occurred after our bye?I got your point, you just are not articulating it well. Bringing up 2013 is essentially worthless and not sure a road game at USC in 2014 is very useful either.

Still the 10pt loss represents their largest margin of defeat on the season. The game wouldn't have been close if it wasn't for all the damn penalties.

Is this your longest post to date?I think the bye week definitely had an effect on the team. But again, it may just be a one-time thing or it may be something to watch, especially considering we will be playing in a bowl game after a long layoff.
Your examples from 2013 and 2014 just do not take into account any context surrounding those performances. Oregon State in 2013 was an exceptional circumstance where the team did not play for three weeks due to the Fresno game being cancelled due to the flood. Considering MM had coached a total of two games at CU prior to that game, is that really a reliable data point to use? As far as the USC game in 2014, that was not the only game we started slowly in during that season. There were three other conference games where we were both down double digits and held scoreless in the first quarter. So it seems like that is the trend to look at from that season, not necessarily that the USC performance came after a bye week.
