Official game thread - CU at USC

Kicking was the right call

The Pac-12 Net announcers were discussing if it was 4-down territory, and one of them said yes, because there might not be enough time on the clock to get the ball back. But that was before the 3rd down played resulted in a sack for a loss. Once that happened, kicking was the right call. If they had gotten it to maybe 4th and 3 or better, the risk to go for it might have been worth it. But not 4th and 10 or whatever it was.

I take solace in the fact they blew ASU's doors off 41-20 last week. We've got the offense to hang with ASU. We've also got the defense to stop them far more than they can stop us. I think, like always this season, ASU's best hope is to make this a crazy shootout and have CU get caught in a quagmire of turnovers.
And they could have done it to us today, if it wasn't for turnovers (which I recognize are part of the game, and a strength of our defense). It will be good to be back in Folsom.

Even in hindsight it was the right call. You put it on your defense to get you the ball back in that situation. If there was two minutes left, then yes, go for it. With over four minutes, put yourself in a position to win the game after your defense gets you the ball back.

After the sack there was no other choice. If we'd gone for it and not made it, there would also be a lot of second guessing. The odds were against going for it.

The most important component to settling for the FG there was the sack, which was probably an unnecessary sack to take. Montez might not have had a play there, but he panicked a little on that play and ended up taking the loss that sealed the decision to kick the field goal.

I can't disagree, I would still be tempted to kick even if there were short yardage to gain on 4th down. The defense was playing very well all 2nf half and I think the gamble on the defense getting a 3 and out was a fair call.

You could see our offense doing better everywhere as the game wore on (and we started throwing some deep balls). And we got a couple of key stops on defense, besides the turnovers. I thought the FG was the right call, we've got to be able depend on our defense. I thought the problem was the tight play calling through 3 quarters.

Kicking there is the more aggressive move, playing to win. Says we'll score here, D will stop them, then score again. Kick means we'll take a longshot to tie here, hope the D drags it out, and maybe we find a way to win in OT.

Both defensible, but the FG there is actually playing to win.

worst experience at game. Stranger in SC jersey sees I'm wearing CU shirt and walks out of his way to confront me and my 8 year old son. He said he hates CU and is very happy we lost. He is close enough to my face that I can feel the flecks of spit shooting from his mouth. He tells me he is a Nebraska fan living in LA and bought the jersey to come to this game.

Anyone else experience this douche.

I didn't mind the fg really, we gotta learn some things and hope we did today. All good, they'll be fine. Trenches, we need some recruits there, both sides. I'm not talking about down the road either, be ready when they get here.

No. The vast majority of SC fans in my section barely noticed there was a game going on. Either on their phone or taking pictures. I wouldn't even call them fans. More like people with nothing better to do. Few stayed for the 4th quarter.

Game turned on the Witherspoon pick that wasn't. Not a knock on Witherspoon, who was in great position. Just an incredible play by the SC receiver. Lucky we got out of the first half without being down 21 or worse. Wish we brought our second half play the whole game. I guess we can sit Sefo if he isn't 100% and still probably win next week at home, but after that we need to roll with him.

Specifically what would distinguish him from any other Nebraska-douche fan at the game?

Nebraska's full of Trump supporters. Osborne is hiding his tax returns in his safe.

With a few exceptions SC fans supprisingly nice. One really bad example was apparently fusker posing as sc fan to 'root' against Cu

Sorry if someone mentioned this already in thread, but to me at game it was obvious refs were doing everything they could to keep us from running tempo. What the ****...

No doubt. At least three times, we had them caught with too many men on the field, and a ref ran in to keep us from snapping the ball.

Not to mention, we had two timeouts. Basically we had to hold them to only two first downs to get the ball back with time left to score. Not a tall task. We didn't get it done, that's pretty much all there is to it.

Anybody see a post game presser anywhere? Saw the YouTube buffs TV with KO and Gillam, they were in a damn popup tent in the parking lot. You can't hear an thing because there are car horns honking the whole time. It would be nice to hear MacIntyre's reaction to this loss. I do not anticipate anything but a series of vanilla coach speak, just this was unique loss. The Buffs were expected to go on the road and play a very competitive game and unfortunately came up just short. I am just curious what his post game emphasis was.

I caught MacIntyre's post game interview on the KOA radio show. The near-pick by Witherspoon and the inability for the CU D to stop USC after the FG were mentioned as pivotal moments that dictated the outcome of the game. He admitted to coming out flat in the first half. Have to watch some film, learn from this, and keep getting better. This is the main message.

Lindsey and Montez interviews were both about the offense taking responsibility for not doing their job. Lindsey's voice was rough and he came off as being understandably pissed. Montez recognized that USC and college ball is faster and bigger than anything he faced in high school. He pledged to learn from this and not to try and be a hero that attempts to win the game by himself and make bad choices.

Not the best sound.

Good tone from MacIntyre. I was scared it would be like an "ahh shucks...almost had them" and smiles presser. Its a small thing but to me it shows the magnitude both the players, coaches and program as a whole has elevated expectations.

0 points off turnovers is what did us in. Boys better be ready for ASU.
Actually, I thought the turnovers saved our bacon. That game would have been ugly without those turnovers. USC's domination of our offensive line and ability to neutralize the defensive line was the difference in the game. First time all year where CU didn't have the 'dudes' up front to hang with someone. USC has the best lines CU has faced all year(Which surprised me). If USC didn't have this propensity to shoot themselves in the foot they would be a very good team. Glad CU hung in and kept fighting when they were physically out matched. Kids showed a lot of heart. That doesn't make this a moral victory, but instead just a true reflection of where the team is right now. A good team, with kids that will fight until the end, but not one with quite the talent it needs yet.....but its coming!
