Olympic Sports- Transfers (incoming and outgoing) and other roster news

Looks like the women's cross country/ track and field teams have lost top frosh distance runner Karrie Baloga, who per the below is transferring to Northern Arizona (who already figured to be the favorite to win next year's cross country championships).

Best wishes to her in Flagstaff.

Per a couple tweets in her account, looks like frosh soccer player (midfielder) Grace Thao has transferred from CU, but the Buffs may still see her a time or two, since she's moving to future conference-mate UCF (Central Florida).

Best wishes to her in Orlando.

(Also a general soccer transfer note- in a post-season interview from month or so ago I saw with Coach Sanchez, he mentioned that he already knew of 2 incoming soccer Buffs, but I haven't seen either announced as of now.)

Looks like tennis has picked up a new grad transfer for the upcoming (main) spring season. She is Muscovite Alexandra Abyasova, who after her JC years was an Illinois State Redbird.

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to her!

Buffs Add Graduate Transfer Alexandra Abyasova To Tennis Roster

December 15, 2023 | Tennis
:
By: Aiden Tank, Athletic Communications Associate

BOULDER - Alexandra Abyasova, a graduate transfer from Illinois State, has signed her financial aid agreement to play tennis and finish out her college career at the University of Colorado starting in January, head coach Anthony Pham announced Monday.

Abyasova, from Moscow, Russia, is coming off a season where she took home All-Missouri Valley Conference honors at No. 2 singles spot for the Redbirds with a 24-7 overall record and perfect 8-0 mark in MVC regular season play. During the season she ripped off a streak of 11 straight wins and was 17-1 during the spring season at the No. 2 singles spot. In doubles action she had a 21-13 overall doubles record, including a 20-12 mark with partner Silvia Pomarolli at the No. 2 spot for ISU. The duo was 6-2 during MVC play playing at No. 2 doubles to help lead the Redbirds to a MVC regular-season championship.

"We're excited about Alex (Abyasova) joining us in January," Pham commented on Abyasova's commitment. "She's a high achiever in the classroom and on the tennis court. She possesses a very strong work ethic. Alex brings great experience and a team first attitude that will fit in seamlessly with our current squad."

Her first season at the D1 level in 2021-22, Abyasova was named a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention team selection. On the court partnered with Laura Fitzgerald to earn Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week honors on March 15 following a pair of wins over Grand Canyon and UC Irvine. That duo went a combined 22-3 on the season with a perfect 8-0 tournament record and was capped off going 9-1 in their last 10 matches, culminated by defeating No. 10 Ohio State's No. 3 team of Kathleen Jones and Luna Dormet by a score of 6-2 at the NCAA Regional. Overall, Abyasova went 26-6 in doubles play, mostly at the No. 3 spot and went 21-16 in singles action, with a 3-2 mark in MVC play playing mostly at the No. 2 spot.

Before her time at Illinois State Abyasova competed at Barton College and achieved a NJCAA national ranking of No. 6 in singles and No. 14 in doubles in her final season. Her play helped Barton finish seventh at the NJCAA Division I Championship and aided the program in a No. 4 ranking in the final regular season poll.

As I noted in the (frosh) Olympic recruiting thread earlier today, based on the 1st post below, it looked like volleyball had received a commitment for next (2024) season. And, after a little hunting, it is a transfer, namely 5'8" libero/ defensive specialist Sarah Morton. It looks like she'll be a junior next season after spending her 1st 2 seasons as the starting libero with the Auburn Tigers. (From the Auburn roster page linked to below, she is originally from Munster, Indiana, where she attended the HS of the same name.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

As I mentioned back in post #242, Coach Sanchez in a post-season interview that he knew of 2 incoming soccer transfer Buffs for next (204) season. Don't know if she is 1 of the 2, but per the team including her post (See below) in its Instagram story, looks like CU has picked up a grad transfer in 5'6" midfielder Laura Gouvin. She has spent her undergrad years at Boston College. (Per her roster page linked to below, she also hails from (Monson) Massachusetts.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

Sarah Morton Transfers To The Buffs

The libero spent two seasons at Auburn before joining the Buffs.

By: Courtney Huck, Assistant Director

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's volleyball team added their newest member to the herd this week as libero Sarah Morton announced that she'll be transferring to CU.

"We are very excited to welcome Sarah to Boulder," commented head coach Jesse Mahoney. "With her experience as a two-year starter for a top program and the energy she brings to the libero position, she will impact our program immediately. We are lucky to have her join us in January, giving her the opportunity to get a head start in our systems and our team culture."

Morton comes to Colorado after playing for two seasons at Auburn University, where she majored in marketing. During her time as a Tiger, Morton recorded 750 digs and averaged 3.69 digs a set. In the 2022 season, Morton earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors after a series sweep at Alabama. She earned 39 digs across the two matches and helped her team hold the Crimson Tide's hitting percentage under .200 in each match.

With a 20-10 record this season, Auburn earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where the Tigers fell to Western Michigan in three sets in the first round of the tournament. Morton posted 13 digs in the match.

Morton said that she knew CU was the right place for her almost immediately.

"After visiting Colorado, I fell in love with the coaches, the team, and the school," Morton said. "The resources provided to the student-athletes at CU are unmatched, and once I stepped foot on campus, I knew I found my new home."

Morton will join the Buffs in January to begin training with the team.

"This team has such an amazing culture, and I am so excited to grow together with girls and get to work in the spring!" Morton concluded.
"

Also on the volleyball side, per the below RS- junior Alexia Kuehl, who was included in this season's Buff senior day celebration, has chosen to go back to her home state, and will be joining one of CU's future conference-mates - UCF, next season.

Best wishes to her in Orlando.

I don't know how to imbed from instagram but Maya Tabron is grad transferring to SMU

Here you go.

Best wishes to her!

(At least on my Windows laptop, all I do to embed an Instagram post is go to it in my browser, hit the "..." on the upper right side, and choose the "Copy link" option. Then, I just go back to Allbuffs and paste the link.)

After I believe 4-1/2 years as a Buff (so I assume a grad transfer), cross country and track distance runner Emily Covert is, per the below, trasnferring to Knoxville to be a Tennessee Volunteer.

Best wishes to her!

Men's track and field has announced a new transfer for next season. He is sprinter Cade VanHout, who I assume will be a grad transfer (???) after spending his undergrad years at Wisconsin - Platteville.
(Looking quickly at his times vs. the CU Top 10 list, his 100M time would already place him on the list if he can duplicate (or I'm sure he and the coaches hope improve) it when he arrives in Boulder.)

Women's track and field looks to have picked up a transfer for this coming season(s) in hurdler/ multi-event student- athlete Aubrey Leneweaver, who is heading to Boulder after spending her frosh year at Pitt. (She hails from Havertown, PA.)

congrats to Aubrey. Since she is a multi-event athlete, I wonder if this is a sign the Malones are being retained.

congrats to Aubrey. Since she is a multi-event athlete, I wonder if this is a sign the Malones are being retained.

With maybe her best results in college so far being in the 400M hurdles, it could be that sprint Coach Bockman maybe recruited her, or recruited her in conjunction with Coach L. Malone.

As I recently posted in the (frosh) recruiting thread, the lacrosse team announced its incoming class, and along with 8 frosh Buffs, there is one incoming grad student*** who looks to be a potential NICE contributor for the Buffs. She is attacker Kendall Havill, who is coming to Boulder after spending her undergrad years at Colorado College (CC), where she s a 2-time ILWCA All-American (3rd team after the 2023 season and 2nd team after this past season).
(*** Although a grad student, I'd think that, if it works with her (and the coaches') overall life plans, she could have at least 2 seasons of eligibility remaining, as it looks like she has only played 2 seasons, with one season lost to the Covid-19 pandemic and another to injury (per a CC article linked to below).

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to her!

... Colorado will also welcome graduate student attacker Kendall Havill (Bainbridge, Wash./Bainbridge HS) from Colorado College.
..

Two-time IWLCA All-American Kendall Havill comes to CU after playing her undergraduate career at Colorado College. The transfer attacker led her team in goals in both her junior and senior seasons with 59 and 93 goals respectively. As a senior, Havill was named WIAC Offensive Player of the Year and was a four-time WIAC Offensive Player of the Week (Mar. 26, April 2, April 23, April 30). On top of her 93 goals in the 2024 season, Havill totaled 115 points, 22 assists, 39 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers.

With the coaching change, assume this thread may be dominated by cross country / track and field news the next few weeks. To start with, it looks like Coach Carlson has started building his roster with a local product. Per the below Instagram post, CU's men's team has received a commitment from distance runner Simon Kelati, who before spending his 1st 5 collegiate years at D2 Western Colorado attended Greeley Central HS.

Welcome and congrats to him!

looks like a nice pick up.

Looks like news of a 2nd known incoming men's track and field / cross country student - athlete transferring in - this time younger (sophomore) distance runner Dean Casey, who is following Coach Carlson from the University of Tennessee. Mr. Casey hails from Ennis, Ireland per the Tennessee roster page below, so I believe will become the 1st fully international student-athlete on a CU track team in a LONG time***.

Welcome and congrats to him!

(***For those not aware, I believe former Coach Wetmore said in interviews, and it was confirmed with his rosters, that he only wanted U.S. athletes on his teams.)

Of course nowadays it's accepted there's going to be significant portal losses in almost every sport (can only hope there's more postive vs. negative news overall) - 1st Olympic sport transfer news I've seen for the academic year is negative for the soccer team -

(After a GREAT 3 years as a Buff, wish Ms. Hayward only the best whether she ends up transferring or not.)

Big Ouch. This really hurts the team.

Per the below tweet, and then corroborated by her Instagram post from late last month, looks like we may have our 1st known (to me at least) incoming 2025 season transfer. It is for soccer, and is midfielder Lexi Meyer, who spent her frosh season this semester at Alabama.

As Coach Sanchez and staff have been very good at, she is yet another Coloradoan*** who will be transferring home to compete her last 3 seasons as a Buff. Looks like she had a solid frosh season, averaging almost 30 minutes per match off the bench in the 20 (out of 21 possible) matches she played in while tallying 4 assists with the Crimson Tide. Also, per the Alabama roster page for her, she was the #37 ranked recruit of her high school class per topdrawersoccer.com.
(***Per the Alabama roster page linked to below, she attended Highlands Ranch HS and hails from Lone Tree.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

have to give Sanchez and the program credit they do a dang good job getting bounce backs.

With the volleyball transfer portal now open (Per the below tweets, the transfer periods for vball are 12/8/24-1/6/25 and 5/1-5/15, with a few exceptions), a 2025 version of a spreadsheet which is often my main initial source for volleyball transfers, has now started. (I always find it through a link in the volleytalk.proboards.com forum. This year's version is at
. I go to the "By School" tab.)

From that, looks like one past season Buff is already in the portal, true frosh middle blocker Tatum Johnson. She doesn't appear in the season stats at all, so assume she still has 4 years of eligibility remaining.

Whether she ends up staying in Boulder or moving on, wish her nothing but the best going forward.

Did want to mention that, per the tweet I included in my post #266 above, looks like Ms. Hayward has committed to Georgia. (I forgot to look when I originally posted the tweet.)

Again, wish her nothing but the best in Athens.

From the updated list in the below tweet, looks like the soccer team has picked up a 2nd incoming transfer, and once again it's a Colorado student-athlete coming back to her home state.

This time it's tall (5'11") defender Jordan Whiteaker, who's from Littleton and spent her prep years at Dakota Ridge HS, where she was named the United Soccer Coaches 4A state player of the year after her senior (2023) season one which saw Dakota Ridge win the state championship. She also played club ball with Colorado Rush.
(Unlike the prior soccer transfer, Ms. Meyer (see post #266), I can't find a social media post confirming Ms. Whiteaker becoming a Buff. However, her Instagram profile does reference @cubuffssoccer, and already references #5, which I assume will be her CU #.)

She should be a sophomore for the Buffs next season after spending her true frosh year with regular season Big 12 champion TCU, where she logged 1 assist while playing an average of 28 minutes over 18 matches with the Horned Frogs.

Welcome and congrats to her!
