OOC Evaulation

I'm just not a believer in Cal this year - their offense has been terrible and eeked out a win over a garbage UNC team. If there's such a thing as a bad win, that was it. Upsets happen every year and BYU caught Wisconsin this week - I'm not buying that Cal>BYU>Wisconsin.

I’m not a huge believer in them either, but just like Utah they have some studs on the defensive line that could be a rough matchup for us.

Arizona looks like hot garbage this year. UA was leading 24-17 at the half against Southern Utah. BYU beat them in Tucson and the same for Wisconsin in Madison yet Cal beat BYU in Provo. I think you need to give Cal some credit.

Cal blows but give credit where it is due.

Cal's defense seems to be legit this year. They look a lot like the 2016 CU defense. Problem is, I think their offense is pretty average to bad.

Right. They can play defense and are content to win games 20-17. Can the Buffs win that type of game?
Cal's a lot like BYU this year. Solid football team that doesn't have a lot of guys who can make explosive plays but can grind out a lot of first downs while playing good fundamentals and making you earn it when they're on defense. Really good teams should beat them, but you better play without making many mistakes and be able to overwhelm them with explosive plays.

We have a pretty tough team that comes together a lot better in rough situations but those games always end up being toss ups so who knows.

So far CU looks like a team that can beat Cal. Buffs aren't shooting themselves in the foot and can make some explosive plays. Still a long season and it's the last game of the season so who knows?

We'll both likely be pretty bruised up when we play. Last game of the year, with us playing Utah the week before and Cal having Stanford.

This part of your post is a head scratcher.

Credit for beating the teams on their schedule I suppose, but they were less impressive against UNC than a terrible East Carolina team. They're a good defensive team, but that's as far as I'll go. They look like a team that's somewhere around 40th best in the country IMO.

The Nebraska game had a whole lot to do with us not having any true film on them, and them coming out in their first game with all the adrenaline in the world. Once we had halftime to look at the film and make adjustments on scheme and personnel, we were making significant improvements, and those showed up in the NH game, where protections were more solid. I also believe that Montez taking sacks is a hell of a lot better than him throwing INT's or running backwards and taking deep sacks or intentional grounding. In my opinion, a sack is nothing compared to a turnover!!! Nebraska was bragging about leading the country with 7 sacks, yet they are 0-2!!! Take the sack instead of throwing the INT. If the personnel and players continue to improve, then I feel pretty good about 7-8 wins minimum. The only thing I have a concern is that Chev has not kept the simple creativity of his play calling intact, and was calling slow developing plays against a weaker opponent. I would like to see him stay quick and simple and creative, and not put Montez in a position to fail. I would also say that Roper could be working on back shoulder throws with Montez, because some of these fades and over the shoulder throws are covered, and our stud receivers could make adjustments to intentionally underthrown back shoulder stuff.

A sack is better than a turnover, but that is about the only positive to be had. It seems a bit myopic to ignore a clear weakness.

Why aren’t we asking whether Cal can win a 38-35 type of game, instead of whether CU can win a low scoring game? Cal’s defense is solid but far from a dominating unit. CUs offense, OTOH, is the 3rd highest scoring in the Pac and 25th highest scoring in the country. In fact, CU’s scoring defense is even a full point better than Cal’s.

I think both Utah and Cal are going to be low-scoring games, hence why I mentioned the scenario.

Duff, I agree it is a weakness that must improve, but Montez over the last 4 years has gone from a kid that tries to out-athlete people in a wide open gun slinger fashion, to a kid that escapes out the back and gives up bad sacks, to a kid that tried to throw the ball across his body, to finally a mature and smarter QB with incredibly good accuracy and a very high completion percentages. He has also improved his long ball and made his shorter passes more catchable. My hope is that he is taking sacks right now because he knows the receivers are covered, and his O-Line is a little weak and not jelled together, but could be fixed with more coaching and adjustments and film work. This bye week could really help get Moretti and Sherman integrated on protection, then things will continue to get better.
