Back to the past. Does anyone believe that SMU has completely shed their SWC roots and isn’t cheating? If they are it is working for them because they are now the undefeated favorite for the G5 spot in the New Year’s bowls.
This week starts with (16) SMU going to a talented but dysfunctional Houston (3-4) on Thursday. Friday is only CU/USC with no other games to distract the viewers.
Saturday could be a great day to sit back and watch games. The early games are highlighted by (13) Wisconsin at (3) Ohio State. Prior to their slip-up last week many saw Wisconsin as the Buckeye’s toughest challenge. Can they follow an upset lost with a giant win against a team some think is the best in the nation.
When that game finishes we can switch to (9) Auburn at (2) LSU in another game with playoff implications. Hard to beat the Tigers down there but Auburn has a lot of talent and is used to big games.
Following up we have (8) Notre Dame visiting (19) Michigan. This would be a chance for Michigan to prove to their fans that they actually can win a game against a highly ranked opponent. After last week loss at Pedo State and having already lost to Wisconsin more of the fans are getting restless.
Speaking of Pedo State is it possible for two schools to be declared morally deficient and both declared losers. (6) Penn State travels to Michigan State (4-3) in the Deny and Ignore bowl.
Good thing the headline games look good because not a lot of high interest games beyond the top three.
For the past few weeks the PAC has given us a high interest contest. This week not as much. Most interesting game might be seeing if Washington State (4-3) has gotten back on track enough to go into (11) Oregon and pull the upset against the Ducks who barely survived last week against the Huskies.
Seems like (12) Utah always has an ugly loss each season. Cal (4-3) was ranked part of the season and would love to be this year’s winner.
Indiana is a surprising 5-2 this year but haven’t beaten anyone good. They still won’t have to beat anyone good to add to the win total as they play at Nebraska (4-3.) This should count as a foreign studies trip as the Hoosiers will get to see Soviet era architecture filled with red masses trained to worship their appointed leader (Frost) and designated heroes (the players who still haven’t transferred or gone to jail) without question by the state controlled media.
Sticking in the B1G how truly stinking and decomposed is Rutgers? Their last six games, all loses have a combined score of 237 - 30 (what most good teams score a week.) This week in an out of conference game they play Liberty who not too long ago was an FCS school, Liberty is favored by a TD. Ouch.
Closer to home in what should be a very good game Air Force (5-2) host a solid Utah State (4-2) team in the springs.
Wyoming (5-2) welcomes Nevada (4-3) to Laramie. Hawaii gets the closest thing to a road bye playing at New Mexico (2-5.)
At least CSU (2-5) won’t be embarrassed in front of the fans they have still showing up for games. This week they get to take their beating in Fresno (3-3.)
Northern Colorado has a bye week.
As the season heads closer to ending the local small college standings remain the same. Mines is undefeated followed by Pueblo and Dixie with one loss each.
This week Pueblo host Adams State while Mines goes out of conference to play traditional small school power Azuza Pacific in a game that could be important when playoff seeding is announced.
