Week 6 of the college season

Not quite an other games since the Buffs don’t play but for those of you who don’t take the weekend away from watching football we have games and some opportunities for teams to rise or fall in the polls and standings.

Thursday night is one only for the most die hard or desperate fans. Texas State (2-2) is barely a BCS level program at Troy (1-4) who is just bad. This one deserves its spot on ESPNU (U for Unwatched,) or maybe on one of the home improvement cable channels on a program dealing with toilet plunging.

Sam Houston State (4-1) is at UTEP (0-4.) Sam Houston has four wins against lousy teams, UTEP just loses to everyone.

Friday nights have been good so far this year. This one isn’t great but does include a couple of ranked teams. Syracuse (3-1) hasn’t played a tough schedule goes to (25)UNLV (4-0) who also has faced weak competition but is trying to stay in the rankings.

Michigan State (3-2) hasn’t been in the headlines recently for various types of abuse related to their athletic program but they also haven’t been in the headlines for being any good. Fortunately for them their game at (6) Oregon (4-0) is late enough that most of the country will be asleep for the final score.

Saturday doesn’t have any huge top ten matches like in recent weeks. In fact for one of the rare times there are no games involving two highly ranked teams. There are however a lot of games that could move teams in and out of the top 25.

Early games have Pittsburgh (4-0) and just outside the top 25 at North Carolina (3-2) who was in the rankings earlier in the year.

Boston College (4-1) and also receiving votes is at Virginia (3-1.)

The best early game looks to be (9) Missouri (4-0) at Texas A&M (4-1) who fell out of the rankings despite winning their last four games in a row.

Some midday games that may be more competitive than they look at first glance.

(4) Tennessee (4-0) needs to avoid the road upset at Arkansas (3-2.) Also looking to avoid an upset is (3) Ohio State (4-0) hosting Iowa (3-1.) As usual Iowa has a defense tough enough to give anyone problems but their offense has little chance of scoring much against the Buckeyes.

This may be the wrong week for Auburn (2-3) to be visiting (5) Georgia who was #1 just a few weeks ago. Oddsmakers have Georgia favored by 23.5, this could be a week they cover and don’t stop scoring.
Rutgers (4-0) is at Nebraska (4-1) with both teams included in the others receiving votes. Good chance the winner of this one is ranked after this one. Nebraskans are proud of their football team, of course when the other things you are known for are mobile homes, meth, and manure you latch onto what you can find.

Early evening lacks the significant games we have had the past few weeks. Best of the bunch is probably (10) Michigan (4-1) at Washington (3-2.) Still hard to think of this as a B1G game. Washington hasn’t been impressive, Michigan has mostly barely slipped by the last couple weeks and is in trouble if they have to pass the ball.

Central Florida (3-1) coming off a loss to CU is at Florida (2-2). A win here would be huge for UCF in the state, a loss for the Gators would only make Billy Napiers eventual firing more obvious. They won’t fire him now but it would take a lot for him to survive until next year.

Billy Napier isn’t the only coach in Florida waiting to be fired. Florida State (1-4) is hosting (15) Clemson (3-1) in what was expected to be a battle of top 25 and maybe top 10 teams. Clemson after getting blasted by Georgia has been winning big. Florida State has just been a big embarrassment and you can be sure that some alums are trying to figure out how to fund Mike Norvell's massive buyout of about $63 million at the end of this season.

Late game has (8)Miami (5-0) at Cal (3-1) in an ACC game on the PC (Pacific Coast.) Last week Miami didn’t look as good as their ranking but it won’t matter because Cal isn’t as good as their record.

For the insomniacs the late (very late) game is a B12 battle with Texas Tech (4-1) at Arizona (3-1.)

Slow week otherwise in the Big 12.

The garbage game of the week has Hawaii (2-2) at San Diego State (1-3) They say somebody has to win but do either of these deserve to?

Blowout of the week has UCLA (University of California Lost Again) (1-3) at (7) Pedo State (4-0 if you don’t count court cases.) PSU seeing the other ranked teams getting attention and wants in on it as well.

Locally if you are into pageantry, fly overs, and a game that means much more than a win this would be a great weekend to be in Falcon Stadium. Just don’t expect a good game.

Navy (4-0) is off to one of their best starts in years, Air Force (1-3) isn’t. Navy is putting up lots of points which is a problem because the Air Force isn’t. Falcons have scored 29 total points against 3 BCS teams total this year. Navy has scored at least 38 in each of their wins.

Colorado State (2-2) is at Oregon State (3-1) in what will in the future be a conference game in the new PAC12.

Wyoming who got their first win last week against Air Force, gets this week off to celebrate.

If you have a sensitive stomach you might want to turn your eyes. Northern Colorado (0-5) who may not win a game in a D2 conference is at (3)Montana State (5-0.) The Bears would have trouble beating the Bobcats scout team.

Small schools settling into the conference race.

Colorado School of Mines finally had a dominant win last week. This week (4)Mines (4-0,2-0) is at Mesa (2-2,1-1) who are probably a better team than their record.

(18)CSU Pueblo (4-1,3-0) hosts New Mexico Highlands (0-4,0-2) in what could get very ugly. Highlands was blown out last week 53-12 while Pueblo won 66-10.

(13)Western Colorado (4-0,2-0) gets a break this week with Fort Lewis (1-3,0-2) coming in. Fort Lewis looks to be improved leaving Adams State to take over the basement but they still aren’t ready to take on a nationally ranked team like the Mountaineers.

Air Force is really young. They had something like 40 seniors last year.....and service academies can't use the portal.

Going to be a down year down there.

What? Don't tell me Freeze ran his mouth at UGA or Kirby ahead of the game? Even he's not that stupid.

Seriously, someone get hurt or suspended?
This is a week the Bulldogs don't need the opponent to say something to fire them up.

Feeling disrespected by the polls to start with then get beat on prime time national TV. Good chance Georgia is highly focused for this one.

Huge rivalry game.

The schedule is so weak that Game Day is going to Berkley for the Cal v Miami game just to try and check off any remaining places they have not been to.

Miami, a championship contender with a Heisman candidate QB traveling to play at Cal (who just lost to a winless opponent) after dark in front of dozens of fans??

Miami will die in the dark to a questionable penalty/no call in the deafening silence of an empty stadium.

They will finally understand
