Game on Wednesday so post up on Tuesday.

Wow, typical of college football. Last weekend looked like a bit of a sleeper. Instead we saw a bunch of huge upsets, some of which knocked teams right out of the rankings. Texas went from #9 to out of the rankings. Not to be outdone Pedo State fell from #7 to out of the rankings losing to of all teams, UCLA. Those two alone made for a surprising weekend though they weren’t the only upsets.

Now on to Week 7 of the schedule and what surprises await this week. More upsets, coaches fired, Gus Johnson having a heart attack over a 4 yard gain, we shall see.

Back to mid-week games.

Wednesday night has a pair of important games, important if you pay attention to C-USA which almost nobody does anymore since they were raided for teams by other conferences. The combined records of the four teams is 5-15.

Fans of bad football will “enjoy” Liberty (1-4) at UTEP (1-4.) Contender for Garbage Game of the Week but they can’t even win that honor.

Thursday night has the C-USA teams that actually win some games.

Louisiana Tech (4-1) at Kennesaw State (3-2) and from the AAC Conference we have East Carolina (3-2) at Tulane (4-1)

Friday gets much more interesting.

(24)South Florida (4-1) is at North Texas (5-0.) The Mean Green score in bunches and the Bulls started the season beating two teams that were ranked at the time. Their only loss was to current #2 Miami.

The Friday night spotlight game is Rutgers (3-2) at Washington (4-1.) Now that they are playing real teams Rutgers has lost two in a row. Washington’s only loss was to #1 Ohio State but their wins include nobody of any note. Since joining the B1G they have quickly learned the art of record padding scheduling.

Saturday don’t sleep in. The two biggest games happen early, and we aren’t talking about Houston (4-1) taking their turn beating up Oklahoma State (1-4.)

(1)Ohio State (5-0) is at (17)Illinois (5-1.) If they can somehow win this the Illini have maybe the weakest remaining schedule in the B1G. Oddsmakers don’t give them much of a chance though.

Same time slot we find out if Missouri is for real. (8)Alabama (4-1) faces (14)Missouri (5-0) in Columbia. Mizzou has dominated against a tissue paper schedule. Meanwhile Bama after losing their opener has won four in a row including the last two against ranked teams.

The battles of ranked teams continues into mid-afternoon with (7)Indiana (5-0) at (3) Oregon (5-0.) Hoosiers had dominated including a blowout win over ranked Illinois before struggling to a tight win two weeks ago over Iowa. Oregon’s last game was a huge win at then #3 Penn State. Both teams had byes this week to prepare.

Always worth paying attention to is the Red River Shootout (now made kinder and gentler by calling it the Red River Rivalry) played in an evenly divided Cotton Bowl. (6)Oklahoma (5-0) and Texas (3-2) face off for the 121st time. Rankings and records haven’t meant a lot in this one as this game is the most important of the year for both teams and their fans. Still to be determined if John Mateer plays at QB for the Dirt Burglars. He was considered a Heisman candidate at the start of the season but has didn’t play last week with a broken bone in his throwing hand. Meanwhile some longhorn fans are wondering if they want their highly publicized quarterback to play. His jersey says Manning but his play is often Maddening.

Possibly the two worst 4-1 power conference teams in the nation get together in the middle of the cornfields to determine which is 1 game from bowl eligibility. Maryland (4-1) goes to Nebraska (4-1.) Both have feasted on creampuff opponents. Many fusker fans are hoping that the team gets more wins this year than their wives/sisters have remaining teeth, others have already passed that number.

Not as many big name games in the early evening than in recent weeks but still some attractive battles.

Florida (2-3) is at (5)Texas A&M (5-0.) Aggies are big favorites but Florida has underperformed their talent this year. A&M always seems to find a way to stub their toe while Florida upset then #9 Texas last week.

(15)Michigan (4-1) goes west to the Rose Bowl to take on USC (4-1.) Wolverines aren’t the team they were last year while the Condoms are coming off a loss last week at #17 Illinois.

(10)Georgia is at Auburn (3-2) who is coming off two straight losses to ranked teams.

For late night viewers the best two games are Big 12 matches.

(18)BYU (5-0) is at Arizona (4-1.) Trying to keep pace in the conference (21)Arizona State (4-1) is at Utah (4-1.)

Making yet another appearance in the Garbage Game of the Week we have the Golden Flushes of Kent State. UMass, more accurately UMess, (0-5) travel to wonderful Kent Ohio for an epic battle of the bad with Kent State (1-4.) The Minutemen (named because most of their games are lost within a minute of the opening kickoff) have scored a whopping 16 points in their last three games, combined, while giving up 110 and prior to that lost to an FCS team that is currently 2-4. Kent, not to be outdone, has lost their last four by a combined 203-42.

Since those two frequent big losers are currently occupied with each other the blowout of the week goes to the Northwestern (3-2) at Penn State (3-2) game. Northwestern is a bad team that has had an easy schedule. Penn State lost a close one to Oregon then last week took a shocking loss to UCLA. Josh Franklin is feeling the heat from angry fans as are the players. Northwestern is the perfect opponent to get well against.

Local teams start out on Friday night with CSU (1-4) hosting Fresno State (4-1) at Lady Gaga Stadium. Thousands of Rams fans disguised as empty seats will watch to see if their team can take some of the pressure off Coach Jay Norvell who like almost every other coach in their history failed to produce a winner.

Air Force (1-4) is hoping a win is finally in the cards at UNLV (5-0.) Falcons haven’t been coming out on top but appear to have found their quarterback as they have been putting up points and almost beat a good Navy team last week. Rebels somehow have managed to be unimpressive in winning all their games so far.

San Jose State (2-3) is at Wyoming (2-3.) Neither team has beaten anyone good because neither team is very good this year. Spartans though get to leave after the game is over, Cowboys have to stay. Is there ever a weather report for Laramie that doesn’t include a word like windy, gusty, breezy, high winds, etc. or coming soon, blizzard.

New Mexico (3-2) gets a tough one going to Boise (3-2) who got blown out by Notre Dame last week.

Northern Colorado (2-3) is at Idaho (2-3.) The Bears are better this year than in recent years but this one could be tough. Idaho has lost their last two but two of their losses were to BCS level teams and the other last week to FCS #4 Montana.

Northern Colorado got robbed of a win earlier in the season against BCS level CSU in Fort Collins. With that they might have trouble beating Division 2 CSU Pueblo or RMAC conference mate Western Colorado.

Rising in the rankings (5)Western Colorado (5-0,3-0) hosts Black Hills State (1-5,1-3.)

Fort Lewis (1-4,0-3) is at (11)CSU Pueblo (5-1,4-0.) Fort Lewis lost last week by 39, Pueblo won by 46, implied point differential? Pueblo walk-ons are going to see a lot of action.

Colorado Mines (3-2,1-2) will try to get back on track at South Dakota Mines (2-4,2-2) after losing a close one to Mesa.

Colorado Mesa (2-3,1-2) should have no trouble pulling to .500 against hapless Adams State (0-5,0-3) who have been outscored in conference competition 145-15.

Washington State accepted only $400K to travel to Oxford to play Ole Miss for a 1 off, after Wake Forest backed out. The Rebels will make money on the game, as WF agreed to pay $750K to cancel.

Didn't list it but that game is a contender for the blowout of the week.

Washington State and Oregon State are in big trouble. They were expecting to be getting their $30 million per year from the PAC12. All the sudden they became the PAC2 and that money went away. The new PAC is going to be mostly a reconstituted MWC which currently pays members $3-4 million per year. Don't see that number going up substantially.

They are going to have to do a bunch of these revenue games. A lot of the schools like Ole Miss are going to sell out as easily with a Washington State as they will with a Wake Forest and make more money with a lot less risk of taking a loss.

Sam Houston State actually almost won a game tonight. Jacksonville State hit a FG with 2 seconds left to pull it out.

Tulane with a TD with 41 seconds left to win and go to 5-1.

Hopefully this is an indication that this is going to be another good weekend in college football
