Heart of the season, and time to find out which teams have the heart to make a good season great and which ones will start looking forward to next year.

We get our first Wednesday night game and it should be a good one with Appalachian State (4-1) playing at Louisiana (4-0.) Just in time for our first spell of bad weather we get a dull Thursday night with two (3-2) teams who are just hoping to get lucky enough to get to a bowl. Neither Syracuse or North Carolina State inspire much interest.

Friday night finishes with the Buffs game but if you need something to keep you busy leading up you can watch surprising (20) Virginia at underperforming Miami (2-3.) The other option is to watch what could be one of the worst games this year. How bad is New Mexico? They are giving 4 points to visiting and pathetic CSU (1-5.) The over under is 66.5, is that points or paying fans?

This Saturday could be one of the best of the year. The Red River Shootout is almost always a great game. This year it is even bigger with (5) Oklahoma and (11) Texas both looking for the conference championship and even playoff position.

In other games matching top 25 teams (10) Pedo State goes to (17) Iowa who is hoping to find the offense they lost prior to losing to (16) Michigan. Another game that could have playoff implications gives us (7) Florida at (5) LSU with one team falling from the ranks of the unbeaten.

We also get (1) Alabama going to Texas A&M who somehow are still ranked (24) despite being only 3-2. Must be that SEC magic.

No betting on UNLV, not because they are from Vegas but because they truly stink. How bad do you have to be to get more than two TDs to a (1-4) Vanderbilt who plays like Gloria is their coach.

For Nebraska fans covering the spread means putting another slice of white bread over the mayonnaise slopped on top of the baloney in their sandwiches. In this case you are what you eat. Expect the fuskers to lose by a solid margin as Minnesota should enjoy going to 6-0 against the visiting corn.

From the PAC 12 we can hope that the good USC (3-2) shows up in South Bend against (9) Notre Dame. Most important game could be Washington (4-2) at Arizona (4-1) with both teams in the race for division championships and a shot at the title. Interesting to watch could be to see how once ranked and gaining national attention Washington State ( 3-2) responds to their bye week after losing two in a row. They won’t have it easy against the fighting Herm’s and (18) Arizona State.

Locally we have already mentioned the lambs. If they lose all seven remaining fans might call for the FBI to investigate Bobo for stealing his salary.

Locally Air Force (3-2) tries to bounce back from a loss to rival Navy at home against Fresno (2-2.) Wyoming goes to sunny San Diego for a huge game matching 4-1 teams. Win and Wyoming is solidly on track to go bowling this year.

Northern Colorado (1-5) returned to their losing ways last week. This week they have a chance to pick up a second win at Eastern Washington (2-3,) not a good chance but a chance.

The local small colleges are keeping it interesting. Mines (5-0) knocked Mesa off the pace last week and stays on top and undefeated. This week they host Western State (3-1) while Pueblo (3-1) travels to winless New Mexico Highlands (0-4.)

Thx Mtn for including the small schools. We have had some pretty good small college teams over the last several years.
For those who haven't been to a small college game it is worth going for the experience. You are correct that we have had some quality programs in the area. The level of play is much higher than most people think.

Pueblo has one national championship and another championship game appearance in recent years, they also have more active players in the NFL that a few P5 teams do. Mines has one of the most explosive offenses in the nation, a number of bigger schools have visited their fall camp to observe and borrow concepts.

Both of those schools have fairly new stadiums with excited fan bases. It isn't the same as a game in Folsom (nothing is) but they can be a lot of fun.

On the small schools I keep waiting for another school to be competitive with mines and Pueblo but no one can quite turn the corner. I thought Mesa would do it after a really good season 3 years ago but they’ve dropped a bit. Can’t blame ft Hays and Kearney leaving for a better geographic fits but they would have made life harder for the top of the rmac.

It's hard because Mines and Pueblo have been so dominant that they have a big recruiting advantage. Also tough because the mountain schools are struggling with maintaining enrollment numbers so the budgets are under pressure.

That’s why I keep thinking Mesa will pop. It’s enrollment is around 10,000.
They should be able to build a solid program. School is growing. Also that area has a solid population base and is producing enough good players to recruit the core of a decent team from. The Grand Junction MSA is now well over 150,000 people and the surrounding areas are growing fast as well. It is also big enough that recruiting kids from the Denver area or out of state shouldn't be the problem it can be for some of the schools in smaller isolated areas.

It hasn't been that long since Mesa was the big program in the league and a national contender.

Syracuse is not a good football team. NC State defense is killing them with aggressiveness, Had Syracuse in a 3rd and 37 by attacking every time they try to pass.

Rammie leads 7-0 in front of a stadium at UNM that is probably 90% empty. This is going to be a hell of a pillow fight.

Yea the crowd in ABQ looks pretty pathetic. Any talk of UNM as a viable candidate for Pac12 expansion is laughable. None of the MWC schools draw very well and on top of that they have small stadiums. Boise is typically close to capacity but their stadium only seats around 36K.

Sad thing is that I think UNM could be a much more successful program than they are both on the field and in the stands.

ABQ is a city that is growing substantially with a metro population over 900,000, add in Santa Fe and it goes over 1.1 million. This in an area where there is no competition for the sports dollar.

The problem is that they have been so bad for so long that nobody cares. Every time they actually start to show some progress they cut the funding or otherwise set them back.

It may be that the school administration will never figure it out.

I'm not getting the CSU game, watching the UVA-Miami game instead. Clemson is really good but the rest of the ACC looks like garbage. Both these teams would have trouble winning a lot of games in the PAC.

You not being able to get the Rammie game won't matter in 31 minutes. This is filler until we start.

Am I the only one that thinks it's weird that OU is cool playing Texas every year at the Texas State Fair?

Sheep get their second win of the season tonight, and maybe their last.

MWC is bad.
